Gotta say that I disagree with nearly every criticism Mike made of Possessor. I thought it did a great job of "Show, don't tell." I always like when Mike and Jay disagree during a video, though. Keeps it fresh.
@@skeletalsounds_ I agree that feels like the right interpretation. For me it's just very difficult to build sympathy or interest in Vos from the outset because she is already so far gone. I mean she just brutally stabbed a dude she didn't know in the neck. I didn't feel the tragedy of her going full psychopath because I never felt much conflict from her where she is straining to be any different.
I love how stubborn Mike is when he disagrees with Jay. I'd like to think that there are times Mike realizes he's wrong but decides to keep dying on that hill in a secret genius move to show everyone how right Jay is. Because I almost always end up thinking Jay was right.
Echoing these sentiments wholeheartedly But as I said in other comments, there is no specific necessity to have to identify with a character. That is a crutch imo. If you look for the silver lining and happy ending in everything, you detach yourself from reality Some of the best films I’ve ever seen end in “mindless violence”. Why? Because they illustrate a point, a kind of Aesop’s fable if you will. Possessor very much deals with cognitive dissonance and detachment, something highly prevalent especially nowadays. I feel the Mine where Tate works is a great allegory to the cycle of fruitless endeavors we go through everyday, still hoping for a sliver of hope in the end. When the question is brought up that Tate may be in control instead of Vos, that causes all actions we initially thought Vos used in her ruse into question. It makes us question just how we were supposed to perceive Tate. Should we feel sorry for him? Should we hate him? Should we understand him? No. He’s no different than you and I. To ascribe some sort of heroism or demonry to him takes us out of reality. I feel keeping all characters ambiguous works perfectly with the movies’ symbolism. This movie made me look at myself and think, “Wow, no one’s a hero.” And that worked. It made me question why I would automatically try to fit each character into one side of the spectrum or another. Begin pre-judging them. Ultimately, there’s no point.
I feel like mike gives leeway to bad concepts for good execution, but no leeway visa versa, and Jay will give more leeway to the execution if it has a good concept
I see these titles, and I just keep thinking about how Douglas Adams advertised his book _Mostly Harmless,_ "The fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Trilogy!"
Yeah but this video is much better with respect to its series than the depressing, uninspired and dull stack of papers that was _Mostly Harmless._ Sad that the fantastic author could not complete book 6.
@@feebypeels2883 yeah full power to you if you like it, lol. But I always felt it was a bit aimless and out of sorts compared to the first 4... I know that's how the series is, but Mostly Harmless in particular seemed like being dark and glib for the sake of it, while the original four did have their charm and depth. I think Adams himself later said that he would like to write a sixth book and a happier ending.

Anyone else notice Mike's predilection for touching the back of his ear while explaining something that exites him, and now you can't un-notice it in any RLM video?
Maybe he started doing that after seeing "A Touch Of Magic : For Cats And Kittens" to try de-aging himself, as well as whatever else that crackpot claimed it could do.
I wholly expect it to end in an interview on Ellen a la Joker. “You think that horrible movies full of rape and violence are funny?” “I do... and I’m tired of pretending they’re not.”

