I mean even after Midgar you only have 1 direction you can really go. I dont think thats a bad thing, but its not like Skyrim (or whatever) where you are dropped in the world and can go to any city, do any faction, and completely ignore the main story
All Final Fantasy games are pretty linear until you get the airship and even then there's usually only one or two places you need to go story wise. The rest is revisiting older areas or areas off to the side. FF3-5 very noticeably change your transport frequently so you can only access certain areas.
The world doesn't ever really get *that* open. You get a buggy and that lets you skip a whole one town where almost nothing happens if you'd like. You get a plane and that lets you chose to either do a single side quest or proceed in the main story. You get an airship and then you can choose which order you'll do the next two major quests in. FFVII Rebirth on the other hand did exactly what I don't like an Open World game to do... made it a cookie cutter Ubisoft scavenger hunt checklist.
About the Balatro diss: if we started awarding games just by how many people worked on it or how much they costed, Concord would be Game of the Year. A game must be fun, period.
True, to some degree. It's still just a card game, one that's just a derivation of an existing one, mind you. He has a point, it's like comparing apples to submarines. Meanwhile FF7 rebirth took massive swings and risks, in a production that required the coordination and collaboration of so much creative talent, not to mention that within the borders of its small universe, it introduced a fully original card game that's been very well received in Queen's Blood. Again, he has a point. It just implies a silly comparison to put them in the same category.
@@Dan3043 idk if you’ve played Balatro but it’s not a derivation of poker, if that’s what you’re implying. It’s a roguelike deck builder like slay the spire. Don’t let the fact that you’re playing poker hands deceive you, there’s no gambling mechanics and you’re playing for high scores, not against something. I feel like calling it a derivation of poker is doing it a disservice and very reductive.
@@Dan3043 You're right that they're not in the same category, but I think you're wrong about what that category is. Balatro is "overwhelmingly postive" on steam, at a 97% positive rating, meanwhile FF7R is much, much lower. There are a lot of complaints about it, and it only sold about half of what the prior game sold. As much as I'm looking forward to the 3rd installment, it's also been a disappointment, and I honestly don't think Rebirth should have been in the running for game of the year.
@@iforgot6088 Mate, reviews are overwhelmingly positive because Balatro is being graded on a curve. Of course Rebirth is a lot more polarising, it's a million times bigger and bolder than Balatro in terms of scope, mechanics and gameplay. Balatro is a very linear experience, in terms of scope, in that what you see is what you get, then rinse and repeat. No need to worry about story pacing, fleshing out characters and making them likable, orchestrating a brilliant OST that goes hand in hand with the rollercoaster of emotions the game evokes. Let's be honest, there was absolutely no universe in which a remake of one of the most beloved games in history wasn't going to piss off a sizeable amount of the player base. Frankly it's a miracle it received a 92% on metacritic and that it has a similar approval rating from players alike, according to user review sites. I think that the games in consideration for the Game of the Year award should stand in there on their own merits, the circumstances of their development notwithstanding. I'm all up for the inclusion of Indie games in the category, as a lot of my favourite games over the last few years belong to that category, but let's not pretend like the main reason - some might say only - why Balatro is getting this recognition is because of the feat that it entails that it was produced and released by a single man. Let's br real here, *IF* Balatro, as it stands, had been developed by Ubisoft, or EA, or some other AAA studio, no one would even bat an eyelash at what the game is or has to offer/innovates on. The same cannot be said about previous GotY winner It Takes 2, or nominees like Hades and Celeste. The nomination of Balatro for the GotY accolade is basically grading on a curve, and in this case is tantamount to virtue signaling in saying "we recognise the value of Indies", or an outright gimmick for a publicity stunt relying on shock value. Also, forget Rebirth, the same applies for Silent Hill 2, Metaphor, Wukong, etc.; comparing them to Balatro is just silly. There's a cognitive dissonance here, and it's because Balatro is being graded on a curve, and not in a vacuum.
@@iforgot6088you don't think that Rebirth should have been in the running for GotY, but you think that a generic ass card game should be, because creative? 😂
Vincent valentine has so much history he deserves his own game and i don't mean the one he got or an actual sequel to ff7 without sephiroth being the main bad guy we still got the whole genesis and leader of deep ground think at the end of ff7 whole story
Unfortunately most japanese games might be too “complex” for the new generation of western gamers. It’s why SE keeps saying these games are a commercial failure. Which is wild. Lately I’m in love with what has been getting released. But I grew up with Square from the mid 90s.
