Any idea why it got cancelled so abruptly? I've searched online and can't find any details beyond the ratings.

I read that it had ran it's course. The audiences were starting to watch other newer shows of the time, which pushed The Newlywed Game further down in the TV slots. So they bowed out gracefully.
