Use a wheel barrow tub. Stand it up, cut your firewall to fit around your engine, and weld it in. I've seen it done in a lot of hot rods and works pretty good.
Matt, once it is all done, can you show us a close up view of how the slider boxes work? Thanks for another great vid... I am impressed that you got such a huge engine in that thing.
That's funny I was looking at a Comanche on the classifieds with a blown motor and had the thought of an LS swap and then this video popped up later the same day 😂
That truck intake manifold will give you better low end torque than what a Corvette or Camaro intake would, so I would say that's a good thing to keep it! The project's looking great Matt.
I know you're done already but for anyone in the same boat I used 2000 F body stamped steel manifolds on my swap. They fit great after I cut the flanges off. *edit* Yeah Matt you shoulda watched my vids before you chopped the frame up :) I didn't cut anything off the frame-
Jess Neal I’m glad I read this comment. Need to find manifolds for my MJ Comanche V8 swap. I’m documenting my work on here too. Jeep Comanche Pickup V8 Swap - Part 6 - Test Fitting ua-cam.com/video/UD0tEgO894k/v-deo.html
You're very right about the truck LS intakes being taller, Matt. I did a lot of studying into what it would take to install an LS into an XJ or ZJ. Lots of info on XJ swaps if you want to look at what Novak conversions has to say about it. Nigh unto nothing in the line of information on ZJ swaps though, sadly.
I’m wondering if it would have been easier (I don’t have a clue) to put the Comanche on that old CJ frame with the motor already installed in that old Frame.
Yeah, I know that but The "frame" of the unibody can be cut out and the CJ frame can take it's place. I know the unibody Frame isn't a real frame per say but it could be done. I've seen unibody's put on Frames before. Just need the frame to be channeled down the body.
I know it’s a little late, but you could have just flipped the headers around to the other side... LS heads do happen to be ambidextrous and the exhaust going to the front does alow for... turbos!! Or just downpipe/haterpipe. It is a wheeling rig, so doesn’t really need mufflers lol
I know u got this Matt! Your an awesome fabricator! And I have a suggestion for the radiator if it would still be cheap. You could relocate it to save more space in the engine bay. Just a suggestion tho.
Hey Matt I know this is 4 days ago but you should try to reposition it drop it in before you get that far into the motor Bay and or set the motor down drop the frame on top of motor love ur videos / builds
So, the center gravity of whatever is hanging from the hoist will always be directly under the hook. That being the case, as long as the hook isn't in front of the front casters on your hoist, it can't tip, so your awesome hoist leg extension pipes aren't necessary.
hammer that fire wall real good had to smash mine in my nissan patrol truck manifold or intake has better low down tourque over standard ls intake alot of guys in Australia run the truck manifold on our winch trucks
First off I've watched many, many hours of your videos. In one of them you came really hard on your "Warren " bumper. In another you realized you bent your frame. Just a thought....do you think maybe these cuts along with the future repairs are where it bent? Maybe you already covered this in another video and I just missed it. Anyway keep doing what you do.,you have saved me many hours of doing jobs in my head over and over again before doing it IRL.
I put an amc 401 stroker and 400th 205transfer case and Dana 44s in a Comanche back in 2005 ish. Was not very difficult. If I kept the 4 link I would have been more work.
What you have is the ls1 which has the hight intake manifold, the ls3 has the low profile intake but you've got this far with it i wouldn't waste your money on another intake.
Hi bro, it serge from lebanon again😊 very nice job u did today, i have a jeep liberty 2003 what do u think about it? Hope u will have a project about it. Keep up the great job
Will the headers fit on the opposite sides? That should bring the collectors forward where the frame widens and then you'd just need to shorten the cross section of the downpipe.
YEA, I think "may have been easier to drop it on the CJ frame LOL" especially every time he uploads a new vid, and more and more Comanche "disappears". But it's more fun to watch what he comes up with this way.
Silly question, would it be possible to have a steering gearbox inside the dash with an inches-long shaft from the steering wheel and run pressure hoses to a full hydraulic steer axle?
I think a 4.0 stroker 4.7 would have fit much easier. And then just go higher gearing and save tons in gas. But Im super excited to see how she runs afterwards and like seeing how you over come these grizzle bear heart in going in a dog's body situation.
150$ block hugger headers off Amazon fit most LS swaps as well as you’re going to get, whoever built that CJ used a goofy header setup. Block huggers would have fit inside the frame rails, they did on mine. Theyd probably help with the steering shaft too. But if you can hack it up and get it to work, great! Hacking shit up is fun.
