  • Since taking my family to watch a Charity Shield Game a couple of years ago between Buriram (Thailand) and Kelantan (Malaysia), they have wanted to go again. An opportunity arose when Songkhla was chosen as the venue for the annual King's Cup in Thailand. This video features the final, and also the hotel where we stayed the night.
    I always use Agoda when booking hotels and recommend them highly.
    We stayed here: www.agoda.com/...
    The Thailand national team stayed here during the competition: www.agoda.com/...
    The new hotel next door to where we stayed is here: www.agoda.com/...

    Hello, I really appreciated your long complete video of the game and your stay at the hotel. I had seen two very short clips on the 50th King’s Cup Facebook, but those did not tell the full story of the experience. As a long-term resident of Songkhla City, I enjoy seeing events like these from you, when I can’t get there myself and also I want to avoid the crowds at night.

    Was here in August for Songkla Marathon, not many hotel in Songkla compared with Hatyai, end up paying RM140 per room for just one person.Btw ur son support West Ham ?

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  3 дні тому +3

      That's right. Songkhla doesn't attract as many tourists as Hat Yai, and there are far fewer hotels. When there are big sporting events, like this one, the hotel rooms get booked very quickly.
      I've had to sit my son down and explain to him why he has to support West Ham! In the UK, people can't choose. It depends where you grow up. I grew up within walking distance of the Boleyn Ground, and both of my parents' families lived in the same area. There was only one club I could ever support. Sometimes, it feels like a curse, but it's in my blood (and my son's blood - even though he's half Thai)!

      @@expatlivinginthailand West Ham not doing well this season with new Spanish manager.. correct me if am wrong, noticed for most British football is like a religion.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  3 дні тому +1

      @bk1571 I believe it's the first time West Ham have lost their first three home games. There was an improvement against Ipswich, but newly-promoted Ipswich are one of the weakest teams in the division. Lots of new players, and lots for the manager to figure out. Paqueta still has this betting charge hanging over his head. I'm hoping it will get better from now on.
      As Billy Shankly said.
      "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”
      It is like a religion for many people!

    Football! I've been hearing it called soccer more than usual lately.. so I've been peeved more than usual lately! I like watching it.. although I've never watched it live & frankly don't intend to - can't see things clearly from too far away with my poor eyesight 😒 But I totally get the atmosphere of live matches.. basketball for me during my student days.
    And now a question I've been saving for the 'next opportunity' (i.e. this video 🤭). I've been told before that ปุ้มปุ้ย means fat, although maybe this is informal cos my translator app & some UA-cam shorts have it as อ้วน. I've also been asked when ordering pork leg rice if I was ok with ปุ้มปุ้ย.. so my question is, does ปุ้มปุ้ย / อ้วน refer to both physically and dietary fat? I was trying to come up with the Thai translation for nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk) and came up with ข้าวปุ้มปุ้ย, but I don't know if this makes sense. Lemak means dietary fat, but there is a totally separate word for physically fat (gemuk). To call the dish nasi gemuk is grammatically wrong, and I was wondering how it is in the Thai language 🤔
    Sorry for going off-topic! 😅

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  3 дні тому +3

      I played cricket and basketball at school. I was never a great football player! Soccer is one of those unfortunate American words. The yanks have their own sport, which they call football, and they needed a different word for real football.
      Your language question instantly takes me back around 30 years! As a tourist to Thailand in the early 90's, I spoke not a word of Thai, and I associated with Thai girls of low standing (if you know what I mean). The girls would describe fat farang tourists as ปุ้มปุ้ย and even though I didn't understand any Thai, I got the gist. When I described a fat farang walking past as ปุ้มปุ้ย, I got a cheap laugh. Incidentally, back then I was very skinny. I don't know what the origin of this phrase is and, interestingly, I have never heard it once here after 21 years. I only ever heard it as a tourist. However, while out shopping, I have noticed a brand of canned fish called ปุ้มปุ้ย and it makes me laugh.
      What I came to realise is that Thai bar girls have their own language. When a man was seen flitting from girl to girl, the bar girls would use the English word 'butterfly' to describe him. That is another word I have never heard while living here. The word that is used by Thais I know for people who demonstrate this behaviour is เจ้าชู้. This is another example of bar girls using vocabulary that regular Thais don't use.
      There's a dish here called ข้าวมันไก่, which is chicken on top of rice that is cooked with the fat from a chicken. มัน is like a greasy substance, although the word used for grease to lubricate cars and machines is จาระบี. อ้วน is the adjective for a fat person. Another word is อวบอ้วน or just อวบ for someone who is plump, rather than fat. The excess fat that I now have on my belly is ไขมัน. Oil is น้ำมัน
      I have never been asked about ปุ้มปุ้ย in a restaurant. Where was the restaurant, and was the person asking the question a bar girl or ex bar girl? As you dive deeper into Thai, it gets more confusing. Some single words have multiple meanings, and some things can be described using several different words. There are regional variations, differences with formal and informal vocabulary, and slang terms. I've heard some heavy people (unkindly) referred to as ช้างน้ำ - water elephant - walrus
      Coconut milk is กะทิ so coconut milk rice would be ข้าวกะทิ
      Are you now even more confused?! I am!

    • @visitstomyneighbours
      @visitstomyneighbours 3 дні тому +1

      @@expatlivinginthailand 😂😂 So.. not ข้าวปุ้มปุ้ย then 🤣
      Thanks for the detailed answer! Lots of 'learn new vocab' lessons in there, plus it's interesting.. I enjoy learning new stuff just for the heck of it 😅 If I ever come across one of those ปุ้มปุ้ย canned fish, I'm getting one as a souvenir.
      I was asked whether I'm ok with ปุ้มปุ้ย on my ข้าวขาหมู at Odean! At the food court on the 4th (5th?) floor.. the ข้าวขาหมู stall operated by the mother-daughter team. I was asked by the daughter.. no idea whether any previous occupation played a role in that question 🤭
      There is yet another word specifically for coconut milk - santan. Yet rice cooked in santan doesn't make it nasi santan, but nasi lemak (fatty rice?) instead. Gotta love the confusion 😁

      @@visitstomyneighbours Unfortunately, my brain can only handle two languages at most - 1.5 is probably more accurate.