I think a great example of a "modern way" to implement turn-based combat was in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It feels natural progression to the formula with manual positioning, fast menus and environmental hazards and so on that makes it so enjoyable. Not every game needed to copy Dark Souls or Nier: Automata to be considered hip with the kids or ESPECIALLY COD kids who wouldn't even spit towards the game anyway. 🤪
Regarding RPGs, Square Enix balances the mix very well. Fantasian Neo Dimension is yet to be released, there have been two SaGa games and a Dragon Quest game. All we need to do is show a little love for turn based and get a copy of Fantasian Neo Dimension this holly day. Square Enix will continue MTBA on our behalf in 2025.
@@cactusman07pim yah fantasian was amazing, I played it on iOS once I heard about it and I hadn’t felt such joy playing a game in a long time at the time. I’m so happy it’s coming to console, people who haven’t played it are in for a treat
Remake/Rebirth has an amazing battle system, it definitely scratches my action and turn-based itch. I think these games are kind of underappreciated. The scope of Remake (and definitely Rebirth) is bigger than most games in my opinion.
The best news to come out of this is regarding the trophies. I'm a trophy hunter myself, and I got the platinum for Remake, but I'm two away from Rebirth, and honestly, I gave up on them. They're the difficulty related ones, by the way, as I did all the mini games.
It's hilarious how they can be so up their own butts over something like THEIR OWN disdain for older turn-based combat that they can't even comprehend the indie games using it are competing in the same league as them now. Obviously it's the players that are wrong! And then they self-congratulate themselves with how innovative they are bringing back a world map. Smdh.. 🙄😂
I like turn based combat but I also prefer action based games. The action combat really gets my blood pumping and increases the immersion for me. I enjoy turn based games too, as I am just now getting into the Legend of Heroes series and loved Trails in the Sky. But I have enjoyed action based FF games.
Yeah I prefer turn based by far, but I enjoy action rpgs like Star Ocean, Radiata Stories. Not a fan when they made final fantasy action. Just isn’t fun for me.
@ That fair. I love games like DMC so I was right up my alley. I wouldn’t be opposed to another turned based Final Fantasy, I am a FF14 player. I just have also enjoyed the action ones.
With Rebirth, they were upfront before the game came out there was going to be no DLC, and that the Yuffie DLC was more of a tech-demo for the PS5 that they put out there. Plus, DLCs tend to make much more money than the base game because they're built on already made assets, and most of them are planned before the game launches anyways, so it'd make no sense that the sales of Rebirth would have any impact on DLCs, so that's David reading too much into stuff. They were also up-front about it being about 3 years post-Rebirth for Part 3, because they had much of the game already made (similar to Yakuza, which constantly gets praised here for reusing assets), plus the same team working on it, so a lot of this tracks with what they've said historically.
Okay...definitely had to laugh at the World Map part, considering the same company he's a part of just released DQIII and that is a fun world map to explore with all its secrets! Though, with how elitist he sounds throughout the whole article, guess it makes sense.
that's what I wanted w/FF7 remake, just a HD2D style but instead we got this abomination. they better not f up FF6 remake! that is imo the best FF game. all I want is HD2D remake, that's it..don't crap on source material or change anything like they did for FF7 remake.
@@badboy-gn8fu nah, the actual FF7 remake approach is far preferable to an HD2D FF7 remake. HD2D for a polygonal rpg is kindof nonsense. Only makes sense when remaking pixelart. FF9 Remake will probably be faithful to the original but not HD2D --- as the last 'classical FF' that approach makes total sense too. Whereas FF7's unique place in the series always made it ideal for a more radical remake. Especially because 'the original but pretty' already exists thanks to FF7 Modders.
