i bought a jewellery box from this company shown in the video February Mountain. it is absolutely STUNNING, the video doesnt capture its beauty completely. the way it shines in the light is worth every penny
The part which impressed me the most, was the precision of this artisan. That tiny butterfly. How did he do that with that machine, without cutting himself? It’s extraordinary. Yes, I realize that this man probably has decades of experience but, it doesn’t mean it’s not amazing each time. Truly beautiful. ❤️
The trick with this kind of work is not to cut yourself into a corner. As a marquetry maker using similar techniques, I always cut clockwise around a shape, which means you have to cut a design from left to right or the whole pack becomes unstable. If you look closely at him cutting you'll see what I mean...The uncut part is always to his right.
What a beautiful job they do, I finally know how they made the beautiful jewelry box that has accompanied me for the last 25 years, this jewelry box was a gift that my husband gave me from Busan, I appreciate it so much that the jewelry box itself has become my most precious jewel. Thank you for creating wonders that last forever
Absolutely stunning craftsmanship! Such steady hands, I always thought they were cut by laser, never knew someone physically worked the shapes by hand. Seashells are one of my favorite items, the colors remind me of my favorite gemstone, the Opal. Like holding a piece of the aurora sky in one's hand. ✨
abalone shells-- they are found in the depths of the ocean (this part is edited for those who replied-- found at 150 ft. ; 200 ft is where light dwindles) and thus, considered more precious and valuable whose flesh is found in dishes in the royal courts of Korea; the lacquer boxes with abalone mother of pearl are a traditional art over thousands of yrs.

@Carol you’re absolutely right. I grew up with old jagae jang so I didn’t know how valuable they were until my mom’s rich friend bought a set of custom made furnitures for her new house. She spent around 20k dollars and that was 30 years ago.

Oh my, another artistic master piece from beginning to end. Exquisite attention to detail and polished lacquered finish at its finest. Things I can only dream about.
Amazing!! I always assumed a machine just automatically cuts out shapes but they handcut everything by hand themselves. Makes me appreciate my Korean mother of pearl boxes even more🔥
I saw the prices online in your store. Honestly, you should sell these for at least 5x as much as you're asking. They're crazy beautiful and your craftsmanship is worth the cost. Well done.
No wonder the jewelry box is so pretty. It's meticulously and wonderfully made! Look at those gorgeous details and designs. It's incredible! And the color of the shells give an ethereal and elegant look to the box. I would definitely love to have one of these.

When i was around 10 (i am 44 now) here in Greece there was living next to us a Korean family. I loved that family they were very precious to me. The father of the little girls had the same artwork here in Greece, made fantastic boxes and furnitures. I still have my jewelery box. Unfortunately when they left Athens, they neves mail us back, so i lost track with that family. If anyone knows them, let me know. I only remember the names of the little girls: Hannah and Miyong and their mothers name Peh. I miss them everyday. They were adorable. ♥️♥️ They must be around 30 now….
What a heartwarming story. Sounds like they were immigrants. Having a good neighbor might lighten thieir hardness of starting new life in foreign land. I hope you guys meet again some day. Oh and, 1. Peh(배) is might be her family name. While Hannah(한나, or Hana하나?) and Miyong(미용, but that's weird name... I bet it's actually Miyeong미영) is thier first name. 2. Wife keep her own family name even after marriage. So the girls last name is might not be Peh 3. Family name comes first, and first name comes next. 4. For 2 and 3 : while living in foreign country, some people change those rules to avoid awkward situations and fit in to new customs. So... those information can be wrong 🤔 Hope these little info helps you find the family.

They're WONDERFUL!! I love the way that little family has made a small factory out of it, and really turn them out. Enchanting!!
I am very curious how they make those shell sheets, they're so thin and delicate, they almost look like stickers at the end which is amazing!
A video showing that process was linked at the end - "Process of Making Beautiful Decoration with Seashells. Korean Mother-of-pearl Factory"
I wondered the same thing.. How did the original block get made? I'll check out that link at the end for sure
@@Talamasca007 ah, I must have missed it looking for the link to purchase! Thank you! 💛
Me too!
@@Talamasca007 I thought for sure it must be artificial nacre just because of how regular it was. I was surprised to find it was real mother of pearl.
My all time favorite traditional Korean crafts! Beautiful!!!
My mom had a jewelry box that her brother brought back from Korea in the 70's. This is some awesome work, my hands wouldn't be steady enough to do this.👍
Wow. I bought a box in Insadong before leaving Korea a few months ago, and the sales lady told me it was made with mother-of-pearl. I didn't even consider how the box was so intricately decorated - such amazing, beautiful work!
Just out of curiosity, how much do these sell for? I hope he's getting paid well...
@@LaughingInTiny I honestly don’t remember. Maybe somewhere between 15,000 to 25,000 KRW? Could have been more. I bought it in a souvenir shop in Insadong.
@@LaughingInTiny FYI 15,000 ~ 25000 won is roughly 17 ~ 27 in USD
@@kentpaper958 Wooow... so not nearly enough then. Although the issue REALLY is that we are so used to things being inexpensive now that artisans simply aren't getting paid properly. I hope we can shift that mentality.
@Carol you’re absolutely right. I grew up with old jagae jang so I didn’t know how valuable they were until my mom’s rich friend bought a set of custom made furnitures for her new house. She spent around 20k dollars and that was 30 years ago.

