  • Come camp with us as we set our sites eastward towards the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Scenic Lakeshore. Michigan's upper peninsula is a non-stop vibe and we'll be taking it all in as we truck camp our way from the Porcupine Mountains to Pictured Rocks. We'll try our first MI pasty, attempt to cliff jump, walk out to a lighthouse, boondock at a boat ramp, and so much more.

    Mother of a type 1 diabetic, 16 years into the lifestyle. Moderation and keep in mind a carbohydrate is a carbohydrate, many people do not get that fact when it comes to diabetes. Good luck in your healthy journey, don’t restrict yourself to the point of feeling like your missing out, that didn’t work out so well in our situation. You just plan for those free days when your carb intake can be a slice of pie or a goodie you like. Free days are important for the mental health part of management of diabetes. Great video

It is absolutely manageable. Thank goodness my son has finally re-embraced his management after his teen years.

    The birds look like Pheasants.
    I was up in Copper Harbor at the time time you were up there. It was crazy to think that the smoke was coming from the fires in Canada.
    I've been admiring your single burner stove. How's that working out? I've often thought an ideal car camping stove would be one like a traditional camping stove (with the lid and windscreens) but cut in half. It's pretty rare I've ever needed both burners and it would still be nice to have the lid to keep the burner clean. The closest I've come to it so far is the Jetboil Genesis, but wholly crap is that thing expensive.
    The rear range light you saw in Munising is no longer being used. However, back in the day, if you were a sailor you would line up the front range and rear range lights so that they lined up and it would insure that you had a safe passage into the harbor. There's lots of shallow spots in that bay where Grand Island is.

      Ah, thanks for clarifying about the read range light! Good info.
      I’m really enjoying the single burner stove. Only slight issue is flame control with winds, but we don’t have an official wind screen. Could be easily remedied.

    As someone who's been vegan for five years, and a plant based diet being a large part of that ethical position, I'm excited to see your health journey with the WFPB!
    My partner has hypoglycemia, and she's found that her blood sugar is much more stable now than it was before we made the change.
    Great video as always, I've now added the UP to my list!
    (and as someone who lives in SoCal, 8 bucks for a vegan pasty didn't sound expensive to me... lol!)
    Oh, also, is that a Recycled Firefighter wallet? I recently replaced mine, but had it for years!

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  3 роки тому +2

      Nice! It's amazing how much better I feel and how much control I've gained over my blood sugar with WFPB. Plus I can once again eat fruits, beans, and oatmeal! How interesting that WFPB helps regulate both high and low blood sugar. I think that wallet is made of upcycled X-pac fabric from sailboats. Not entirely sure though.

      We do a sublingual B12 and incorporate seaweed into our diet for Iodine, etc.
      Yeahhh, the pasty was decent, but a lil dry if we are being honest with ourselves 😂

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  3 роки тому

      We take a sublingual B12. The doctor honestly has been kind of unhelpful and generic. They don't even take the time to ask what I'm doing to control my blood sugar. I just did a lot of reading and research and found some books that helped me realize that the keto diet wasn't going to end well long term and that a WFPB diet could help me continue to eat the fruits/beans that I love while also contributing to longevity. Michigan absolutely blew us away. Can't wait to visit again.

    Greetings fellow campers. My wife and I are considering downsizing from a spiffy Mercedes based 24 ft Winnebago (too big too much stuff we don't use) to a pop up truck camper for our little Sport Trac. We're very concerned about weight on the truck. Have you weighed your rig? We assume that most camping setups wind up being overweight and wondering how your truck handles the camper and gear you bring along. We're going to binge a bunch more of your travels this weekend. Thanks.

    You guys vegetarian? Ah - disregard - trying to deal with diabetes - I’m doing a low-carb diet to try to avoid the same…

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  3 роки тому +1

      Yup. I was diagnosed as type 1.5 about 6 months ago. I too started out trying a super low-carb keto diet and it definitely worked to bring my a1c down a bit. The problem was that my blood sugar would spike any time I had a small amount of carbs and it tended to plateau and not lower as quickly as it should. Long story short I was super insulin resistant thanks to all the fat I was eating. I ended up looking for an alternative and after about 3 months switched to the whole food plant based diet and it has been so much more effective for me. It's crazy. I'm taking under 1/2 the insulin I was and I can eat all the fruit I want. I eat oatmeal, beans, whole grains, basically all the things diabetics aren't "supposed" to eat and have never felt better or had better control of my blood sugar. When I was diagnosed my A1C was 12.7% and at my last check in it was 5.5%. (If you're interested, check out the books "How Not to Die" and "Mastering Diabetes", they were full of useful info.)

    • @justjonoutdoors
      @justjonoutdoors 3 роки тому +2

      I never went full keto, just very low carb. I’m well established in the 5% club, but I find myself cheating way too often, and every time I do, it seems to take longer to get back into proper balance. Life seems to keep getting in the way of the physical exercise I really need to include and helps me really crush the numbers. I’ve never gotten to the point of requiring drugs or insulin, but I was well on my way there before waking up and taking control… I will certainly check out those books - I don’t think there’s any way possible to have too much information about how your body functions and how to keep ourselves healthy!