@arglebargle5531 maybe for you but there are a ton of people who agree with me. Imo ff7 remake is an abomination. Square took the source material and crap all over it. Square doesn't know what they are doing and that's why thier company isnt doing well and thier games including ff7 remake doesn't sell well as they used to. There are other Japanese devs who make far superior jpgs
Anyone saying turn based is dead or doesn’t sell please return your copy of DQ11 to prove your point. The only reason action sells is because people have such short attention spans and have to move onto next dopamine injection
Yeah, I never understood this argument. Final Fantasy started to struggle when it went AWAY from turn-based. Plus, look at the success of BG3, Persona, Yakuza and the aforementioned DQ11. They're all breaking sales records while FF sales continue to disappoint. It's almost as if people loved FF BECAUSE IT WAS DIFFERENT.
Turn based is still fun and alive. For me personally, I want it to be engaging enough and to not be the only selling point of a game. Example: people are not really into Octopath Traveler and I find it to be underrated.
Rebirth felt like an overcorrection in the linearity department tbh, the open world felt more like something Ubisoft would put out with its' collectathons and "radio towers" etc, it just wasn't interesting to explore imo.
I love Balatro but it really shouldn’t have been nominated for goty. If it was meatier, then even if it was made cheaply by only one person that wouldn’t disqualify it.. but there’s just not a lot there.
I was also in college when FFXII was released. I got the Collector's Edition for my birthday in 2006. I liked it but was also very busy with college, my job (at the time) and World of Warcraft, so I never got around to finishing the PS2 version. I did beat the Zodiac Age remaster on the Switch last year, however. LOVED that version, and I even went so far as to have all characters except Balthier and Fran at level 99, got all the best weapons except the Wyrmhero Blade (the traditional way) or the secret/invisible weapons, and beat both superbosses. Didn't bother beating Trial Mode. Great game overall. As far as the future of Final Fantasy, I'd love to see it (temporarily) return to the 2D 16-bit era with ATB combat.
Man if Atlus and Larian collaborated and made a game with Persona's style, structure, and life sim elements and Baldur's Gate's attention to detail, exploration, and freedom you have the best game ever. Both series know what they want to be and have a lot of the same strong points, one being a JRPG with WRPG elements and the other being a WRPG with JRPG elements and similar themes of overthrowing oppressive power structures. Make it happen.
The problem is not about linearity or the type of combat. The story was neutered for the age rating and some of the changes were not consistent with that world. Did we need another convoluted inconsequential multiverse? I wouldn't be surprised if the third installment had even fewer sales.
Most people, including me, like it as it won best storytelling at the golden joystick awards, an award show entirely 100% fan voted. You are in the deep minority here and it's not an issue with the game
How exactly was the story neutered? Are we talking about the missing blood trail in the the Shinra Building? Because yeah, that was disappointing, but every other major scene in the story has been pretty faithfully adapted, and even enhanced in a lot of cases.
I'm not all that interested in the devs' feelings about turn-based vs. action rpgs. I'm more interested in when part 3 is releasing (even an estimated release date subject to change would be nice), when I can pre-order it (provided the initial release isn't a timed ps6 exclusive or something), and what the official title will be (seriously, are they being secretive about that, or are they still deciding?)
@ lol what was your favorite part of FF7R? The garbage combat? The walking simulator? The 20 hours of forced side quests to pad the clock? There are a lot of cats and lost kids to find in Midgard. Or was it the constant squeezing through small holes for 45 seconds at a time to hide loading screens? You’re a fool.
I want to see a CRPG version of FF7 where you could ultimately join Avalanche or become a Shinra asset (ie work with the Turks) with multiple life paths and story variations that end at the same logical end point (Cloud vs Sephiroth) But with different endings and outcomes for the characters. Turn based combat, but more akin to your CRPGs or even FF Tactics as the combat blueprint
@@swilliams21231 it happens I used to think the same but out of curiosity I decided to replay it and was even more baffled by how they took the first few hours of the original and somehow padded it out into 30+hr game. It’s impressive but also equally disappointing.
The mini-games were never the problem. They are fine. It's the fact they required the player to play the mini-games to progress with the story. Some of them can be daunting to the player and requires multiple attempts instead of just maybe only two. The Story progression mini-games should only be based on tutorials that are no fail.
