Hey Dave, In my teens, 20s and 30s I spent 100s of hours squirrel hunting. While my friends were all deer hunting, spending all day in the woods getting skunked, I always got some action. Typically a couple in the morning and a couple in the evening. At 55 now I haven't hunted in years. My neighbor gave me a 4 that he shot and I made a couple videos...Dressing Squirrel...the easy way and the other one is-Squirrel Stew. What a great way to spend the fall and winter n the outdoors. good eating to.

For twelve dollars you can purchase a metal detecting wand at Harbor Freight that even comes with a nylon holster. If you have any questions whether there are any shot left over in the meat, just run that over the body and it will pinpoint exactly where the metal ball is. I do this with quail after cleaning and dressing them, before I either freeze or cook them. I have bitten down on way to many pieces of lead shot to be comfortable with. Cooking the meat with the lead in it is where you can run into toxic health issues.
Thanks for the video and as always, Thumbs up.
    God Bless ya bro.

Dave, we just got back from a 4 day upland game hunt in Seqouia National Forest out here in California. Grey squirrels are a plenty up there. Warm up the crock pot!! It is very eery when you walk down a trail on a hunt and come back through only to find a set of Mountain Lion tracks over top of your tracks. Great vid

Anyone concerned about eating squirrel because of disease, shouldn't be. After skinning the little bugger, inspect the meat. Give it a sniff. Y'all should be able to tell if the meat is good or not. Hint: If the meat has worms crawling out of it, a bunch of sores, or smells like week old gym socks, don't eat it, it's bait. If it looks like one Dave shot.... nice, pink, healthy looking meat... chow down. If your still concerned, cook it well done. Squirrel is a good source of protein

  • @joryd8262

dave somewhat off topic question, ive noticed a few times you dont "field dress" or gut your animals right away. How long do you have before the natural bacteria in the organs start to contaminate the meat enough that a person should worry? Hope that makes sense, love your videos keep em coming!

  • @bushcraftchip

you can take a phenolic threaded rod (3/8") and a piece of plastic( old credit card) and make a cutting sound of a squirrel cutting open nuts. This brings out other ones because they think another one is eating and everything is cool. Check it out. scrape the card over the threads to mimic cutting.Hunting season is awesome, great vid....

I apologize, I have been gone for about ten years or so. I figure things have changed a lot since I moved to the desert. LOL I wasnt berating you in any way and as I said I enjoy your videos. Have you had any troubles there with warbles on the squirrels. When I left they almost always had them before the first frost. Oh and I always preferred red squirrels for eating as they are bigger than greys.

  • @srspower

I meant to say, the main advantage with a shotgun is that you can shoot in to the air safely and shoot moving targets effectively. Nobody should be shooting squirrels out of tree's with a rifle, even a .22lr. You should always know where your bullet is going.

I agree with you on the shotgun vs rifle in the early season. I switch to a .22 in the colder months. By the way, check out TIm Farmers video on Squirrel n Dumplins. Its real easy, and great for older squirrels.

Poor little squirrel!! He looks so lonely just laying there by himself!! Too bad you couldn't shoot another to keep him company. You do know that squirrel is like a potato chip? You can't eat just one!! LOL!! I spent a bunch of Saturdays shooting squirrels with a 22. Tons of fun, and we used shorts in a single shot bolt action, so it was really quiet. Good hunting!!

!2 ga is an all around best gun. I have hunted since a kid and carried a 12 ga for the past 30 years and have taken birds, rabbits, ducks and deer with it. In canada a rifle is useless since you get 2 months out of a year to carry them, unless there below 23 calibre. Then they are classed as a small game rifle.A shot gun you can carry pretty much year round, anyhow good vid. Tho never ate a squirrel unless im starving lol. tho i suppose no diff then a rabbit which i eat lots of.

Have you ever "barked" a squirrel, where you intentionally shoot the tree, killing the squirrel by the concussion of the round and not affecting the meat or pelt? Just something I've read about.

You know what your talking about when it comes to squirrel hunting. I stalk with intermitten long calculated steps in a random rhythm that sounds like squirrels dickin' around in the leaves. If you sqr hunt enough, you know what I mean. I draw them out as they think there is another sqr is in their territory. And I watch/listen 270 degrees between sets of steps. I prefer the "quiet" of a unshrouded pcp airgun or a very long barreled rimfire with subsonic for stealthy hunting.

Anyone that is worried about the hunting laws in Ohio could simply take a few minutes to look them up on the Ohio DNR website. Dave is a seasoned hunter and trapper; I'm sure he is responsible enough to know the laws for his state before posting a video of himself hunting on his own property. Of course there could be some whacked out off the wall unknown law affecting his hunt that he doesn't know about, kinda like what happened to Ted Nugent (who also goes to great lengths to know the law).

  • @Atkrdu
    @Atkrdu 11 років тому

You can (legally) just hunt as you please on your property where you are? That's awesome! What about tactics? Any issues if you use arrows with two edges, stone blades, no blade, etc...? Any issue with what season you hunt what with what? Not so big on flintlocks, myself- but I'd love to be able to just go out with a throwing stick & a bow whenever I got hungry. Maybe some fish traps or nets for that (not terribly good with hook & line).

  • @MikeSr39

Ever,"bark" squirrel? Sometime when you are out with a big game caliber rifle(can be muzzleloader,or,standard) and see small game? You can get them without destroying the whole Caracas by shooting right under them. And the material flying off of the tree or limb will fly up into the body. The shack alone will usually kill them if the materia doesn't. Great idea from frontier days.

I don't mind people squirrel hunting with whatever they want but you will eat it. There is a kid that came over asked me for some shells. I gave him a box of shells. in 20 minutes last year he shot here. all the shells gone. He had squirrels but when I asked why was he shooting so much. He said he shoots the nest then whatever I can when they run out. I said if I ever caught him I would call the law. Now I charge him double for ammo than stores

Nice little pocket knife there, I have been the scoping the SAS farmer model myself, it has a nice little saw and is more thin than most. They dropped the small blade to do it.
Great idea for a bag I may try that was out the other day and had no place to put stuff.
Keep up the vids. There is life beyond kissing the death sticks, it kind of sucks sometimes, as memories are wrapped in smoke. But I was a slave to it. Did'nt like that.

Another method to carry squirrels involves splitting their toes apart. You take a knife and slice between two toes, this will expose the tendon running under the toe. You can take a sharp 3" or 4" stick and run it between the tendon and the toe. The stick will give you a good carrying handle and you can carry multiple squirrels with this method.

Old Timer bowie? Sure if you want. Or you could buy an Old Hickory butcher knife for less and use that as an excuse - not that you need one - to make your own sheath.
Also, learn about little knives and you'll love them. Right tool for the right job and all that. Enjoy whatever you chose to go with.

Dave, I enjoy you taking me on a hunt with you in this video. As always, I learn a lot. That was very instructive, as far as distance, shot volume and pellet recovery with the game animal. What are your thoughts about using #4 and #5 shot on small game? I would assume with the larger diameter pellet, one would have to be closer because of pellet spread with fewer number of pellets? But larger diameter pellets would penetrate deeper I would think for even coon sized game?
