Bouncing a baby or toddler, swinging, or spinning, will not cause SBS. This is a very VIOLENT shaking.
I get tired of seeing moms and dads playing with their children online and people love to comment how they'll give them shaken baby syndrome. That is NOT what it is.

@@kimbro8741 the brain cannot flip. It can bounce around. But the baby has to be shaken rather violently. Bouncing a baby around doesn’t cause brain damage. If that happened then babies would get brain damage from riding over really rough roads or even bumpy sidewalks in a carriage.

So, a few years ago, New Zealand put through legislation to recognise and protect children from assault. It was coined by a lot of people as the "Anti smacking" law. People were rebelling against the idea that you couldn't hit your kid and not get locked up for it because we all got hit, and we turned out okay. But the more you looked at the law, the more you realised that children didn't have the same rights as adults, and committing assault against a child should be viewed as the same with assault against an adult.

I think it’s a step in the right direction but the research still demonstrates that corporal punishment does NOT harm children at all UNLESS the parent(s) are otherwise unloving or cold. I’d also think potentially arresting and separating a parent from their child because they smacked their kid’s behind once or twice would do MORE damage to the child than if they were to stay with a parent that was still loving and warm with them. While yes, there are much better ways of correcting misbehavior, to put child abuse and the occasional spanking on the same level is ludicrous.
Edit: I should clarify that degrees of corporal punishment interact synergistically with parent-dyad relations and parent-child dimensions of warmth, hostility, etc so when you examine the research, you should be questioning any potential confounding variables and accommodating a more nuanced portrait of physical discipline. Parental warmth and closeness are protective against corporal punishment at LOW and MODERATE levels but HIGH levels of corporal punishment are on par with physical abuse and thus, converge to create similar psychological outcomes. I think we can all agree that this means of controlling an unruly child is far from ideal but if we’re going to legislate parenting practices, we should always take context into account. It need not be said that isolating a child from a non-abusive, caring parent would have severe repercussions beyond reasonable corporal punishment.

Right! Same experience working at a nurse. But also, I have 7 kids including a set of twins and let me tell ya it was chaos at times esp w busy toddlers and an infant and trying to keep
Them all properly bathed, fed, loved, entertained, clothed etc. only ONCE did we have a bathtub accident. 3 year old and sitting infant in tub. 3 year old went to “slide” down side of garden tub and slipped. I instinctively reached for her and the baby so he wouldn’t go under and she wouldn’t crack her skull! Daughter did hit her mouth and had tooth trauma but it never came out until years later thank goodness. All was fine and I knew it could have been worse. Toddlers are unpredictable and having many kids close in age reminds me not to judge many things. But supervision and proper caregiving means that these tragic accidents that do occur, sadly, are few and far between. These abusers are the vulnerable children’s worst nightmare and are completely pathetic morons to everyone else!

I think a lot of people see these stories and it messes with their perception. They see people claiming all these things happened in the bath and then it turns out that's not what happened at all so when it comes to actually leaving a toddler in the bath, they don't realize that yes, bad things can happen in the 60 seconds it takes them to go answer the phone or the 90 seconds it takes to see who's at the door. When I was growing up, we had one bathroom and it was tiny. Tub/shower on one side (exactly like the one shown in this video near the end) and a toilet, sink and cabinet with hamper in the bottom (common in the old 50s built houses in our neighborhood) on the other side. My mom was bathing my brother when he was almost 2 (so squirrely as hell) and she stood up and half turned to get the towel out of the cabinet behind her. She didn't take a step or move away from the tub (there wasn't even room to do that) and it couldn't have been more than 2 seconds. In that 2 seconds my brother decided he was going to get out of the tub himself and when he did, he slipped, fell and bit the tip of his tongue off. My mom snatched him up and took him to the hospital but it bled like hell. My sister and I walked home from school back then- me 12 and her 10- and came home to what looked like a horror scene. Blood all over the bathroom. Luckily mom had stopped long enough to leave a note or we would have really freaked. But many folks don't realize just how quick something can happen, how fast it can go from normal to oh-no.

I take EMS/hospital employees for granted far too often. Hearing that this sheriff was first to arrive and immediately started doing CPR on a child asap along with all the other EMS out in the world who spend their days genuinely trying to save as many lives as possible is something I fail to think about and appreciate far too little. The idea that there are individuals who care about saving lives more than the child’s own parents is chilling

FYI, statistics show the risk of child abuse rises DRAMATICALLY when a mother brings a man who isn’t the biological father to live in the house. It absolutely infuriates me how people take such chances with their children. There is nothing wrong with dating as a single mother but for God’s sake don’t let a brand new boyfriend watch your baby. I will never understand the mindset of people who do these kinds of things to helpless children - and there are absolutely no excuses. The crocodile tears Jesse cried while saying “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to” just further made my blood boil.
I know kids are a pain in the ass. They can be loud, unreasonable, and overly-demanding. I’ve babysat my two nephews since they were both infants - and they can be _hell_ to look after. However, even as a person who has issues dealing with stress and my temper (which was, coincidentally, caused by being abused as a child), I have never gotten the urge to inflict any kind of harm these two kids I look after. If my stress and anger get too much to handle while they’re in my care, I sit back, drown out the noise, and give myself a Time-Out for a few minutes.
(And I gotta say - the scariest age when you’re looking after them is when they’re less than 12 months old. Not only do they just feel so delicate when in your arms - I have nightmares of checking on a sleeping baby to find him dead in his crib from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).)

I really don't understand how someone can see a small, defenseless child who doesn't yet know how to control their emotions and decide "I'm going to hit them to punish them for acting out." Seems utterly backwards to me. It only teaches that child that you resolve anger with violence. It teaches them nothing in the ways of managing their emotions, it only conditions them to be afraid of your reactions and prompts them to shut down any emotions that illicit a violent response from you when in your presence. I just wonder how much less violent the world would be if children were properly taught how to manage themselves instead of pushing everything down. Keep in mind, I was spanked and I STILL think it's wrong. It's not bad to have grown up in that environment with parents who thought like that and change your mind about the subject when new research has determined corporal punishment does more harm than good.

The amount of bruising found by the pediatrician and the coroner already suggests Brandon was subject to a history of violence. We can only assume it was Jessy. However, my spider-sense is telling me that the video game that Jessy was playing led to Brandon's unfortunate final tragedy. Brandon somehow disturbed or interrupted Jessy's focus on his gaming and he messed up, this caused him to completely lose it on Brandon! That day, the resulting level of violence went much further than it had at any time before...

Or neglectful due to laziness etc. I don't think most of them get such a thrill from abusing babies to try to revive them to do it more.... (Absolutely there are some psychos out there, but I think so least 75% are just anger issues types or disgusting lazy slobs)... Anyway what I'm getting at is that I think most of the time they go into damage control mode like they didn't expect that this time would be the time that the abuse would cause death. They would have been getting away with angry outbursts or neglect for months or years at this point. They know ultimately that they'll be in huge trouble if the kid dies so they have to at least act like they want them to be saved to give themselves at least a little bit of benefit of the doubt in court.
