  • We got a wild idea to build Estes Pro Series 2.5" rocket kits and put a 54mm K motor in them. After a little analysis and some sims it seemed possible enough. This is the result of that experiment.
This is a somewhat unique launch as this club only operates on a frozen Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. Big thanks to that club for hosting, it's a lot of work!

Everything about this video is awesome! Also, the ice launching tips is very cool (not pun intended 😉). Thanks for sharing!

Damn! Windy day to fly that high! Hope to make it up there next go-around!

That's sick! I did build a minimum diameter 75mm rocket and flew it on an L800, but it had carbon fins and the walls were like 3/16" thick. I knew cardboard was strong, but Estes tubes are more akin to paper. Well done!

Nice! I am planning a proper 75mm minimum diameter build for Airfest this year. Hoping for around 30k. How thick were your fins? Or did you mean fins were 3/16 thick? I gotta order some plate for those soon.

@@pathtouch1 actually the fins were 3d printed plastic! I gave them three layers of tip to tip carbon fiber layup, but after the flight I noticed that the carbon had delaminated in the hot sun. They were about 4mm thick, and the cardboard tube itself was 3/16" (it was a McMaster Carr shipping tube)

YOU JUST DID WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT DOING A COUPLE YEARS BACK! i want to see the estes go again, but with a long burning motor with less thrust. Do you think it would actually get higher with a longer burn, just not as fast??? still gonna be fast though. big motor! Maybe something in the 10 plus second burn time???

Maybe I try a moonburner this season. Apogee should definitely be higher. Something to think about! Many other plans this year though. Starting a 75mm minimum diameter project for Airfest…

@@pathtouch1 YESSSS!!! super skinny light weight MOONBURNER, AS BIG AS WILL FIT!!!!
      8,000 ft. LOL....15,000ft!!!
and if possible the teeny tiny light weight camera if you can.

@ i was just thinking about something. try to set the altitude world record for a estes rocket.
maybe that yellow estes with the right moonburner could do it...what do you think.
there is probably no record standing for a estes cardboard tube. so whatever you set might just be the bench mark. and make a callout video to the rocket community to try and beat "THE ESTES CARDBOARD TUBE ALT CHALLENGE".
if i know people, when a challenge is involved, stuff gets crazy. it would be nuts if 5 years down the line they are attempting estes cardboard spaceshots LOLOL.

So that was an actual sleigh ride when you land on a frozen lake and get dragged by the chute!

@@BrianKelsay I’m pretty sure? Haha. All the important parts where we might be had at least 8” if not more. She’s the largest lake in NH though so it doesn’t happen every year.

There are a couple of places out there that basically never freeze over because of current (think narrow areas in between islands, river inlets/outlets) but yeah it is for the most part completely frozen over and probably will be until early-mid March if we don't get any major warmups

I mean, couldn't you varnish the cardboard to make it water resistant?
Now, do the same thing, but sharpen the fin leading edges 😉
