This is my first year joining!!!!! I've been watching from sidelines for SO LONG, and now I'm confident in my art skills. Even if I only make silly sketches, that's okay!! I promised not to be too hard on myself. Also I've been wanting an excuse to draw more since art block has been an on and off thing all of 2023/start of 2024. Kicking my BUTT. BUT this gives me amazing and cool characters to draw :0

I've been doing Artfight since 2018, so I have a few tips 1. Don't feel obligated to revenge someone!! I often forget this myself but revenges aren't mandatory! I understand wanting to give back to someone for drawing your character, but it isn't worth it to have revenge pile up and prevent you from having fun because you're stressing over revenging someone. 2. Don't feel like Artfight is only for the metaphorical "big kids", you don't need any sort of social media presence to join, you don't even need one to receive attacks! The way Artfight is formatted makes it so anyone can happen upon your character, it's very likely you'll get at least one attack even if you have no social media following. Honestly I think there not being a way to directly search users kinda benefits this 3. While it really isn't about who wins or not, it's still fun to be competitive if you want! Playfully bickering with your friends on different teams can be a lot of fun! However, don't let playful competitiveness become toxic or leak onto strangers who may not know you're joking. While I may call my friends "Seafoam scum", I don't actually care who wins or not. I think the nature of artfight already lends itself to not be toxically competative, but there's always an expectation. 4. This isn't a requirement, but it's good to leave a comment on all attacks you receive to show that you appreciate it. It can be disheartening when someone puts a ton of effort into drawing a character only to not even know if they saw it. 5. Have fun!! Basic tip I know, but it's important to remember that it's all for fun!

The website is probably going to be extremely laggy for the first day or two. 2. To get attacks, you need to make attacks. Most people will like your art no matter what it looks like! 3. You do not need to return every single attack you get. The quickest way to get burnout during Art Fight is by forcing yourself to draw characters you don't vibe with. and finally 4. Have fun with it! Art Fight is the perfect chance to experiment, wind down, and just have fun with your art. Try not to let it stress you out and you'll have so much fun.
The website was tricky to navigate at first, but I've got most of my characters up by now and my profile looks super cool...thankfully there's lots of tutorials on youtube and helpful folks in the discord...seafoam ftw
My first year joining! It's super exciting and yes, the website can be quite overwhelming. I had my sister and another friend encourage me to join (at my own pace) since I've been in a big art burn out and needed something to do to get my motivation kicking again. You definitely will be surprised with how many people love your characters and art, and genuinely already making friends two weeks from July. I believe it's also a great way to focus on your own skills too and pick some goals you'd like to focus on. A tip I found useful was to go ahead and save character references in case the site goes down at the highest traffic moments. Secondly, creating a hitlist will help if anyone wants to be out front about wanting revenges or wanting you to attack them. Always leave a comment for any follows, attacks, etc. It just shows that you care and really makes someone's day, plus a great way to support the art community as a whole. Other than that, I hope you have a great art fight and thank you for this tutorial! Let's have a good one!

God, I cannot express how happy it’s making me to see a new wave of concise and efficient AF tutorials coming out this year!! I remember years ago watching my friend do artfight and feeling sooo overwhelmed, and the only tuts I found were unappealing and had way too much info haha😭😭 this is BRILLIANT!! When i tell that i've seen SO MANY artfight tutoral(-ish) videos, but this is definetily the one, its the best one i've seen so far, like the way you expain it is the exact way i need to have things explained, so im glad i found your video, thank you for making it
My personal tip is when you bookmark a character in the "Order" category write the current year it is when ou bookmark it, (ex : I bookmark a character in 2024 write 2024) so this way the charaters are kinda sorted by years and wont show up first next year when you bookmark new character

