Pressure Bandage Application Technique

Pressure bandages, or dressings as they’re also known, are great medical devices designed to help control bleeding. They aid in applying pressure to various areas of the body where a traumatic injury has been sustained. Be mindful for injuries that cause severe bleeding on limbs, where applying a tourniquet can be the quickest way to control bleeding. Also, consider that applying direct pressure manually (with hands and no medical aid devices) may sometimes be your only option due to availability of gear, amongst other factors, or be the prime manner in which to control bleeding until help arrives or a transfer of care occurs to medical personnel.
Pressure bandages allow the user to treat a wound where the need for applying pressure to help control bleeding exists but is able to free up their hands to treat other injuries or for other tasks. Wrap the bandage snug against the wound, with the non-adhesive pad over the injury, but ensure it isn’t completely constricting the area cutting off all circulation, which can turn it into a tourniquet. Train with the pressure bandages you carry and intend to use.
