1. Life is missery (expect to be dissapointed, manage your expectations and be greatful for the nice, sweet and amusing things) 2. Metta Bavana (kind thoughts, kind impulses regarding others. Start with someone you hate and than extrapolate to all people). Compassion is a learnable skill 3. Guanyin (mercy, compassion, kindness) 4. Wu Wei (not making an effort, going with the flow, but not laziness). To be wise is to have learnt how one must sometimes surrender to the whole universe. Realize when our wishes are in conflict with reality. The perspective about the events matters a lot 5. Bamboo as wisdom (be adaptable, like the bamboo) 6. Kintsugi (we're all flawed and that's ok)
I live off a fixed income of $750/month but I'm grateful for what I have; an apartment through Section 8, another chance at sobriety, my cat, that I still have enough teeth left to be able to chew, I have $ for food and my basic needs are met to name a few. The simple things..
One of my favorite Ancient Chinese sayings, very roughly and personally translated: "When heaven is about to assign important responsibility to anyone, it will start by making him suffer from frustration, depression, physical exhaustion, hunger, bad fortunes, overall making him grid through crippling mental and physical agony in every aspect of his life. Doing so as a way to prepare him with the iron resilience to take on the impossible task." The way I see it: life will inevitably go south and sh!t will hit the fan, instead of crying about it, put a more positive and productive spin on it. See the events as an opportunities to train yourself to be more resilience. This kinda mentality has helped me so much coping life. Ex: I was job searching 2 years ago and went through anger, frustration, depression for about 5 months with companies giving me false promises, embarrassments, and confusions. What I learned was that: reality will throw stones at you, don't get emotional about it, get proactive to handle it. Then after a while, things might get even worse, but if you keep pushing yourself forward, you might actually reach wherever you want to go.
A more accurate and less extreme translation is #1 "All life contains the causes of dissatisfaction ". #2 "The causes of dissatisfaction can be known" . #3 "A path leading to the elimination of the causes of dissatisfaction exists". #4 "The 8 fold path is the path leading to the ceasation of the causes of dissatisfaction ".
Got any recommendations in terms of translator? I've read this one [ www.amazon.de/gp/product/1484090748/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ] and it felt rather modern, but it got the message across.
The Tao Te Ching is amazing. I read the version by Stephen Mitchell, highly recommend to anyone who wants to read it. This video honestly does not do Eastern Philosophy justice.
Give the guy a break. Nothing but negativity. He's taken on the gargantuan task of trying to elucidate some, not all Eastern philosophy concepts. Of course he's left pieces out. He's done a fine job considering and the aim is to give viewers something positive to take away, not cover everything in great detail.
Kintsugi and Zen are largely about how things are only the way they are from a certain perspective. The vase is only broken if you're looking at it as an ex-vase instead of a potential vase. Even if you never fix it, each piece of broken vase is a perfectly intact jagged piece of plaster. It's only a broken vase if you cling to the idea that a vase ever existed outside of your idea of it.
It would be nice if you did a series on Eastern Philosophers like you have for Western Philosophy. I would love to see this... and then maybe even some philosophy from more modern thinkers, perhaps even some female philosophers since I know historically it is a male dominated field.
For years I've been waiting for your take on Islamic Philosophy. The title of this video sparked a bit of hope, but I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.
Oddly, the term broke in the west means no money to spend. A contrast of moral mental stamina from the east. Loa Tzu, even in his time was venturing away from all the chaos in his village, if I remember correctly was directed at the current emperor. He was kind enough(if not threatened) to jot down his exemplary fashions of life, and was only recently discovered in the 90s if im not mistaken. Great video!
You could also include the essence of Indian philosophy called advitha vadantha (the principle of non duality )propagated by great sages like Adi Sankara and Sri Ramana Maharshi.(his teaching explained in famous book “who am I”)
Wu Wei has helped me with mindfulness. It helps keep the ego quiet so I do not try to "act on" what is happening and instead simply be the observer. Very useful in business.
Unfortunately no. 1 and it's interpretation is just wrong due to bad translation. Buddha never said that as a general thing about life, but to his excessively ascetic first disciples. Moreover, the claim is that the unenlightened life is full of suffering. This subtle difference is important because the narrators interpretation against expectation and that good would be a "bonus" is not to be found in Buddhism [there is no bonus but consequences of cause and effect + the bliss of realizing uncaused nature of reality/mind]. As to suffering as a mark of existence (one of the 3 including impermanance and not-self), a better translation is unsatisfactoriness or sense of lack, to which suffering is an unskillful *response*.
Think you for clarifying that...it just sounded so Puritan IE Salem witch trials , Or Baptist. If you watched Salem (TV series) you got a pretty good idea
+Arata Senpai I think it's because the translation reads, life is suffering. There's an awful lot about Buddhism which is misunderstood and for a large part of it, you really need to sit down and ask yourself these questions to see what you find out. Don't take his word for it, check it out!