Novak sells a nice set of MJ/XJ LS conversion headers.
Use a wheel barrow tub. Stand it up, cut your firewall to fit around your engine, and weld it in. I've seen it done in a lot of hot rods and works pretty good.
Always fun when you bring out the "persuasion" hammer to massage the metal. Loving the build, can't wait to see the finished product.
I love that your solution to any issue is to just cut it off or use a bigger hammer! My dad would be proud!
“If i start things wrong i like to finish them wrong” Love this can do logic
Nice cover with switching from two jack stands to one jack stand goof...lol
You don't shy away from a challenge Matt. It will be interesting to see how you strengthen the frame rails.
This explains why people put small block Mopars in xjs. Gotta be a whole lot easier. Lol
How about big block mopars little massaging the frame rails a late model mopar wil fit.
always *fun* workin with the *bfh!* 👍
Nice Ace-Ventura-Like-A-Glove moment! Keeper gowin!
Matt, once it is all done, can you show us a close up view of how the slider boxes work? Thanks for another great vid... I am impressed that you got such a huge engine in that thing.
With how many times you had the engine in and out, you could really say you 'mated' the too😂
Love the 'use what ya brung' method!
That's funny I was looking at a Comanche on the classifieds with a blown motor and had the thought of an LS swap and then this video popped up later the same day 😂
ls6 intake an stock truck manifolds an that thing would of fit with out all that cutting lol but hay its entertainment for the channel😁😁
Putting in an automatic... sweeeeeeeeet! I have no problems with manual transmissions, but I prefer and automatic when I am wheeling.
That truck intake manifold will give you better low end torque than what a Corvette or Camaro intake would, so I would say that's a good thing to keep it! The project's looking great Matt.
Haha great moto , if you can’t do it right at least get it done!
good Job Mat. Keep cutting itl fit.
I know you're done already but for anyone in the same boat I used 2000 F body stamped steel manifolds on my swap. They fit great after I cut the flanges off. *edit* Yeah Matt you shoulda watched my vids before you chopped the frame up :) I didn't cut anything off the frame-
why would he want to replace those nice manifolds with crap stamped steel ones?
At the HP level that motor is at the F body manifolds would make nearly zero impact. Better/easier fitment and no frame cutting.
Jess Neal lol
Jess Neal I’m glad I read this comment. Need to find manifolds for my MJ Comanche V8 swap.

U.A.T. a comanche has a unibody

You can do it matt you know what you are doing brother
you should do a wj sometime in the future
Everyone is talking about the headers, but you can use a Camaro oil pan as well. They are almost eight inches shorter and hold almost as much oil.
There's always time to do it right the second time ;)
Nice, I am loving this build so far.
Screw it, just run the exhaust up through the hood.
chad alcock
Then ya can turbo it. 😁
Stock exhaust manifolds and custom y pipe might have been an option?
I know it’s a little late, but you could have just flipped the headers around to the other side... LS heads do happen to be ambidextrous and the exhaust going to the front does alow for... turbos!! Or just downpipe/haterpipe. It is a wheeling rig, so doesn’t really need mufflers lol
Time to take a 15.52 minute shit.
Then I'm gonna watch this video.
I'd cut the inner fenders and frame completely out, go get that CJ frame and merge the two... but Hey , it's still good fun watching.
I know u got this Matt! Your an awesome fabricator! And I have a suggestion for the radiator if it would still be cheap. You could relocate it to save more space in the engine bay. Just a suggestion tho.

Yeah for the BFH!!!
Cant wait to see how you figure out the steering
Cut first, ask questions later, what's with this guy! 😁👍
Man, that looks like fun!🖒
I need that transfer case in my life
Go to HF and get the 8 Ton Long Ram Air/Hydraulic Jack to replace the one in your engine hoist, it will make your life so much easier
Now this is RAD !!!!!
So, the center gravity of whatever is hanging from the hoist will always be directly under the hook. That being the case, as long as the hook isn't in front of the front casters on your hoist, it can't tip, so your awesome hoist leg extension pipes aren't necessary.
Cut it up more if anything , I’m not mad I’m learning and loving this build , keep going
wow damn lots of fitting changes to go
7mins 14 seconds in is jey fabrication I love it
Damn that was a lot of work you put in
how the heck do you line up everything so the driveshaft will be aligned? maybe youll cover this in motor mount vid :)
You need to upload more often
Nice product ilm think to do my camache. Soon I put more miles on it lol
hammer that fire wall real good
had to smash mine in my nissan patrol
truck manifold or intake has better low down tourque over standard ls intake alot of guys in Australia run the truck manifold on our winch trucks
This is a very hammery episode!

