Off road again, and this time it's serious, on a Triumph Tiger 800 XRx

  • I was browsing Google Maps and found an interesting track (Harling Drove) that ran for about 15 km or 9 miles. The track was pretty easy for a start but there were some very challenging areas further on. Thank goodness it was dry! See how I fared!

    A dogging spot 🐕🐕😂😂 I had to chuckle to myself when you said that.
    Bit of air out of the tyres would do wonder's, (a little electric pump run off the battery to see you back on to the black stuff).
    Good work!!

      Andrew South if I get the enthusiasm up to have another go, I might try that trick. What kind of pressures do you suggest?

      Having never done any off roading before, just a Snetterton track day (I dropped pressures to 15psi due to the track heating the tyres up quicker).
      Usually with off roading I am assuming you need to widen the footprint of the tyre so it spreads out more on the soft stuff? Bit of googling would probably come in handy 😉

    It was a small adventure just to watch. Slow and easy but you made it in one piece. With different tyres you'd do better I'm sure. Just bought myself a 2014 model with Karoo 3 on. Will soon try something similar. Tyres, speed and positioning on the bike is key when riding such roads. Ride safe! Cheers mate. 🍻😀

      Jon71 Lerum thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I have the standard Pirelli Scorpions on at the moment, I'd have liked to reduce the tyre pressures but I have no idea what I should reduce them to and I didn't have anything with me to pump them up again. I am definitely a work in progress!

    Well done there Tony, bravo! That looked exhausting. Sand is probably the worst. Hats off to you for braving it.

      Phil480 Thanks Phil, that road was far worse than I expected, I was expecting a bit of gravel, not the huge dips and sand. I'd set myself the objective, how could I bale out halfway through! I did enjoy it especially because I made it through unscathed!

      For any dirt bike, I'm sure it would have been a doddle. But to accomplish it as a novice on a big heavy Tiger with road tyres on is quite an achievement :)

    You're braver than I am! Perfect music to go with this. I thought you did great! And no cars to deal with. Ooo...deep sand...yikes! Beautiful with all those trees, though.

      WheelsNotHeels Thank you, I might not have another go anytime soon. Proper roads for me in the future, however ..........

    Nicely done, mate! You'll get the hang of it if you keep going. For what you covered, that is all I care to try with my Tiger. I rode dirt bikes when I was much younger, those bikes are so light and tourqy, quite a bit easier to handle. These big Tigers are meant for what you just did.
    BTW: one of the reasons dirt riding keeps you in shape, is the picking up of the bike over and over ;-)

      @OldManTony  7 років тому

      Arizona RE Luckily I didn't have to pick the bike up this time, just! I'm off the bike just at the moment because of a table saw accident, nothing too serious, I just can't quite get a glove on and pull in the clutch. Give it a couple of weeks and we'll see about another go.

    Offroad rides are fun.

    Nice one buddy, yep the old sand certainly drags the energy out of you, I try to avoid riding in sand for long periods of time now, well done mate another thing ticked off what you hadn't previously tried, RSM8.

    • @OldManTony
      @OldManTony  7 років тому

      Skeggy Cruiser exactly, now I can get back to roads! Well I can when my hand recovers, I've just had a circular saw finger interface issue, nothing drastic but I won't be able to get my gloves on for a while!

    • @SkeggyCruiser
      @SkeggyCruiser 7 років тому

      Bloody hell mate, hope things are going to be ok, take it easy for a bit, feet up time, lol.

    • @OldManTony
      @OldManTony  7 років тому

      Skeggy Cruiser yes, nothing became detached, a few stitches and wrapping etc and all is OK. The bandage looks like a bloody sock puppet and I have to keep it on for a couple of weeks, we'll see after that, but the plastic surgeon said 6-8 weeks recovery.

    1st one was bad enough. Then the sand. Hard to keep it upright on the sand sometimes. Good workout Tony. Satisfied now? LOL!

    That looks fun. Is that the traction control kicking in on the speedo? You get much grip on your road tyres?

    • @OldManTony
      @OldManTony  7 років тому

      It was, but knackering. When you put it in off road mode the TC light and the ABS light flash slowly as a reminder. I think the TC is off and the ABS is off on the front wheel. The grip is ok except for on the loose sand.

  • @CaptainCrankyMotovlogger
    @CaptainCrankyMotovlogger 7 років тому +1

    That was great mate - quite a testing track you found, in many variations. I thought the sand was gonna have you a couple of times, no wonder you were tired!
    So - enough to satisfy OR the beginning of a desire that will grow beyond your common sense and bodily ability? (I'm asking from experience, lol).

    • @OldManTony
      @OldManTony  7 років тому

      CaptainCranky I'm in two minds at the moment, I have satisfied my curiosity, but now I think I want to go back and try to do better. I'll see how I feel when my fingers heal and I can get a glove on and get back on the bike. Note to self though, don't have a go at 8pm on a Sunday, on my own, when I don't know if there is a mobile phone signal. The wife didn't really know where I had gone.

      I always found on sand, good set of knobblies, keep the power on and the front end light.

    • @OldManTony
      @OldManTony  7 років тому +1

      Rob 64 I think you're right, knobblies would have helped, and the other stuff. I was trying to stand up and get my weight back, but couldn't get going before the front was digging in, so it was feet back on the floor. I think I said in the video, more practice needed, ha ha!
