Undergoing the "rice experience" at the Living Land Farm in Luang Prabang, Laos, was highly rewarding. They take you through each MANUAL stage of rice cultivation from planting seedlings in a rice paddy to harvesting, threshing and milling. After threshing (loosening the edible grain from the rice straw), you're supposed to fling the remaining rice straw sheaf into the air in a graceful fashion. I got there in the end...sort of.