I joined super last two years ago, ended up missing it fully last year though. I was heartbroken, but now I’m here to make up for a full year and 3/4th of artfight.
Funny you should upload this on the year that I finally decided to try out artfight! And, yeah, I can relate to the pregame reference thing, as I am scrambling to pull together a few (2or 3) more reference sheets in the last week before the fight starts lmao (I’m still vibing and having fun) Can’t wait to have a fun time making art for people!
I recommend trying if you want to and just stopping or taking a break if you feel burnout coming :3 I'll have to be on the lookout for burnout myself too 🫡
I think I’ll join this year! I’ve always heard of art fight but never got engaged with it nor knew what it was about. Now that I want to be involved more with my art, this video did help me understand art fight. I’ll totally try it out! I also want to post content again here so I may talk about my experience once I participate :)

I've been drawing 80% of the time this month before artfight. I want to draw others so I can get over my perfectionism and get more in the zone so I can use my energy to the max. It will help me in the future so I'm gonna do it!
I heard about art fight a while ago, but only yesterday I actually looked into it and decided to join. I know I'll burn myself out if I just make character sheets all day, so I'm planning to draw one every day or every other day until July. I have one done currently, and I am so excited >:]
I had a video pop up to me that was like a year old, and now this?! Must be fate. I didn’t even know something like this existed, BUT ITS AWESOME!! Im definitely gonna hop in! Although I’ll probably be one of the people making character sheets in a week speedruns xD
The advice about not rushing to make ref sheets is pretty helpful since I've been caught up with exams until recently so I haven't had the time to make refs/finish designs. Honestly this vid meade artfight seem a lot more approachable as a first timer 😭
This has been said time and time again but *always* save a few references of the characters you want to draw somewhere offsite shortly before the fight begins because the site is going to be constantly crashing/slow for the first few days of July.
I really, REALLY would like to join, especially because team stardust looks so pretty, but there’s a huge problem 😔. I’ve been drawing since I was around 4, and I have been for 9 years. However.. my art skills are beginner worthy. Maybe even worse. I haven’t improved in years, and I’ve been putting a lot of effort into it, but it doesn’t work. I’m not happy drawing anymore, I don’t enjoy it, and on top of that I don’t like the finished results, half the time I never finish it anyway. I’ve followed tutorials for soooo long, and they don’t help. I tried to just do it on my own with a few references on the side, but that didn’t help either. It feels like everyone else is improving and I’m still at my 6 year old level. I really, really want to be able to draw things and be happy while doing it, and be happy with the results, but I’m just not anymore. It feels like a chore, when it used to be my favorite thing because I was optimistic I would improve. But I haven’t, at least not the the point I even slightly like it. I don’t want to blame this on autism or anything but could that be a reason?? Or am I just simply not doing art right 😀..
I feel you on the not improving part last year I thought the same until I was HEAVILY motivated to improve my art style and anatomy skills(which is still not that good) by drawing references(it comes easy to me) I have more of a problem of thinking about my oc ideas so I use Pinterest to inspire my artwork!If drawings not for you try new hobbies like painting, digital art, colleges,knitting,editing,ect that you like!Don't force yourself to do it if you feel that way
4+9 = you're 13? I would not lose hope at all. In those years you're still developing the executive function needed to focus on just mastering one small part of drawing at a time. Like, at 6, you wouldn't have the attention span to sit there and notice all the details or follow all the instructions yet. Now you might be a little more ready. But I only got there sometime in my 30's, when I was like, "ok, I want to finally make this happen" and really grinded it for the next few years. It didn't happen in my teens or 20's, although I made a few starts at it in that time before getting sidetracked. That's the main barrier: the artists that go through the barrier use some very narrow, abstract drawing exercises like the ones in the Dodson(Keys to Drawing) or Nicolaides(Natural Way to Draw) books. If you use those exercises as a game to challenge yourself to study pictures you like(instead of just copying them any way you can) you notice more things about what you're looking at and how you're making marks. It's just, it's hard to slow down and do that kind of drill because it doesn't lead to pretty results immediately like a tutorial.
In my opinion, improvement can come naturally when you’re frustrated with being ‘stuck’ (I say this because I’m sure even if you don’t think so, you’ve definitely improved in some way!) Don’t stress! There is no one way to art, everyone is different! At the end of the day, don’t focus on needing to improve, instead do what you want, or take a break if you’re not finding joy :) don’t force yourself, and maybe if you want to come back into it, you’ll get the improvement you’ve been looking for. The art journey you take is yours, so pay attention to how you doing, not what you perceive as others getting ahead. A lot of people I know put their art down too, even when it’s “way better than everyone else’s”. Heck, I put my art down constantly, especially looking at others. My point is, focus on yourself. You’ll get better, you’ll improve. Improvement isn’t subjective, and it’s not good for you to think of your art in that way. I’m sure it’s great! If you don’t feel happy drawing, step away from it. But I encourage you to come back to it and keep trying if you want to ❤️
I always thought artfight was something else. This is more like art trading or aggressive art gifting. Still fun, but I feel like it needs a more descriptive title. It sounds like a great way to practice your art. It can be less stressful to draw other people's characters, because it's already made all you need to do is draw it.
hey this is just a question i have!! i really love the idea of artfight, and want to join but: i'm a completely new artist and am objectively bad at it, would it still be a good idea to join? i have done art before but that was very simple and small drawings where i did not care if it looked good or not / didn't care about improving. so i do have some experience, but not much. if it was just about drawing then i would of course go for it, but since it's about gifting / trading i feel like it's a different story. it feels unfair to give someone art that just isn't good and very simple, 'expecting' them to give something good back. one big thing that gives me doubts is rule 7 of the upload rules, "art must display clear effort and cannot be over simplified." i just worry that even though i put effort into my art, it's so small and simple it might not look like it. i just don't want to offend or disappoint anyone. i know, i know, "art is for fun" and "if you put your heart into it, they'll see the effort" but i don't know how much of that translates into real life lol. i don't know the artfight culture and how people feel about receiving beginner art. thanks for any responses :)

