Gula Apong (Palm Sugar) Production In Kampung Semilang Beliong Sarawak Malaysia 砂拉越吻龙的尼帕棕榈糖/亚答糖制作

    Often times this product has been confused with or mistaken for gula melaka due to their similar appearances. Similar in looks but miles apart in tastes. Once tasted, visitors to Sarawak will never forget its unique and unmistakable fragrance. Most Sarawak Malay cakes like onde onde, cincin and jala, just to name a few, are made with this nipah palm sugar. Even the popular Melanau kueh tumpik has to be eaten with gula apong. Ice kacang/cendol would be disappointing without this traditional Sarawak ingredient. Perhaps, the biggest catalyst in recent times in Kuching that has caused quite a buzz in the market is the ice cream gula apong.
    Coincidentally, as we were recently touring Kampung Semilang in Beliong on our bicycles, we were informed by a local called Khalik that there were two huts by the road side that were producing this palm sugar. We had never been so lucky. The last four visits here we had no idea where the production was going on although we knew it had to be somewhere nearby.
    We easily found the two quaint looking huts right opposite each other just outside the main road to Semilang. The humble atap huts were owned by two brothers Salleh and Anon. Both knew exactly what we came here for as they obligingly demonstrated and explained all the processes involved with gula apong production. Both places struck me as very traditional or rather primitive. Honestly, too primitive to be able to meet the eventual demand of the city folks. Sarawak is blessed indeed with so much coastal land covered by nipah forest. God given. No further agricultural efforts necessary. Coastal villagers just need to go out there to tap its sap.
    Perhaps the ‘Invention and Deign Assocaition of Sarawak’ or IDEAS could step in to help upgrade the processing methods by organizing an innovation competition for local universities like Mara, Unimas and Swinburne students. The future for gula apong is too bright to ignore.
    Sering kali produk ini dikelirukan atau disalah anggap sebagai gula melaka kerana penampilannya yang serupa. Sama rupa tetapi berjauhan dalam citarasa. Setelah dirasakan, pengunjung ke Sarawak tidak akan pernah melupakan wangiannya yang unik dan tidak ketara. Sebilangan besar kuih-muih Melayu Sarawak seperti onde onde, cincin dan jala... dibuat dengan gula apong ini. Malah kueh tumpik Melanau yang terkenal mesti dimakan dengan gula apong. Es Kacang / cendol akan mengecewakan tanpa ramuan tradisional Sarawak ini. Mungkin, pemangkin terbesar di Kuching sejak kebelakangan ini yang menyebabkan kegemparan di pasaran adalah gula apong ais krim.
    Secara kebetulan, ketika kami baru-baru ini berkeliling di Kampung Semilang di Beliong dengan basikal, kami diberitahu oleh orang tempatan bernama Khalik bahawa terdapat dua pondok di tepi jalan yang menghasilkan gula apong ini. Empat lawatan terakhir di sini kami tidak tahu di mana pengeluarannya berlangsung walaupun kami tahu ia mesti berada di tempat yang berdekatan.
    Kami dengan mudah menjumpai dua pondok yang kelihatan pelik tepat di seberang jalan utama ke Semilang. Pondok atap dimiliki oleh dua saudara lelaki Mohd. Salleh dan Anon. Kedua-duanya tahu dengan tepat apa yang kami sampai di sini kerana mereka menunjukkan dan menjelaskan semua proses yang terlibat dengan pengeluaran gula apong. Kedua-dua tempat ini sangat tradisional atau agak primitif. Sarawak memang diberkati dengan begitu banyak tanah pesisir yang diliputi oleh hutan nipah. Tuhan yang diberikan. Tidak perlu usaha pertanian lagi. Penduduk kampung pesisir hanya perlu pergi ke sana untuk mengetuk jusnya.
