Pimax 5k works great in iRacing on a RTX card and up with SPS enabled. I have a 3090 and can run mostly high settings and 1.25% SS Large FOV and love it.
SPS? What refresh rate do you use? The max I’m guessing?
Not sure if firmware has been worked on since launch but I just read max FOV comes at the cost of FPS.. Still 160hz @ 150Fov is killer
@@ApolloVIIIYouAreGoForTLI Yeah it does. Usually running normal FOV is fine. I actually run with SPS (Single Pass Stereo) OFF these days but have to turn it on for some races on some tracks due to performance hit. The sim looks better in VR with it off but nice to have for performance reasons. I don't event notice large vs normal FOV unless i look to the extreme edge. I run it at 90fps the higher limits like 120 etc have a smaller screen from what I have seen with the pitool drivers. Hopefully this helps.
Hehehe funny intro!🔦😁
Nice review mate, the peripheral distortions was the reason I backed away from this headset.
Yeah it just does something odd to the experience. I havnt used an index but all the vives I've owned and the oculueses I've used have always felt far more real and consistant.
No everyone percieve distortions, it depends of your face form and distance-angle to the lenses. I myself have no problem with distorions and find the headset amazing
11:00 can’t you adjust the in game FOV to compensate for the extra VR FOV?
Also you’ve said ACC takes a hit vs your vive setup what refresh rate were you on with the pm5k? 160hz is 2x the cpu/gpu if your vive maxes out at 90
Hello! Tell me please. I recently purchased pumax 5k plus . When watching any video, especially in a virtual desktop, round lens flares are visible on a black background. In a color picture, they are almost invisible, but on a black background they really interfere. It's like a fog effect. Is this normal? I have a pimax 4k there is no such problem.
I also had the snowflakes. Their initial batch of cables were faulty and they sent me a new refined cable and have never had the issue since.
Also you want Hidden Area Mask ON most of the time. The reason you were getting a weird images was more likely the Parallel Projections Setting.
Unchecking Hidden area mask causes the Pimax to render parts of the screen that aren't visible in the headset wasting performance.
Also not all games support unchecking PP but if you can get away with disabling it for a game it nets a huge performance increase. But it's not supported in all games.
Thanks for sharing. Wonderful clarity.
I also have Pimax 5K+ and the snowy issue you have is dew to the cable. I had the same issue and replacing it solved the issue.
Cool thanks, ive had a few ppl tell me that's the problem, which I suspected was the case. Were did you get your replacement?
@@JimVR In my case I got a replacement from Pimax (first year warrenty), but it is as bad now as yours. The newer cables they produced should be better then the ones we got.
lets test the new Pimax Vision 5K Super now :)
I am going to build a new PC with RTX 3080 and Ryzen 9 so I want to know which Pimax Headset should I look for the Pimax 8K X or Pimax 5K Plus? I heard 5K Plus have better refresh rate than 8K X so I am little bit confuse.
I can only comment on the 5k plus as per my observations in this review, I 've not tried the 8k headsets. Sweviver is probably the channel to look at for indepth info. I can tell you that the 5k is certainly a capable headset, but your usage experience might differ from mine, its fairly subjective with this device
I would go with Pimax's 5K Plus/XR, because you'll have a 62.5% higher refresh rate over the 8K X, and the lower resolution will reducee latency by providing higher fps (frames per second)
@@lethalflash3263 Not easy to get one Pimax and I heard the customer service is really bad so already Preordered HP Reverb G2 and Quest 2 both
How was the screendoor affect compared to the Vive Pro? I'm curious because I have a Vive Pro and Iike the jump between it and the original Vive. I've read that the Pimax 5k has a lower PPI but has subpixals to make it look better.
I found the screendoor much less visible with the pimax compared to the vive pro, however it does produce chromatic aberration towards the edges which I didn't mention in the review.
hi! the snow flakes thing is due to the cable. You can contact them for a new cable, and the snow flakes will be gone!
Thanks for this video. I'm in a similar situation; have the Vive Pro and while I'm happy with it I do wish for better FOV. I've been curious about the 5K+, but I think I'll stay on the fence a bit longer.