The historical applications of Eastern philosophy are wildly interesting. The Chinese revolution of the 1949 and the following Great Leap Forward between '59 to '61 under Chairman Mao was meant to instill a sense active engagement and empowerment into Chinese peasants. The philosophy of Daoism and wu wei systematically engendered into the peasant population an acceptance of warlord exploitation for hundreds of years. While economically and materially Chairman Mao's contributions remain controversial, culturally, the Chairman instilled a voracious empowerment in the peasants of population who pushed back against the philosophy that had shackled them for hundreds of years.
Some of these philosophies helped me accept being forever alone. Funny thing is I came to the same conclusions before knowing they’ve already existed for millennia
I don't think there would be a difference between Western or eastern philosophy if everyone could just stop the hate and start showing kindness and acceptance as human beings. That's the only foundation we lack. I think what makes all the differences is cultures that gets mixed in with philosophy or "religion"
Horry Oh so true. Religion (i.e. "cults") are the foundation of so many problems in this world. The sad thing is is that there will never be peace as long as that divides us.
I find more conflicting the dualism of being religious against being less religious or being religiousless or even anti religious. I always admire someone who is strict to the code he has chosen for himself regardless of which cultural path it comes from as long as it's a peaceful and honorable code.
Is Buddhism & Tao philosophies are only a eastern philosophies? What about Hindu/Jain/Sikh or other philosophies in India and are they don't have any philosophical ideas?
The video is not claiming to be a synopsis of all eastern philosophy, but 6 individual ideas that they thought were particularly applicable and could fit in a short video.
BigHenFor I am not expert but have read little history, lot of 20th century US and European philosophers have influenced from Upanishads for example Emerson, Carl Jung, Voltaire.. also lot of Sri Buddha's philosophy were extensions of Upanishads. As Dr Santosh suggested we have no problem if title was 6 philosophical idea of Buddhist or from China it would have been OK. But creator used title Eastern Philosophical ideas and not mentioned any India philosophical ideas is not justice to the title.
Hahaha, sorry for my horrible english... I really talk about philosophy. Here in Brazil is really dificult to have a carreer based in doing philosophy. I want to preserve a philosophical culture despite the government don't want this. So, a UA-cam channel can serve to this cause.
latin america is part of the western philosophy. What is your point exactly? Besides, you speak in portuguese in your videos. How are others supposed to understand? Sorry.
I’m not trying to point to my own background but seriously this should be Western philosophy vrs Chinese and Indian philosophy cause you can’t say eastern without mentioning the Persian and Arabic philosophers... but it’s ok I still love you Mr. Alain ❤️😄
South America has had a tradition of shamans, but not a modern (historic) form of philosophy. Don't expect TSOL to make a video on shamanic aboriginal cultures. Middle east, on the other hand, that could be a good TSOL video.

Mettā is the new meta. If only. Also, it has the ā for a reason because it's pronounced mettah instead of the quick 'meta' and the 't' sound is quite soft.
Thanks for the nice little Buddhism ballyhoo, however take a look at what these generous monks and devout servants of Buddha doing in Rakhaine, Myanmar
A bit hypocritical when you yourself come from a misunderstood religion where everyone misunderstanding it, associates it with violence. I myself totally respect Islam, but I'm confused that people still make comments like this when we say time and time again that the actions of a few are not the fault of the religion.
Saif Rahman Do you really think that they are true followers of Buddha? I mean, what would Jesus think if he looked at Christianity? He might just want to clean house again. Buddha would be dismayed. The conflict between Buddhists and Muslims is a turf war. Oh well, our faulty walnuts tend to lead us astray.
But why should one show compassion for those who we are tempted to dismiss and detest? Would it be worth the energy? I'm not sure if you made the case for why that idea is worth considering.

Wow, I particularly love the "Kintsugi" idea. Something about "repair" is so touching and beautiful.
" The secret to happiness is low expectations "

buddhism... taoism... all leads to gnosis
thanks
I've read the Tao Te Ching, and I was enamoured by it-- very enlightening!
Tom Boerstra , stay smiling☺
I am happy you found it meaningful. Now i recommend you read a different translation. The Tao is one book that requires a few passes to grok.
And you, friend!
I've always loved Eastern philosophy. I love Western philosophy too but there is something that seems a bit more elegant about Eastern philosophy.
Kevin Byrne agree!
Thank you, auto-subtitles - now I will forever hear Lao Tzu as "Loud Sue"...
Kintsugi and Zen are largely about how things are only the way they are from a certain perspective. The vase is only broken if you're looking at it as an ex-vase instead of a potential vase. Life cannot be fully actualized without philosophy
Does eastern philosophy include Indian subcontinent or not?
