Kyushu Mountains, Tone River Mizunashi River/ A mountain village with stunning masonry modeling

Shiiba Village is the largest village in the Kyushu Mountains where you can see mountainous settlements. Shiiba is a regional name that refers to the upper reaches of the Mimi River, and like Yonera-so, Goka-so, and Itsuki-mura, it is a "heavenly village" that was under the control of the Hitoyoshi domain in the early modern period. Eight years ago, I visited the remarkable settlements of all the valleys, but overlooked the Tonegawa settlement. After that, he was designated as an Important Preservation District and regretted that he had done it. I didn't plan to go this time, but I changed my plan to be greedy and crossed the Hella Otchira Iidori Pass.
Tonegawa
The Tone River village is located in the east from the middle of Route 265, which runs from Kamishiiba, the center of Shiiba Village, to Gokase Town. Compared to the same "village of the heavens", Toyamago in Nagano Prefecture, Totsukawa in Nara Prefecture, and Mt. The village is Ishigaki, and residential land is gradually built and private houses are gathered. The building is long and narrow along the contour lines, and the rooms are arranged in a row.
Fudono
The Fudono area is the innermost area in Shiiba Village. Since the slope of the valley facing Lake Hyuga Shiiba extending from east to west is relatively gentle, settlements are scattered on both the north and south slopes. In the innermost Mikoshi village of Mizunashigawadani, there is one farmer who is still continuing the shifting cultivation that was carried out in the mountain villages of Japan.
Kamishiiba
In Shiiba Village, the legend of Heike, which is especially unique among the isolated mountain villages, is handed down. About 800 years ago, the samurai of the Heike, who lost the battle of Dannoura, escaped from the pursuit and escaped to the deep mountains in various places. The ancient document "Shiibayama Origin" reports as follows.
"It was Shiiba in the mountains that the remnants of the Heike clan finally arrived after escaping the pathless road. However, this hidden village was also known to Minamoto no Yoritomo, and Nasu no Yoichi Munetaka was ordered to pursue it. However, due to illness, his younger brother, Daihachiro Nasu, was ordered to revenge. Daihachiro headed for Shiiba, crossed a steep road, and finally found a deceased man who had lived in hiding. Aside from prosperity, when he saw the Heike family living quietly while farming, he pitifully abandoned the pursuit and reported to the shogunate that he had subdued. Normally, he would return to Kamakura here. However, Daihachiro set up a mansion in Shiiba and stayed here. Not only that, he helped them by building the Goshima Shrine, the guardian deity of the Heike clan, and teaching them how to farm, and lived in cooperation with each other. Then, he met and fell in love with Princess Tsurutomi, the descendant of Kiyomori Taira. "
Although it is not very credible as a legend, it is unique, but it is also interesting that Shiiba Village has only two, "Shiiba surname", which is said to be the descendant of the Heike family, and "Nasu surname", which is Genji.
Kamishiiba is the area where the central village of Shiiba Village is located. A large private house called "Tsurutomi Yashiki" in Kamishiiba is said to have been built 300 years ago, and was the setting for the love story between the legendary Tsurutomihime and Daihachiro Nasu.

今回もとても素晴らしかったです。雨の中歩く方は大変でしょうが、霧のような雲、山、水墨画のようです。最後の雨が上りの風景も最高です。石をきちんと積むことは建築の基礎、この集落は統一さていて、誰か中心になる力のある方がいたのでしょう。石垣の花は多分ベコニアですね。今はバラのような品種もありますが、昔からある丈夫は品種のものでは。今回も楽しませていただきました。ありがとうございました。

集落さま、ありがとうございました。石垣、反ってますね。雨に映える屋根瓦がとても美しいです。恐る恐るウォーカーでしたが、重伝建に指定され、見学コースができたのですね。都市計画関連のシンポで、厳しい人口・若者減少の中、若い女性が椎葉村に移住して頑張っているのを視聴したのが思い出されました。

Wow, stunning village & that's a beautiful view at 10:45 with all the clouds & mountains! I don't know what those plants at 15:43 are but the Cedar tree at 16:58 is gorgeous! This village is in the middle of the mountains so are there any main roads built? I imagine all the roads are small running around the mountains so it must take a long time to get there? Great video inc the history 👍😊
