One of the big things that bothers me about James and a lot of other people like him is how much window dressing and aesthetics gets rewarded. A big thing I look for in video essays is if your sources or other resources related to what you're talking about are made easily accessible. A lot of disabled, Black, queer, etc users on this platform who don't have access to the same time or resources and it's bothersome how much they get dismissed despite pioneering so much important discussion material. They often don't have amazing audio or their videos have very minimal editing. A lot of Black disabled people I know can't even make them in the first place and I have to engage with them just through conversations and engagement. The profit motive under this is also another thing because properly researching videos about race, gender, disability, etc takes a lot of time and research to ensure you're covering your bases. James video about Nintendo always stuck out to me when he describes the portrayal of the Legend of Zelda as "staggeringly neutral" in spite of not just the Anti-Black/Orientalist racism that's present throughout the series as well as the transphobia that occurred literally seconds after the clip he used. It stuck out a lot to me how a white gay man would sit here and declare a work fine because he could superficially project queer themes onto it and completely ignore the transmisogyny and racism. I'll admit I didn't engage with James Somerton specifically because I only watched two videos and thought both were mediocre and ignored him right before the big plagiarism dropped. So appreciate your perspective, fam. One lesson I think should come from this is to actually listen to creators not for their aesthetics or production but who they are as people and what they stand for.
Yeah, it's messed up how he misinformed so many people and was racist and racist. A queer channel I recommend checking out is Dreamsounds. Sadly, the channel isn't making any new content. But Marlene (the owner and runner of it) made a lot of amazing videos on Disney and LGBTQ topics, especially in the music side of Disney. Both the positive and negative of it all. I am glad that you rightfully called out James for his bigotry and how he easily misinformed people. And yay, videos on Princess and the Frog are coming!!! Can't wait to see them!!!
It's so important to be able to consume things critically. UA-cam isn't school, but the apparent lack of interest in using a search engine directly creates the perfect storm for these issues in video essays etc. to spread like wildfire. A broken clock is right twice a day, but any clock can break. People have been so quick to jump to conclusions lately. Like, I guess it's not from the worst of intentions, but it sure does have a lot of bad impacts. This whole thing feels like a headache
The anti-intellectualism thing is such a good point to bring up. As for the rest, feels like people took the title of the video too much at face value imo.
Hope you get a chance to talk about Amphibia some time. I really enjoyed that show too! It really impressed me how much planting and pay off it had that I wasn't even looking for but got anyways

SCREAMING LMAOOOOO
Hey, on the bright side, if the Princess and the Frog video is only ready when the Disney+ series comes, that might be perfect timing!

I feel bad that i used to enjoy his contents. Hearing this and his "apology" video makes me icky.
The fact that he was just soo sad just because Nick ditched him and avoided the word "plagiarism" is just so eyerolling
Technically you enjoyed other people's work, which you can still go and enjoy without supporting him! : D

"pretty much every phobia and -ism out there" ❤
"get back to doing your thing and make sure you're truthful" THIS is why we love your channel
Thank you! Especially for the anti-intellectualism angle, I had not encountered that in any other videos or comments about JS.
Stop stop he's already dead! Well I guess not given his recent "apology".
oh trust me this is my last time talking about this fr. im not letting it consume me any longer.
Well, this has definitely been a cautionary tale...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm very curious what exactly this video is about after Hbomberguy's plagiarism video that heavily (and rightfully) targeted James Somerton

Im subscribed to Jessie gender