Looking forward to videos on Persian/Arab philosophers: Rumi, Averroes, Avicena, Ghazali etc
I've learned much from this channel that I wouldn't have otherwise. Many thanks. 🙏
have a good day everyone (:
a syrian smiles while walking down his neighbourhood without caring for the missiles exploding gracefully only meters away from him.....
Thanks! Now go fuck yourself :)
Theodorul you 2!
One of my favorite parts of the day is your uploads. :)
Good morning everyone. Thank you for this vid. Awesome caricature and Alain de Button voice is heartwarming.
These are great ideas. Now how do I not forget them a couple hours after I watch this
It would be nice if you did a series on Eastern Philosophers like you have for Western Philosophy. I would love to see this... and then maybe even some philosophy from more modern thinkers, perhaps even some female philosophers since I know historically it is a male dominated field.
It is highly worthy to point Molana Rumi, Khayyam and Attar, in this regard too.
This is the best channel to listen to before bed
Wu Wei is similar to stoicism in ancient greek and roman philosophy
Good morning. Time for The School of Life.
The only school I enjoy going to.
Same.
For years I've been waiting for your take on Islamic Philosophy. The title of this video sparked a bit of hope, but I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.
We'll get there!
Amazing! Thanks for your response.
There are lots of Eastern Philosophies from other eastern countries. Will like to see them too :)
1:32 that's Budai, not Buddha.
This channel is honestly amazing you inspired to do the things I am doing on my channel now I love watching your stuff
could have included some of the philosophies from Jainism, Hinduism, Sikhism as well. Informative video through.
Thank you so much brother! 🕉
Eastern Philosophies tend to focus on humbleness.. while western philosophies concern what we are.
The Bamboo and glue is my favorite.
I have been waiting for this one for a looooonnnngggg time, thanks school of life!
Nice, insightful and new ideas for me! Thank you for the video! Keep it up with similar and of course different content :)
Can you do Indian philosophers like Patanjali's yogasutras and Adi Shankara ?
Need a full comprehensive video of Western nihlism/stoicism and eastern buddhism and others, would be interesting
Oddly, the term broke in the west means no money to spend. A contrast of moral mental stamina from the east. Beautiful!
This was awesome thank you 🙏👌
Make a video on orthodox and unorthodox schools of Hindu philosophy too.
many philosophers thought is omitted in the eastern part, though its a beautiful learning method in
short, thanks to uploder.
Hey can you do a series about Middle-Easter philosophy?
You could also include the essence of Indian philosophy called advitha vadantha (the principle of non duality )propagated by great sages like Adi Sankara and Sri Ramana Maharshi.(his teaching explained in famous book “who am I”)
Wu Wei has helped me with mindfulness. It helps keep the ego quiet so I do not try to "act on" what is happening and instead simply be the observer. Very useful in business.
Eastern philosophies without including Santana dharam ? What about Vedanta, sankhya, mimamsa, nyaya, Jainism, yoga ?
Are you confusing Buddha with Budai?
sadly it's just more wood for the fire of confusing Budai and Lord Buddha...Can't tell you how often I see misinterpretations ;-;
this channel is beyond all great words thank you for all the people who emrich with these information
I would love a video about zen!
Thank you!
Unfortunately no. 1 and it's interpretation is just wrong due to bad translation.

Thank you. I like this video a lot.
Holy crap almost nothing from India? Land of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, the Vedas, Yoga, nothing? Ouch.
I think this is an awesome video, thank you
Some of these philosophies helped me accept being forever alone. Funny thing is I came to the same conclusions before knowing they’ve already existed for millennia
What do you mean by east? Where is India???????
One episode will not be enough to know eastern philosophy..
Horry Just pick even one instance of the problems dividing people and explain how resolve those issues. Let's start with veganism to keep it simple. 😂
I find more conflicting the dualism of being religious against being less religious or being religiousless or even anti religious.
I always admire someone who is strict to the code he has chosen for himself regardless of which cultural path it comes from as long as it's a peaceful and honorable code.
You must have added the philosophy of rumi .
Is Buddhism & Tao philosophies are only a eastern philosophies? What about Hindu/Jain/Sikh or other philosophies in India and are they don't have any philosophical ideas?
Dinamani Gopala Krishna These philosophies have not gained traction in the West. I wish an expert in these would provide some insights.
The video is not claiming to be a synopsis of all eastern philosophy, but 6 individual ideas that they thought were particularly applicable and could fit in a short video.
Exactly I was thinking the same...
Zachary Margrave Yes but then why mention 6 ideas from eastern philosophy... Should have said 6 ideas from Buddhism...
BigHenFor I am not expert but have read little history, lot of 20th century US and European philosophers have influenced from Upanishads for example Emerson, Carl Jung, Voltaire.. also lot of Sri Buddha's philosophy were extensions of Upanishads. I think it’s best to use unsatisfactoriness in place of misery in the first point, I read somewhere that this is how it translates best :)
This is really cool! More! (and yeah bring latin-american, african and all sorts of philosophy along!)