@@fledge__heartinc yes! I've gotten art from befinner artists before and I've encouraged my beginner artist sibling to join too! Just go out there and have fun!! (I also only submitted 2 attacks in 2022 so yeah, no need to make more attacks than you want)
Nah it's not too late, art fight literally hasn't even started yet. You could join halfway through and do like 1 attack and it wouldn't be too late. I recommend not procrastinating until next year if you just want to try it!
I know it may sounds weird for an artist to say, but can you participate in the Art Fight and attack other users without adding your own characters? Funnily enough, currently I don't have any interesting characters or characters wich haven't appear in one of my primary social media and wich can be recognised by someone who knows me personally, and I don't want to risk my confidentiality. I just want to draw some random characters, practice my skills, make people happy and have some fun on my own :P P.S I tried to find an answer through search but I didn't ((
SO I have just started art a little while ago and this sounds AMAZING to partake in, but my art skills aren't really good and I dont know if I should still join despite my not-so-good art, and could you maybe submit any fan art of a already existing character, like if I did a drawing of I guess Pac-man would I be able to submit that or is that listed in the actual rules. This is my second year, and I encourage everyone to join if you want to! I’d suggest not to focus on how many attacks you get, but if you don’t know who to attack, people who don’t have many always seems really happy to get one, but really anyone is! Before attacking someone, be aware of their permissions and boundaries, especially as a minor attacking an adult or vice versa. Some people don’t want people way older/younger than them interacting or attacking them in general or specific characters of theirs. Just be aware! It’s a lot of fun, and I feel like it can be a pretty unique experience, I don’t see too many things like this on the internet unless they lurk in the shadows within social media sites. Honestly I think anyone considering should at least try it, and if you don’t have time or get burnt out, that’s okay, you don’t have to be on the entire time no matter what :) If anyone wants to attack me I’ll try to attack back! I really don't get art fight. I get people say it's for fun but I don't get the fun. Couldn't people just have like a twitter tag or something that says "feel free to draw my character" or something? Idk if it's like a community thing and if it is a community thing, then it's hard to imagine getting into it because from the outside, it just doesn't seem special
I'd recommend just trying to look around the site or asking someone for help. If you genuinely don't wanna join this year that's fine, but I feel like procrastinating until next year will just put you in the same position as you are now.
Hello there! This is my first time joining Art Fight, but am worried over the rules and how I should handle them. Because I want to make a comic or animated series with my characters so I am worried if that somehow breaks any rules-
I'm not sure if I should start now or next year, I had some ideas for some of my OCs but I didn’t draw them yet, I also don’t know if I have time to do it or not
You still have a week before the fight begins, so if you wanna design a character before it starts I think you have time! And you don't necessarily need to have everything ready by July 1st