I'd recommend that, but if you get the chance to try one out give it a go as your experience might differ. Personally the vive still delivers a better experience
Is 200 Degrees Diagonal. You assumed it was horizontal
I got my information from some pretty extensive fov testing that was done by MRTV, you can watch it here ua-cam.com/video/9dzW3t6NVmw/v-deo.html. I guess it's possible that they are referring to diagonal, but I stand by my comment that 200 degs is wishfull marketing, because it makes no sence to measure fov diagonally, and without clarification on their part its clear they intend the user to believe it applies to the horizontal. They may have changed their marketing now, but that wasn't stated when I made this.
So I just found some updated marketing and it is stated that the 200 degrees is diagnol. Thanks for the update
Is there any way to make the distortion appear less? Can you alter the fov and get a narrower view. Wouldnt that help?
Yeah I used to do it ingame with AC & would have a different FOV for each car… Seems like a logical option to test but
check out sweviver for the new pimax experience. It's much better than steamvr now. I just tried it today.
Tbh the whole distortion thing is more of a "UA-camr reviewer" issue than it is in real life. It's way overexaggerated. I can't even put on a occulus or vive because they look like tunneled toy gimmicks compared to a pimax/index headset.
I have the first-gen 5k+ and it still beats the competition: 120hz, high fov, mouse support (new UI), high res destroys any other headset. I've even done school work in it for multiple hours.
How can anyone use a vive pro/vive these days? The most screen door out of any headset.. the worst experience and worst controllers.
Tempted at all to switch from the Vive Pro go the G2 when it's released Jim?
I'd love to give the G2 a go, its a much higher resolution than the Vive. Unfortunately these things are expensive so its gotta be a real departure from what I'm using before I can justify chucking money at it. The G2 does look good though
Maybe you should compare it with a Quest 2. Quest 2 is seriously cheaply made with a ton of distortion on the two sides and the images get so blurred. Quest 2 is advertised to have 100 degrees of field of view when in fact it can't get more than 90 degrees most of the time. Quest 2 is also extremely narrow and uncomfortable. I suppose you get what you pay for.
you sound just like the Digital Foundry bloke. Great review btw. Highly underrated channel
How do you not know its off center?
What do you mean? If you're talking about what you see in the video footage, it won't appear centered as it's taken from the left eye's video feed, it's perfectly center in the headset because both right and left perspectives are combined
Had a Pimax 5k+ too, never seen these sprinkly flashing pixels.
As I understand it a bunch of them went out with dodgy cables that cause interference. I got one of those unfortunately
@@iStrong113 I've been considering an Index too. The fov on the pimax is pretty compelling but there's something odd with the way it feels. Distortion is a subjective thing and I think everyone experiences it differently, so I'm looking for something that's got the solid visual offering of the vive but with a bit wider fov, and the index seems to fit that bill. I need to to a bit more research myself before I buy. As for pimax's customer support, I couldn't tell you as I've never tried to use it. They were very quick to respond to questions during the Kickstarter and I'd hope that they'd still be quick now. I will try and get a replacement sent out for my dodgy unit and find out. They are making remarkable improvements especially with people like sweviver working for them, but I think the experience with their hardware is still to variable.
If the cable is a problem. There are existing now optical DisplayPort cables! Take a look to Amazon.
Try electric contact cleaner I use it on the video cable for the vive pro cleans it up. The one from the box to the pc
I only use the pimax for sim racing, which means I don't need those bloody awful base stations, inside out tracking works great and it's bliss using VR without the base stations.
Nice Gameplay 👌 VR👍
Ok review but i think 99% would highly disagree on the screen door sweet spot and lens quality. For those afraid of side distortion/fish eye you get used to that pretty quick and i never really notice it in mine.
Much needed comment!! Traded my valve index for a 5K super hopefully I’ll like it!
They just need to make enough money to hire a lens specialist company to make a lens for them for the extra wide FOV.
Great vid. This was the NeoGeo of headsets for me, but the lack of solid software puts me off. The quicker and easier route into putting a headset on and starting a game the better for me.
I had the same problem with the flashy snow/stars. Its caused by the cable, I ordered a new one and now it works fine. Enjoy! (cutting to black is also caused by the cable)
