I'm going through the top 20 Favorite Video Game Songs of all time as voted on by my community. This came in at number 9!
Well... Here it is.
I have had an interesting relationship with this song over the years to say the least. It was requested so often that it made me looking for songs from suggestions in the comments useless. Though I love Undertale and it's music, this one song was almost so overwhelming I just couldn't even know where to begin with covering it as it's own project. There was just way too much expection to feel comfortable taking it on. This Top 20 project felt like the perfect opportunity to finally put the wait to rest and I very much hope you guys enjoy it.
It's so hard to know where to go with something like this. I went in very conflicted because I had no idea how to go about it that wasn't already done. It felt like a disservice going with any one thing, so I decided to mix elements of Synthwave, Djent, and Orchestra into one to really capture the magnitude of this chaotic song. I really tried to put it's memehood aside and tackle it from the most organic place I could, really trying to capture elements of the guitar tone used in the Earthbound Overdriven guitar sound that Toby used so prominently. It was tough because it's so fizzy and trebly that every iteration felt too tinny and harsh that I ended up reaching for the Neural Archetype Petrucci and making a tone from scratch, and then scrapping it for my regular lead tone and making broad adjustments to it. The result is a pretty cooked tone, but one that sit suprisingly well in the mix with my brand new Axe FX rhythm tone utilizing an EVH modeled amp. For once I actually found myself trying to fill out the mix rather than cutting room for other instruments. I even got to play with boosting mids on the rhythm tone during the break section before the solo.
And of course, how could I do this without paying homage to the most viewed video across all of my channels. That doorbell deserves a deep cleaning after how many times I've programmed it to play this. It felt like the perfect drop instrument, so forgive probably the final feature of it playing this god foresaken song.
I really want to iterate how difficult it was to release this. Actually producing it was a breeze since I've been playing this song constantly since it came out, but to finally do it's own video and release it to the world is something else entirely. It's hard to explain, but I hope the feelings reach you.
I sincerely hope you enjoy this project of a cover 8 years in the making.

Fun fact that fucking doorbell video is actually how I discovered Jules. It showed up in my feed completely unexplained and then after I watched it UA-cam started bombarding me with everything he's ever done.

What I love about Jules' covers the most is the creative integration of original parts onto the song. These are unexpected and make the covers way more memorable and fresh compared to other, similar works from others.The small sample from Last Goodbye in this one is simply incredible.

Listening to your cover, I realized something- what I like about this cover is how CLEAN your notes are! Very little bleed from one note to the next, making your interpretation of the tune clear and very strong! Love it!

this is so good! i don't enjoy most metal covers this much and i'm not a music person so i couldn't put my finger on exactly why but suffice it to say you've made a real gem in the genre here. the incorporation of 'hopes and dreams' near the end there was such a nice detail, and the doorbell was such a sweet personal touch! i'm so glad you chose to incorporate that, a little show of how much the song means to you (as it does to so many of us)!

This is the first "metal" version that hits EVERY note. Every grace note, the quick little bits in the main melody that people tend to skip or only play half of.

Honestly really appreciate how in the description he explains he put the memes aside and tried to approach it as organically as possible. I genuinely love Megalovania as a song, and hate how it became such a massive meme, as it has ruined the song for some people. Seeing people treat it with proper respect is refreshing.
