Nice Job... I never knew the lights were different colors lol... I just unpluged my glow plug wire and the glow plug indicator started working again....
What would cause the speedometer to read 10% too slow, as determined by a GPS app? The odometer also counts fewer miles than actually measured. The odometer was recently repaired (was not counting at all).
Yes. Top right. Slip it between the cluster and the dash carefully. Then turn it 90 degrees and pull. The hook will grab the back of the cluster and pull it out. If it does not move at first, just back off and try again. You might need to tug on it several times. The cluster engagement with the dash is a tight press fit. There is actually nothing holding it in there except the tight fit. My W210 is the same way. This is common practice for Mercedes.
So did you test the temp gauge to see if cleaning the contacts made it work right? I have a curbfinder mirror on the right side of my 2001 e320 and after the first time it worked when I test drove the car but quit after that. I happened to take the console plate off once and unplug everything to see if I could get at the window switches. After I put it all back together the mirror worked. So corroded contacts are the first thing to check when something electrical fails.
@@wernerdanler2742 The temp gauge is fixed now. It was corroded connections. Still an issue with one of the instrument panel lights though. Something's up with the circuit board I think.
@@ImpalamansGarage check the holder for the bulb for corrosion and also make sure the tangs make good contact with the board. I've had trouble with those on other apps on a Volvo.
The clock works but keeps terrible time. LMAO..... There is a clock in the radio so I'm not interested in trying to make it more accurate. I don't even wear a watch. Haven't for 30 years !!
@@ImpalamansGarage I removed my cluster and the clock wire slipped off and touched the metal back of the cluster. It fried the cluster and made it act erratically except for the speedo. Had to buy a new one
It's unfortunate so many of thee 70's and 80's MB's suffer from cluster leprosy: The strange appearance of little spots all over the damned place. My SEC does suffer from it, thank The Maker. I wonder if it can be cleaned or if it's just a done deal.
To be honest I didn't pay a lot of attention to the spots. Just wanted it to work correctly. I'm going to dive back into the engine compartment shortly. only reason I was doing interior stuff is because I was waiting on parts from Germany for the engine.
That's actually a fungus growing in there that eats the paint. It does in fact thrive on the moisture in certain parts of the US. If not dealt with it will get worse and eventually ruin the gauge faces. I know this because I am going to have to redo the gauge faces in an 86 420SEL

Cool stuff

Did you change the size of your wheels (ultimate tire diameter) without changing the speedometer gear in the transmission?
@@ImpalamansGarage I wish I had! That would have made this puzzle a lot less challenging... Still runs on 14" 205x70x14 Michelins
How did you get celsius in the outdoor temperature display on the dashboard? Is that screen replaced?
Came that way from the factory.
@@ImpalamansGarage But is there possibility the switch it to fahrenheit? or that case you have to change the whole temperature display assembly?
Yes. The small module can be swapped easily. There is a part number for a Fahrenheit one. Just not on my to-do list. lol
Thanks for showing this view. So, you used the wire tool to remove the cluster by starting on the top-right? Right? Thanks for clarification

@@ImpalamansGarage that didn't do it? Maybe you can find a salvaged gauge.

Please disconnect the battery before you remove the cluster. The power to the clock can fry the whole cluster
You're talking about the red wire on the right side I assume ? I was careful with it when I was back there. Good tip though !

I don't really understand what causes this - I have never seen a car in Europe that has this issue.
I think its moisture