How about latin-america philosophy? Here in my channel I talk about philosophy for portuguese speakers... Some videos has english subtitles.
Why pretend tho?
Hahaha, sorry for my horrible english... I really talk about philosophy. Here in Brazil is really dificult to have a carreer based in doing philosophy. I want to preserve a philosophical culture despite the government don't want this. So, a UA-cam channel can serve to this cause.
+Alysson Augusto cool man
latin america is part of the western philosophy. What is your point exactly? Besides, you speak in portuguese in your videos. How are others supposed to understand? Sorry.
Alysson Augusto no its really cool, keep up the good work, cheers from indonesia 🍻
Is this feels like for being early
Yeah my fav is the wabi sabi
Thanks,,,great! you can also add yin and yang and wabi sabi!
This one was great!
Cheerful despair. Hahahaa , I love it!
Well guess who will now be studying Eastern Philosophy? Me!
Similarities are there for comparison but one is original and the other is a inspired one😁
He misinterpreted "life is suffering"
Yeah, accurate translation from original Vedic texts would be "suffering exists".
hannasdfjkl Can you explain this to me, please?
Mindful Ale www.thoughtco.com/life-is-suffering-what-does-that-mean-450094 and www.buddhanet.net/cbp1_f6.htm
The Vedas are Hindu texts. The Buddha's noble truths are part of a completely different set of scriptures.
Vishal
true but in Buddhism they are still known as the 4 Nobel truths.
Eastern tradition surprising me once again!
That was lovely
very great animation
Outstanding
Make a video on vedas and bhagvat geeta
As much as I like Tho School of Life, this video contains massive oversimplifications that really don't make justice of the topic.
is there any episode talks about nomads philosophy?
Thanks a lot for all your work and effort to share such amazing ideas!!! 感謝
I’m not trying to point to my own background but seriously this should be Western philosophy vrs Chinese and Indian philosophy cause you can’t say eastern without mentioning the Persian and Arabic philosophers... but it’s ok I still love you Mr. Alain ❤️😄
You have done one in eastern and western, i would love to se one in south american and one from the middle east
South America has had a tradition of shamans, but not a modern (historic) form of philosophy. Don't expect TSOL to make a video on shamanic aboriginal cultures.
Middle east, on the other hand, that could be a good TSOL video.
1, Life is suffering, bingo!
2, Be nice and kind to the people around you, working on progress!
3, Mercy and compassion, bingo!
4, Going with flow, yes; passive living style, hard!
5, resistance, always!
6, recognizes your flaws, yes!
You mean 6 ideas from far-Eastern philosophy? No mention of Indian philosophy here.
Buddhism is.
Beautiful
Ive been on a very eastern vibe lately and this is just icing on the cake!
Excellent...
The first noble truth in Buddhism is "life is awry or Dukkha"
"the existence is imperfect. There's always something going wrong or unsatisfying among all happened"
"Today we are young, 20 years old, fresh and strong, pretty or handsome, but 15 years later, something is going on with our body, not as beauty as 15 years ago, not as strong as 15 years ago. We need to do something to nurture our freshness or healthy."
"Today is a sunny day, and I and friends are having appointment tomorrow we will hangout somewhere, but at the next day it is impromptu or out of sudden the heavy rain fall when we were about to hangout, what we need to do is wait until the rain stop."
That what Buddhist follower must comprehend about life, to let them understand that it is natural phenomena, and let Buddhist understand how useless and unworthy to be despaired for any circumstances or situation that they are deal with. Instead of angry, Lord want us to face all problem nicely and wisely, not rebel on it or cry, not violently or gloomy mood.
Mettā is the new meta. If only. Also, it has the ā for a reason because it's pronounced mettah instead of the quick 'meta' and the 't' sound is quite soft.
East Asian philosophy is the best !
Sloth is under rated
Am I the only one who is earring👂🏼 a white noise
Love it
But as I understood it the Buddha said "All life is suffering" in response to the idea that all life should be in the pursuit of pleasure thus trading one absurd extreme for another thereby creating a "Middle way"

Kentsugi is beautiful
It is to my understanding that Buddha said pain is part of life yet suffering is a choice. Suffering is dwelling on the pain that will certainly be part of the ebb and flow of life. There is no need to focus on the pain and hence suffering is a choice and a bad one at that. Choice of mind is certainty "The Way"
Jess Yates Pain is invetaible, suffering is optional - Gautama Buddha
Excellent. You are best when you make videos of Philosophers or Authors. Stick to those two subjects and you won't go far wrong.
But nowadays, especially in Chinese as seem doesn’t live by the eastern philosophies and rather be the ignorance in the consumerism lifestyle without thinking.....😑