I think log style manifolds would have been something to look at, Matt.
Pretty sure corvette headers woulda worked without cutting the frame...
Run what you brung, iv always heard ppl say " Dance with the girl you brought" hahah
What you have is the ls1 which has the hight intake manifold, the ls3 has the low profile intake but you've got this far with it i wouldn't waste your money on another intake.
I came to see what it would take to LS my Comanche. Yup I'm going back with a 4.0 lol
should have bought novak motor mounts and used camaro manifold fits in my Cherokee no problem
I just realized after watching matt for a few years. That he sounds very similar to mr. Rogers
Haha I was looking for this. Also a bit like Old Greg.
No need, it fits!
caught myself liking the video before viewing it
guess I'm not gonna be productive for the next 17 minutes....
I would trade those headers for manifolds and port them out a lot easier and cheap
Love the videos! Keep them coming!
Love your videos, you guys should make a trip some time to NC and come wheel at uwharrie
Bro you can do it that looks good Matt nice job my buddy and I got a LS motor into his RX7 it's a rape date and it was fun lol good work mat
I was gonna say... You got your work cut out for you... More like... You have a lot of cutting to do... keep the progress coming, csnt wait to watch.
i've heard s10 ls swap headers would work i got block hugger headers cause i was to cheap to buy the novak headers for my 350
Nice job Matt.Run what you brung....
Would have been cool to put it right behind he cab like monster trucks, etc do!
Use LS3 manifolds off a Camaro, they work for XJ's.
Go with open headers thru the Hood or headers thru the Hood with small mufflers
flip the headers upside down and plumb the exhaust out the top?
"Ima smack that." LOL Love it!
Hack&slash!
Hello put a bigass hood scoop on it and get 10 cool points :-) :-) PS build your own headers
Looks like a cowl hood is in ur future lol
How will you determine your driveline angles when you install the engine? Will you make all the adjustments at the rear axle?
Sure, but it’s not that important on a trailer queen. Although she rides great at 60mph!
You are getting there. But I agree with someone else. It may have been easier to hang Comanche body panels on the Jeepframe
I think some of the stock manifolds may have fit, would have had to cut less out at least but seems like you will fabricate your way around it.
It hits right there but I can’t just wack they off... :)
I getting the feeling it would be easier to just put the cab on a frame
YEA, I think "may have been easier to drop it on the CJ frame LOL" especially every time he uploads a new vid, and more and more Comanche "disappears". But it's more fun to watch what he comes up with this way.
I think if you made custom tube chassis, the engine and the coilover will fit easier. (I think)
wishing you dropped the Comanche "Tub" on the CJ frame at this point? lol JK. I really want to see how you get out of this one!👍
LS into a Comanche? Ive been clickbaited
No, real deal! Thanks for this magic! need to see it work still sir! cant wait
Hardly a Comanche anymore lol
Put electric fans and get rid of the clutched fan, then you can def put a rad in there. They aren’t to expensive.
Anyone else watch this thinking "The stock manifolds would have almost been a perfect fit"
F body intake and accessory brackets would reduce the height considerably also.
Does the Comanche and the Cherokee have the engine bay?
Nice video
Silly question, would it be possible to have a steering gearbox inside the dash with an inches-long shaft from the steering wheel and run pressure hoses to a full hydraulic steer axle?
Ya, you’re talking about an orbitol
No big deal; the outside of the frame rails becomes the inside. Weld some c-channel to the outside of the remaining bits and it will all be good.
Nice idea
may have to add some frame support
What are you gonna end up doing for a transmission mount?
Gotta watch the rest of the series!
I think a 4.0 stroker 4.7 would have fit much easier. And then just go higher gearing and save tons in gas. But Im super excited to see how she runs afterwards and like seeing how you over come these grizzle bear heart in going in a dog's body situation.
No because LS
LS much more top heavy and makes the front much heavier. The 4.0 is more balanced in the center.
MEGARUN!
Haven't plenty of folks put an LS in the XJ? Are the MJ and XJ that different? What am I missing here?
I dunno 🤷♂️
150$ block hugger headers off Amazon fit most LS swaps as well as you’re going to get, whoever built that CJ used a goofy header setup. Block huggers would have fit inside the frame rails, they did on mine. Theyd probably help with the steering shaft too. But if you can hack it up and get it to work, great! Hacking shit up is fun.
Also don’t see many LS swaps running the clutch fan, but they do work good if they fit.
You could flip the headers upside down and have the exhaust come out the hood or fenders 😂
"Like a glove"