The things about Anna Taylor Joy that stand out to you are probably her really good acting skills and her tiny face paired with gigantic eyes that are about a mile apart. For the record, I'm not saying they're bad, it's just that she has a very distinct look that makes you pay attention.
It's interesting because I never thought she was bad looking or anything, but the more and more things I see her in, the more and more attracted I get to her. She doesn't have the typical "pretty" look, but damn is she gorgeous. She's also a phenomenal actress and I love watching her perform.
Thank you for the laughs. I got a real good chuckle when you suggested Kauffman would ever think to up the age of the woman were PSH still alive to take the role.
I loved possessor uncut. The story was in weather she really had control or did the people she was possessing were carrying out their own fantasies of murdering their nemesis
A good comparison to Possessor might be Drive, they're both movies about characters who are inherently violent, and both movies have some pretty graphic scenes. But Drive shocks you briefly with the violence and then lets the reactions of the characters strengthen the impact of the violence rather than the imagery itself. In almost every scene where the Driver kills someone, it is immediately followed up by the Driver's reflection of what he has just done or a horrified reaction by someone he cares about. It features graphic violence but avoids celebrating it by showing the immediate consequences it has on the Driver's goals in life (to live a normal life with the girl)
I'm Thinking of Ending Things had a Visceral effect on me...I loved it soooo much. It just hits, man. (all the casting was on purpose from films the janitor had seen, like Toni, the Hereditary mom. and Jesse, and the kinda "unknown" starring girl. Perfect.
The "excessive gore" In Possessor thematically has a place in the movie. Jay even mentioned it earlier. How she is becoming more and more desensitized to violence.
I've got to say how much I appreciate the large and lengthy spoiler warning pause you guys throw in. I'm going to watch the movie, then come back and finish this review. As always.
The impression I got with Possessor was that the assassin essentially likes her job, and it has become her life. She seems to take pride in it, and her handler remarks that the two of them have "worked hard" to get her where she is. But it is so different from the "real" world that she can't really inhabit it anymore. Mike says he wants to see her "spiralling down"; she asks for time off, gets it, but immediately realises she just wants to go back in. Plus, at some point (or maybe always) she began to enjoy the act of killing. I don't think she cares about the money. I get the impression she barely spends it, a sort of Leon type situation.
While I haven't seen it, I feel like Mike's problem with Possessor sounds like a total lack of likeable characters. I often find (for me personally, anyway) that no amount of style, substance, or plot can make me interested in a movie if I can't find at least one character to like.
The '(Part X of 2)' portion of this series' title is just so perfectly emblematic of this pandemic. For anyone reading this in the future, we all did honestly think a two-parter was a reasonable expectation when 'Part 1 of 2' came out.
Yes, 4:3 is just perfect for small, meaningful films like Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Jesse Plemmons to star in Rich Evans biopic
very cool
Jesse Plemmons as Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Chris Evans as Jay Bauman
Rich Evans as Mike Stoklasa
Ryan Gosling as Rich Evans
Gotta say that I disagree with nearly every criticism Mike made of Possessor. I thought it did a great job of "Show, don't tell." I always like when Mike and Jay disagree during a video, though. Keeps it fresh.
And I find myself always in agreement with Jay!
Echoing these sentiments wholeheartedly
But as I said in other comments, there is no specific necessity to have to identify with a character. That is a crutch imo. If you look for the silver lining and happy ending in everything, you detach yourself from reality
Some of the best films I’ve ever seen end in “mindless violence”.
This movie made me look at myself and think, “Wow, no one’s a hero.”
And that worked. It made me question why I would automatically try to fit each character into one side of the spectrum or another. Begin pre-judging them.
Ultimately, there’s no point.
@@RandyHawkeye “realises he’s wrong” it’s his opinion, he’s kind of the voice for the general audience in this respect
Thank you for suggesting “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” It was great.
“I just spent the last 5 years in therapy to get over my bloodlust” makes for a great clip
I feel like mike gives leeway to bad concepts for good execution, but no leeway visa versa, and Jay will give more leeway to the execution if it has a good concept
Mike seems to enjoy films on their visceral elements, how pleasurable the simple act of watching the is. Jay seems like more of a concept guy.
@@BinaryRex18 I quite enjoyed Mostly Harmless.
@OfficialSmuglyFrog oh, cheers, I didn't know that. I didn't really like the Artemis Fowl books but maybe this could be worth a shot.
@@BinaryRex18 Personally, I thought Colfer's installment read like wonky fan fiction, which was a shame because I felt like I was one of the few supporters of his book when it was announced. However, no need to take my word for it because I really liked Mostly Harmless. So if you do check it out, I hope you enjoy it as much as I didn't!

Im amazed they dident pick up on that, especially Jay
I'm curious if these cutaway hallucinations are setting up a new RLMCU storyline

I love that Mike refers to Rashida Jones as Ann Perkins
I have never received an ad read from Red Letter Media and I respect that.
Looking forward to your Mandalorian season 2 review. Nice to have some good new Star Wars in my life.

While I haven't seen it, I feel like Mike's problem with Possessor sounds like a total lack of likeable characters. I often find (for me personally, anyway) that no amount of style, substance, or plot can make me interested in a movie if I can't find at least one character to like.
Mike just didn't "get it" I guess.. even though it was pretty much hitting you over the head with it
Possessed just sounds like a rough draft of the original puppet master in the Ghost in the Shell
Omg, you're right!
