Confusing if you are a frustrated clematis grower as am I. I read to NOT use manure. This gentleman says bone meal is "useless as far as I'm concerned" but then applies a bone meal mixture. I've used bone meal successfully on most every plant. I might be mistaken, but I am disappointed that he didn't emphasize the use of organic compounds. I found the process of dropping the original pot, filling up around it, and then removing to create the optimal hole very helpful.
Patrick Stults Hi Patrick, this video was done couple of years ago and I’m still learning tho the plant has done exceptionally well. I’m certainly leaning as I go and I believe being an amateur and leaning New things is the most exciting part of gardening. In this video i stress these main points; “clematis like full sun however the roots must be keep cool” hence the terracotta pot. I agree with the manure bit and if you watch my new videos I don’t use that in container anymore. But I believe well rotted manure is technically a compost and it’s safe if we mix with other ingredients such as peat moss or coco coir. Also the use of a slow release fertiliser is recommended by Raymond Evison who is a clematis expert. Anyway I still got the same plant flowering for me in the very same container, so it turned out to be a success. But if I am to pot it up I would definitely be using worm castings, Mycorrhizal Fungi etc. I certainly use bone meal and what I said was I find it pointless to use as a top dress but better to be in contact with the roots. Thanks for watching.
They should do well, mine is in full flower again this year. Remember to mulch them , they need to be in full sun but their roots needs to be kept cool.
Forgot to meantion that this year for the first time it bloomed 2 times....someone told me to take the dead leaves and branches off and fertilize and water it and it is still has blooms on it. I live in California
Vivian Albano Some can be pruned to soil line as explained in the video. Certain groups flier twice. In California you should plant it in shade and let the vine grow towards sun.
I couldn’t take my eyes off those gorgeous purple flowers at 5:50. What are they? Good information, especially about the fertilizers and not to tease the roots. I’m going to be planting clematis in the ground in zone 6b Canada for the first time this year. We can grow them in terracotta pots here too, but need to bring them to a basement or garage away from the winter snow, when they plant goes dormant. Ceramic pots, stone pots or whiskey barrels are also an option here. But definitely not plastic pots. Which planting zone are you from?
After the clematis is planted with your special ingredients how often should it be fertilized thru the growing season and with what? After the initial potting do I ever have to repot? Won't the initial ingredients deteriorate thru the years?
Hello there, thank you for watching . Yes as with every potted plants they will need to be repot every 3 years to a bigger pot . If you are growing them in 5 gallon then I would say up pot to a 10g. If that's not possible you can prune 1/3 of their roots with a saw in fall and use fresh soil mix to refill. I use a Loam/soil based compost and it holds more nutrients . If you plant them on pure compost then it might get dry quickly and will affect the flower quality .This year the same plants in the video has bloomed again . I only use osmocote slow release fertiliser in spring and water regularly. Remember the key is to keep their roots cool away from direct sun , however the foliage itself needs full sun. Thanks
pekoe46 hello, Do you live in the UK? I got mine from home base, but if you are from the united states then I think potting soil is similar, probably more loam based. Try kellogs potting mix, it dosent have to be miracle grow. Thanks VInny
pekoe46 just found these www.homedepot.com/p/Miracle-Gro-8-qt-Organic-Choice-Potting-Mix-72978650/100557738 www.lowes.com/pd_380154-446-72983510_0__?productId=3652642
no, live in the USA Found the potting mix, Miracle Grow. However, the stuff you show in the bag is nothing like the stuff in the bag I have. Yours is grey-looking and seems fluffy, like peat. Mine is more soil-like - dark balk and heavy like soil. It's NOT garden soil it's potting mix. that's why I asked what you had, because it doesn't look like mine at all........
Good video, I have a clametis but not sure of the group it's in. We have been cutting down to about a foot late fall and has been coming back strong. My clematis has very large flowers I hear for being in group 3, is this true?
Hello sorry for replying late. Clematis in group 3 can be cut down as they flower in current seasons growth . I usually cut them to a strong bud just in case that they don't die back. After you see multiple shoots from the soil you can cut the previous years growth completely . Usually large flowers are in group 2. If you know the name of the variety I can help to find out. Thanks
Hello, it's better to mix gravel with the compost rather than putting at the bottom as it will take root growing space. Yes you can do it but it's very old fashioned method, and it's not highly recommended now . Just put some bark around the drain hole to stop compost from leaching out.
not from UK. in the USA, found the potting mix. however, YOURS, that you show in this video, is much fluffier, if you will, almost like a peat. the potting mix gottenat Lowe's - Miracle Grow - looks and feels more like actual soil. very dark black, nothing like the lighter color and lightness of what you pick up and crumble in your hand. just looks and feels completely different.
You could get that and mix it with 25% perlite. if you notice I have mixed a soil based compost aswell(we call it john innes compost over here) . Also put some normal fertiliser plus slow release fertiliser . I have an update of this clematis aswell . It's in full flower now.
any idea why clematis won't grow in plastic pots?? they're obviously growing in the plastic pots they're in at the nurseries that sell them. why wouldn't they continue to grow in a larger one?
Hi, nurseries and garden centres are not like home growers as they get much better fertilisers, compost etc and they also have fantastic growing areas where they can keep plants in optimum conditions, where as we have to fight with bugs, use less chemicals. If you read about clematis on Raymond Evisions website, he clearly explains everything about this plant. The black pots in nurseries are only temporary, clematis love sun, but we must keep their root system cool, plastic pots get dried up easily in summer. By all means if you invest in a drip irrigation, then of course you can grow them in plastic pots, but otherwise the flower quality will be not so great and remember they need to store energy for next years growth after dormancy aswell. I hope this helps. Take care and let me know how your clematis are doing. Vinny
is it normal for clematis to bloom a different color and change to its adult color later? I have a clematis young and it bloomed pale pink but is suppose to have purple flowers
Hello - Thanks for your Video. I am in the USA, you are in the UK. I will be planting my (5) Clematis plants this Spring - 3 of them will be planted in Stone Urns, and 2 of them will be planted in the ground. We can not obtain John Innes compost here in the USA, so what do you recommend ? I can get MiracleGro Potting Soil. Where do you obtain Fish, Blood and Bone Meal? I just purchased regular Bone Meal. I will be using Stones on top of the soil to keep the soil cool, I will not be using Mulch. I don't know where to find Horse manure either here in the USA. The Mycorrhizial fungai is available via mail order thru Amazon.com. Thanks again for your video, and wish me Luck - PATRICK
If the miracle grow potting soil is a soil based compost then it should be fine, or you could just buy top soil and compost separately and mix then 50:50. Bone meal should be ok. They need good sunlight but their roots should be kept cool. You don't need manure just use any organic compost.
+Sussex Gardening I have already purchased the Potting Soil, so I am just going to use that. Compost is not yet available for Sale here - it is to early and won't be available for Sale until Spring.
Loving this, especially putting the pot inside final position, brilliant Thankyou
Your potted flowers look very beautiful and full of color!