Technically yes ☝🏻 you can just draw other people's ocs. But there's also a cool thing where some people will upload a "character" but it's actually a prompt for someone to design them a character instead. So then if you want others to design you characters instead of drawing ones you already have, that's possible :D

I think I’ll join this year! I’ve always heard of art fight but never got engaged with it nor knew what it was about. Now that I want to be involved more with my art, this video did help me understand art fight. I’ll totally try it out! I also want to post content again here so I may talk about my experience once I participate :)

I've been drawing 80% of the time this month before artfight. I want to draw others so I can get over my perfectionism and get more in the zone so I can use my energy to the max. It will help me in the future so I'm gonna do it!

I heard about art fight a while ago, but only yesterday I actually looked into it and decided to join. I know I'll burn myself out if I just make character sheets all day, so I'm planning to draw one every day or every other day until July. I have one done currently, and I am so excited >:]

The advice about not rushing to make ref sheets is pretty helpful since I've been caught up with exams until recently so I haven't had the time to make refs/finish designs. Honestly this vid meade artfight seem a lot more approachable as a first timer 😭

This has been said time and time again but *always* save a few references of the characters you want to draw somewhere offsite shortly before the fight begins because the site is going to be constantly crashing/slow for the first few days of July.

I really, REALLY would like to join, especially because team stardust looks so pretty, but there’s a huge problem 😔. I’ve been drawing since I was around 4, and I have been for 9 years. However.. my art skills are beginner worthy. Maybe even worse. I haven’t improved in years, and I’ve been putting a lot of effort into it, but it doesn’t work. I’m not happy drawing anymore, I don’t enjoy it, and on top of that I don’t like the finished results, half the time I never finish it anyway. I’ve followed tutorials for soooo long, and they don’t help. I tried to just do it on my own with a few references on the side, but that didn’t help either. It feels like everyone else is improving and I’m still at my 6 year old level. I really, really want to be able to draw things and be happy while doing it, and be happy with the results, but I’m just not anymore. It feels like a chore, when it used to be my favorite thing because I was optimistic I would improve. But I haven’t, at least not the the point I even slightly like it. I don’t want to blame this on autism or anything but could that be a reason?? Or am I just simply not doing art right 😀..
I feel you on the not improving part last year I thought the same until I was HEAVILY motivated to improve my art style and anatomy skills(which is still not that good) by drawing references(it comes easy to me) I have more of a problem of thinking about my oc ideas so I use Pinterest to inspire my artwork!If drawings not for you try new hobbies like painting, digital art, colleges,knitting,editing,ect that you like!Don't force yourself to do it if you feel that way
4+9 = you're 13? I would not lose hope at all. In those years you're still developing the executive function needed to focus on just mastering one small part of drawing at a time. Like, at 6, you wouldn't have the attention span to sit there and notice all the details or follow all the instructions yet. Now you might be a little more ready. But I only got there sometime in my 30's, when I was like, "ok, I want to finally make this happen" and really grinded it for the next few years. It didn't happen in my teens or 20's, although I made a few starts at it in that time before getting sidetracked.
That's the main barrier: the artists that go through the barrier use some very narrow, abstract drawing exercises like the ones in the Dodson(Keys to Drawing) or Nicolaides(Natural Way to Draw) books. If you use those exercises as a game to challenge yourself to study pictures you like(instead of just copying them any way you can) you notice more things about what you're looking at and how you're making marks. It's just, it's hard to slow down and do that kind of drill because it doesn't lead to pretty results immediately like a tutorial.
In my opinion, improvement can come naturally when you’re frustrated with being ‘stuck’ (I say this because I’m sure even if you don’t think so, you’ve definitely improved in some way!)
Don’t stress! There is no one way to art, everyone is different! At the end of the day, don’t focus on needing to improve, instead do what you want, or take a break if you’re not finding joy :) don’t force yourself, and maybe if you want to come back into it, you’ll get the improvement you’ve been looking for. The art journey you take is yours, so pay attention to how you doing, not what you perceive as others getting ahead. A lot of people I know put their art down too, even when it’s “way better than everyone else’s”. Heck, I put my art down constantly, especially looking at others.
My point is, focus on yourself. You’ll get better, you’ll improve. Improvement isn’t subjective, and it’s not good for you to think of your art in that way. I’m sure it’s great! If you don’t feel happy drawing, step away from it. But I encourage you to come back to it and keep trying if you want to ❤️
I'd recommend looking back at your old art, sometimes we don't notice our own improvement until we look back at how it used to be.
I always thought artfight was something else. This is more like art trading or aggressive art gifting. Still fun, but I feel like it needs a more descriptive title.
It sounds like a great way to practice your art. It can be less stressful to draw other people's characters, because it's already made all you need to do is draw it.

