    I really like the Ibanez 5 way switched HH setup, no middle pickup to get in the way, but positions 2 and 4 do reasonable imitations of those positions on a strat, but unlike some HSH guitars there's not a big difference in coil performance so the result is often better.

      The Captain Ibanez stock pickups are usually pretty poor. Changing the pickups in my RG was night and day difference

    • @thecaptain5026
      @thecaptain5026 7 років тому

      What did you put in them if I might ask?
      I don't think they're actually bad, but they sure are the weak link of the guitar.

    • @interestingthings8598
      @interestingthings8598 7 років тому

      The Captain i disagree. In terms of quality and looks it is great. But it is not comfortable to play at all. And im comparing it to other ibanezes i have and not strats which are the most comfy in my opinion. And it has mediocre pickups. No soul in the tone at all.

    • @thecaptain5026
      @thecaptain5026 7 років тому +1

      Interesting Things oh, that's almost weird to hear :p but I guess everyone has other taste and hands etc.
      my particular guitar can really scream but also sing. I can really feel the vibrations in my body even, the sustain is excellent.
      I played a les Paul model for very long, I would describe the neck of the ibanez as very fast and easy to play.
      you sometimes hear that every guitar is different. maybe that's it, I don't know.

    • @interestingthings8598
      @interestingthings8598 7 років тому

      The Captain i agree, my problem is i have long fingers and i hate thin ibanez necks, i simply love thick necks that i can sqeeze and huge frets, i also scalloped some of my guitars slightly to make the frets give me the feeling that they are bigger; i agree the sustain is tremendous; maybe ill try to increase the action, not sure if thats the word

    Will be seriously considering flogging the lesser loved guitars in the collection to fund this. Ibanez, no floyd, RG.. Winner.

  • @Maxx61
    @Maxx61 7 років тому

    When I look at the mass of that bridge, I'm reminded of a Kahler flat mount and how much I always preferred that over a Floyd. It would be nice if Kahler could find a way to make their bridges with a smaller footprint and yet still retain that smoothness they are noted for. I'd love this guitar with a bridge like that. On another note, if buying from a site where you can't actually see the exact guitar you're buying, spalted maple tops are a hit or miss. Some can be spectacularly figured and others, almost plain with just a hint of disease showing.

    Here's a question for people who know about guitar-wiring; I like the simple setup of two humbuckers, three-way-switch, and the middle position is... well "the middle" or in-between. - The thing is, I never knew whether it would just mix the two full pickups or if it would take two halves and basically make it one. - Is it always one or the other way, or does it vary?
    For example, the fact that Lee points out how it's wired on this one, being half and half when it's in the middle-position, makes me think that it's unusual and normally not done this way.
    Here's my actual question; How can I see how it's wired? As in, what connections decide whether it's using half a pickup or the entire pickup? - I suppose you could HEAR it, but it's difficult to figure out between different guitars with different pickups. I can never tell what makes it sound the way it sounds, cause it might just be the character of the pickups, regardless of how they're wired. - I mean, I can pick out obvious humbucker and single-coil type sounds, but all the in-between variations... it's a lot more vague.

  • @danagboyer
    @danagboyer 7 років тому

    Just a small correction, guys. In switch position 4 on two humbucker Ibanez guitars, it's actually the neck pickup wired in parallel, not the bridge and neck split. Position 5 is series, 4 is parallel. Cheers!

  • @curtwehrmeyer124
    @curtwehrmeyer124 7 років тому

    Spalted is more of a fancy sales term. What it means in the lumber grading NHLA rule book is incipient decay , this is a stage of rot which is graded against. In other words this might make pallet lumber or go to the chipper. It is not a diseased tree like meat knuckle stated.

    Bought an Ibanez Rgif8 through Andertons. I'm very much having a ton of fun with it but called about the guitar and if I could choose which one I could have from their stock. They said it just wasn't possible..... Sadly whilst it sounds and plays great the body is a three piece swamp ash construction and the bottom third does a horrible job of lining up with the others grain/pattern wise. To boot I think I'm extra unlucky as the figuring of the wood is much better on the back than the front AND no matter how hard I look online all the guitars of the same model are one or two piece construction all looking nicer than mine..... Mental.

    9:50 'steel frets and titanium truss rod' - All Ibanez's site says is that they are jumbo frets (same blurb at Andertons and elsewhere). Are you certain those are steel frets, Rob? The Cap'n didn't contradict you there so I'm a bit confused.
    Btw, first comment on UA-cam - ever! Yay!

    • @lachlanpilgrim3603

      Thanks. Yep, I understand that. However, based on my limited experience, stainless steel frets are something manufacturers love to boast about (and rightly so) - take the RG1070PBZ for example. My doubt hence arises because of lack of such explicit mention. Rob, Cap'n or anyone - please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Idk man, I love watching you guys, but there is so much to improve, and it's stuff you can actually do. Every time you play clean sounds, its super smooth and low volume and slow, and it's either that or a super boring djent riff. Show us what the guitar can do, and play it like you mean it. Every guitar sounds "meh, whatever". And you guys actually make every feature seem like gimmicks. You have all the structure in the world you need, when you wake in the morning to make these videos, try to be excited about making a proper job. I say that in the most respectful way possible. But again, it's your channel, no one asked for me to be here, If I don't like it I can just leave, before anyone says something like that.

    I've got a really nice MIJ RG570 that I got in the 90s. How much do you reckon one of them is worth now?

    This kind of "shred machine" guitars all sound good and all sound about the same... I've heard some with tone character, but they are very, VERY, rare...

    I'm really interested in buying a Chapman guitar but I want to play them before I purchase one. Last time I went to Andertons there were only around 3-4 on the shop floor and was wondering if things have changed since then? If not, is there any shop that has a good selection of them for me to try playing? Thanks!