8:27 nah, so many of my friends have told me that they're waiting til all 3 are done and then they want to buy it as a set. I've seen the same sentiment on reddit and such. I think that's why the sales were so low. I'm sure it'll pickup and the numbers will finally explode especially if they got a collector set for offer. Of course that's speculation. It could be maybe Rebirth really just had bad luck idk. I hope that the sales are better because this team did an amazing job and blew all my expectations but the only thing that matters these days is money.
Ever since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth I'm not even excited for the next one . i still have a save towards the end of the game but yet to finish it . I literally got so bored i just stopped playing .
I don't know why they care so much about the Western-centric heavily politicized Game Awards, that doesn't even really represent the Western gaming audience. Really shows where Square Enix stands.
If one guy makes a game and gets put in the same lineup as you for an award when you spent hundreds of millions on yours, that should actually be a cause for you to pause and rethink what you are doing.
@@ShinDMitsuki it should be cause for you to pause and rethink how indi games should have their own categories. Why are you guys acting like its a Square problem and not the award shows fault for poorly arranging the huge effort games with a smaller scale game. Its like comparing 1 tasty mini sized candy bar to an entire kitchen of many foods you love
Except if people decide it's goty then it's goty. It's a game and people like it the most. What is there to categorize differently. Oh no the giant company don't get the award cause 1 guy outdid them with simplicity and fun.@@Clouds12012
We've truly become a pro-corporate society if people are saying that indie creators being able to outcompete AAA with far fewer resources is evidence of a *problem*.
Well in this case Im gonna hold you up on that; I dont think balatro even comes CLOSE to any of the other games in the goty awards. This is just bs on part of some gamers that want to think because they have a little fun with a random game its goty. Not that I find a problem with indies competing against them, for example I think manor lord is one game that if it would compete, Id totally see why. But balatro is just not at a level where it should be considered goty.
I don't think saying action combat is more immersive is necessarily the same as saying that action combat is better. Red Dead Redemption 2 for example allowed your character to gain weight from overeating. Does that mechanic make the game more realistic, and immersive? Sure. Does it make the game better? Not really in my opinion. I honestly find the idea of having to watch my weight in a video game kind of annoying. So for my money, Red Dead 2 is actually too immersive for its own good in some places. Immersion has costs and benefits, just like anything else. The developers just wanted to try their hand at a more immersive action based combat system, so they went for it. The answer to whether or not the new combat system ended up better, or worse, than the old system is something for each player to decide.
Lol great shirt! Kinda bummed about the shade against turn based though. Was hoping with the success of Metaphor and Baldur's Gate 3 that they'd maybe rethink that approach. I really didn't like the combat in FF16 and unfortunately didn't finish it because of it. I wonder if Expedition 33 will be the modern turn based Final Fantasy that I've been dreaming of!
Action play is neat, though I think Turn-based is a lot cooler because your attention is shifted to other characters, making them feel like they’re contributing just as much too. They may say stuff about turn-based and want to take it out, but there’s real impact to be had in that style.
FF7 was the one that got me into rpgs back in the day when i was a small person. I really enjoy the new versions and don't mind the active combat system, especially when you're grinding your way through, goes a little faster. Itd be nice if your experience transferred over in the next one. Seemed a little off to be starting at the beginning again. Will emerald and ruby be around?
Action based combat and Turn based combat really just depends on the game. Honestly, i haven't cared about FF since FF12 so I don't really care about FF being either style.
Honestly, I wish they would stop milking final fantasy 7. Every time they do this, it reduces the magic of it a bit more. Remember dirge or cerebrus?? Neither does anyone. Ever.
It doesn't change the magic of the original game to me. It's still there. I just ignore all the extra milking garbage, never bought another FF7 related thing because I could see it for what it was. FF7's story was finished.
can anyone link the soundtrack playing in the background? thats a beautiful version of the chrono cross opening... and great video like always david...
Never played the OG. Will play it once im done with the trilogy but me and my wife loved remake and rebirth. I love the combat. Its a perfect max between turn base and action. I love dq11 and hated the action in ff16. So this is a perfect mix. The story goes in a good pace to someone that didnt play the original.
I didn't mind Remake being linear. Any time a game has a large open world it always ends up interfering with the flow of the story. Sure, you COULD ignore all side quests on your way to the goal, but if you have the same ocd mindset I do then you HAVE to get them all out of the way before you finish. That's what killed games like Dragon Age: Inquisition for me. Too much side content that I forgot what the main story even was for a long stretch of time!
