Shadow fits way better as a creepypasta monster. He's an 'ultimate life form' created by a scientist wanting to create an immortal being in collaboration with evil aliens. He possesses a near equal level of ability to Sonic and is the complete antithesis to everything Sonic stands and fights for. Sonic would also have trouble outrunning Shadow without outside interference because they're nearly the same speed.
What make this better that if shadow was a failed project, he could end like this, what ironically, EGGMAN HIMSELF WAS GUARDING THAT SO IT DONT ESCAPE, but guess what? Sonic let it be free. And so the end was near.
Heres my theory of the story: Shadow was either possessed by a demon while in containment or has fully embraced his Black Doom side out of anger for the death of Maria. Eggman found Shadow but realized how dangerous he was and tried to keep him imprisoned only for Sonic to free him.
"Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Revelation, known as Sonic Plus in development, was supposed to appear on the Genesis in the summer of 1995. It would have marked the first appearance of Shadow and rail grinding. Also, the Drop Dash from the Sonic 3 beta was supposed to be implemented. However, an entity somehow took control of the cartridge, and one of the prototype testers, who I will call Å, was possessed by the glitch. Whoever got close to the testing room he was in was also possessed. Strange behaviors happened with the possessed people. They had a desire to tear their friends and family to shreds, and somehow got into locked cars and drove on sidewalks. When a member called Sega about this, everyone stopped being possessed. The cartridge was burned to ashes. Sega laughed it off, and a few innocent people were accused and thrown in jail for murder. Å was traumatized for a week. This cartridge is actually data found in the ashes and recreated by Å. Shadow and rail grinding was remembered by Å when SOAP striked a deal with Sega for Sonic Adventure 2, and the Drop Dash was brought back in Sonic Mania. Å is currently dead. It will lift Sonic to the button at the mini-cave on the right side. Push it. Then, in the next zone, break the lightning shield at the begging of this level (don't lose it, because it protects Sonic from yellow fire) and find a way to grey (at least that I remember this colour) ring. I forgot the name of this level. Just like a level design... That's all, that I remember...

Honestly though if they plan on doing that, they probably need to implement some randomization on the second or third playthroughs, akin to the' (coronation day)