hey this is just a question i have!!
i really love the idea of artfight, and want to join but: i'm a completely new artist and am objectively bad at it, would it still be a good idea to join?
i have done art before but that was very simple and small drawings where i did not care if it looked good or not / didn't care about improving. so i do have some experience, but not much.
if it was just about drawing then i would of course go for it, but since it's about gifting / trading i feel like it's a different story. it feels unfair to give someone art that just isn't good and very simple, 'expecting' them to give something good back.
one big thing that gives me doubts is rule 7 of the upload rules, "art must display clear effort and cannot be over simplified." i just worry that even though i put effort into my art, it's so small and simple it might not look like it. i just don't want to offend or disappoint anyone.
i know, i know, "art is for fun" and "if you put your heart into it, they'll see the effort" but i don't know how much of that translates into real life lol.
i don't know the artfight culture and how people feel about receiving beginner art. thanks for any responses :)

@@fledge__heartinc yes! I've gotten art from befinner artists before and I've encouraged my beginner artist sibling to join too! Just go out there and have fun!! (I also only submitted 2 attacks in 2022 so yeah, no need to make more attacks than you want)

Nah it's not too late, art fight literally hasn't even started yet. You could join halfway through and do like 1 attack and it wouldn't be too late. I recommend not procrastinating until next year if you just want to try it!
I know it may sounds weird for an artist to say, but can you participate in the Art Fight and attack other users without adding your own characters? Funnily enough, currently I don't have any interesting characters or characters wich haven't appear in one of my primary social media and wich can be recognised by someone who knows me personally, and I don't want to risk my confidentiality. I just want to draw some random characters, practice my skills, make people happy and have some fun on my own :P

I’d suggest not to focus on how many attacks you get, but if you don’t know who to attack, people who don’t have many always seems really happy to get one, but really anyone is!
Before attacking someone, be aware of their permissions and boundaries, especially as a minor attacking an adult or vice versa. Some people don’t want people way older/younger than them interacting or attacking them in general or specific characters of theirs. Just be aware!
It’s a lot of fun, and I feel like it can be a pretty unique experience, I don’t see too many things like this on the internet unless they lurk in the shadows within social media sites. Honestly I think anyone considering should at least try it, and if you don’t have time or get burnt out, that’s okay, you don’t have to be on the entire time no matter what :)

When someone else attacks you! The "defense" on your profile is where you see all the attacks you've gotten

I don't think it does! I've seen people with actual animated shorts and webcomics participate in art fight with their ocs!

Yes you can! (You can also add one character multiple times if you drew it more than once in one attack)

Technically yes ☝🏻 you can just draw other people's ocs. But there's also a cool thing where some people will upload a "character" but it's actually a prompt for someone to design them a character instead. So then if you want others to design you characters instead of drawing ones you already have, that's possible :D