Precious and beautiful. An ideal glory box for passing on from mother to daughter.
Wow, it's always a pleasure to watch a professional at work
So elegant and so precious! When i travel to Korea I hope to buy couple of them, one for my family and one myself. Absolutely fantastic
06:30 : Look at all this colours, how shiny, how beautiful
07:00 : Wiping away my tears because of watching something so beautiful and precious, for the first time ever in my many years in this world.
Bless you.
My goodness, this work is amazing! Detailed and gorgeous, what excellent craftsmanship- I want to buy one!!
Incredible, such breathtaking skill and craftsmanship.
When I was a little girl my cousin had one of the jewelry boxes that looked like a miniature piece of furniture and I have always wanted one. After watching this I want one even more! Beautiful, awesome work! ❤
Beatiful Korean traditional craft.. truly an amazing art work
Absolutely gorgeous works of art. Definitely something worth keeping for generations. 💕
Absolutely beautiful. The exquisitely designed and cut inlay in subtle rainbow hues makes such a stunning contrast on the black background.
so much experience and effort needed to craft these traditional style jewelry boxes. i remember my grandparents having similar ones. i hope this artform never dies. beautiful work!
As a VERY happy owner of several of these boxes, purchased while stationed with US Army n S. Korea, I am thrilled to have seen how they are made. Thank You!
Beautifully made video. Incredibly, breathtaking craftsmanship. I've never thought about how the insides of the butterfly wings are in a different color than the outline. The attention to detail is just spectacular. Thank you for sharing!
I was gifted such a jewelry box when I resigned from my English teaching position in South Korea. It's one of my most treasured gifts to date 🥰
Absolutely EXCELLENT beautiful
Juluary Box ,making with seashell
Wonderful hand making Possession
Very Nice .

Oh my, another artistic master piece from beginning to end. Exquisite attention to detail and polished lacquered finish at its finest. Things I can only dream about.
Amazing!! I always assumed a machine just automatically cuts out shapes but they handcut everything by hand themselves. Makes me appreciate my Korean mother of pearl boxes even more🔥
I have always loved this type of art, but now after watching this video I respect the makers even more for their craft and dedication to beauty.
I saw the prices online in your store. Honestly, you should sell these for at least 5x as much as you're asking. They're crazy beautiful and your craftsmanship is worth the cost. Well done.
it doesn't work like that. If you overprice you end up selling less and making less profit.
Where can i find it, me and my daughter fell in love with this boxes.
@@peggy_universe it's under the video in the description, you can order from their website.
No wonder the jewelry box is so pretty. It's meticulously and wonderfully made! Look at those gorgeous details and designs. It's incredible! And the color of the shells give an ethereal and elegant look to the box. I would definitely love to have one of these.
Thank you for sharing your incredible workmanship! I was so impressed, I ordered one for myself for my birthday. I really look forward to receiving it. You have such talent! 💕
Oh and,
1. Peh(배) is might be her family name. While Hannah(한나, or Hana하나?) and Miyong(미용, but that's weird name... I bet it's actually Miyeong미영) is thier first name.
2. Wife keep her own family name even after marriage. So the girls last name is might not be Peh
3. Family name comes first, and first name comes next.
4. For 2 and 3 : while living in foreign country, some people change those rules to avoid awkward situations and fit in to new customs. So... those information can be wrong 🤔
Hope these little info helps you find the family.
@@kentpaper958 hello! Thank you for your reply! I wish i was a ray of light in their life because not everyone here is good with foreigners. But for sure they were the best thing had happened to me. I cannot forget little girls faces, i adorered them. I got to know to count to 1-10 and much of korean culture. Maybe is this the reason i am attracted so much with asia. I have studied 1 year mandatin and 1 year Japanese. I would love to study some korean, the alphabet at least. (Love korean dramas haha) I am attracted to letters as a graphic designer that i am. Thank you so much for your info!!!!! Love from Athens☀️
What you should do to contact them through facebook... with the facebook translator you make a Korean call to the facebook followers to help you get them... I'm sure you find them... let me know when you get them...
I have always wondered how these amazing and beautiful things were made. Thank you for all the hard work people put into these. These people are great artisans. Thank you for the United States
Me too!!! I now have even more respect for these artisans.
As a young girl I received one of these beautiful boxes. I have collected them for years, always wondering how they were made. Now that I know it makes each box I have that much more special. Absolutely gorgeous work. Thank you for sharing this.
Beautiful. I’m astonished by how much skill, time and patience is put into creating the boxes. This is a true art.