Perfect "political" answer about the battle systems, much expected from a japanese elite game producer. Though the bias in favor of one of those systems couldn't be clearer, looking at FF history since the 00s. And i'm not even speaking from the place of a frustrated old schooler, because i'm an old schooler who is indifferent about the systems... i'm just being fair calling them out. At least the remakes (all future projects) could be turn based, which would make sense.
Why not make the highwind fly higher than the highest peak on the map and from there the player can travel the entirety of the halfway rendered map. Essentially the landing and taking off scene. 100 $ says Yuffie gazes upon the horizon then suddenly has an idea, then strategically causes the tiny bronco to force a landing. When she reveals that this is her homeland she steals all the partys' matieria and we start the game on Level 50.
Ff7 remake would have been bad if it was "open world". Would have lost so much story so they could add more buildings to look at one time. Rebirth could be region based because you finally leave into the world and go from one region to another story wise.
Rebirth started great, but got progressively worse as it went. The pacing was a disaster. Way too many mandatory or semi-mandatory minigames. The folio system was a downgrade over remake, and locking some of that behind new-game plus is unforgivable. The late/post-game challenges also mostly sucked because they forced you to fight the same enemies over and over and locked you into certain party members (ugh). I was so hyped for this game but it made so many unforced errors. My favorite part of RPGs is building up your characters for the super bosses at the end, but because this is a trilogy, we aren't getting that in the way we wanted. The original was so grand in scope for a 1997 game, it's a shame that they ruined the remake by breaking it up into pieces.
Turn based ain't dead, just look at the upcoming Expedition 33 game. Maybe Squeenix should do something along those lines? And the passive aggressive Baltro diss was kind of unprofessional imo
So they are going to milk harder on the most famous game of the franchise, after looking at Atlus' milking plans on Persona 5. It's a much safer plan than reviving old abandoned games that deserved to return, or even reviving abandoned FF subseries like FFT.
Square is so out of touch. FFX was linear, but it gave the illusion that you didn’t miss out on anything exploration-wise. People wanted to explore MIDGAR. That was not a critique of linearity vs open world. Midgar could have been linear as long as the line travelled all throughout. These devs are cooked.
Seriously. FF10 linearity worked perfectly because the way the story framed it: every summoner must do a pilgrimage to all the shrines on the way to Zanarkand. It only made sense to be linear. FF13 was the opposite. It was linear while the protags had no idea where the hell to go, which should've given player choice on where to go. Also, the lack of towns really killed pacing. It was just poor design. Squenix really needs to look back on 16/32-bit era and what truly made FF golden.
I remember X being just as polarizing where I grew up as the new FF games does now. People either loved or hated it. Some loved the new way they did turn based, and how linear it was, while others wanted more of FFVII style saying X sucked. Personally, I have enjoyed just about every FF game I played except for maybe X-II, lightning returns (enjoyed the first 2), and revenant wings. But I enjoy a huge variety of games. Each one had great qualities in some places, while being less quality in others, with a few standouts for me like IX and Tactics. But the problem is this: Instead of taking the game for what it was made to be and meant to be, people want to co.pare it to every other FF game in existence instead, setting up expectations that would never be realized, because Remake isn't OG VII XVI isn't IX, XII isn't X, and so forth. People just out there being unrealistic. Square is definitely a bit out of touch though when it comes to how they perceive turn-based games in modern times though.
@@danielritchie3465 people do make those comparisons as you say, but I don’t think it’s the same as what’s going on now. Even FF7 was called ugly and super deformed. The pre-rendered backgrounds were limited and confusing, etc. FF9 seemed like a step backward and the battle system was SLOW. Tetra master was no triple triad. Criticism is normal and natural. Each game was made with intention true to itself, and they found their footing. In my opinion, things fell apart once FF13 came out. Square wanted to recreate the success of western games since GTA and call of duty sold like crazy. FF13 tried to be more of a point A to point B style similar to FPS(according to the devs 🤦🏾♂️). 15 tried to be a sandbox game, and 16 tried to be action. FF7 remake was a coward’s attempt to not be outdated. Rebirth paid the price of not having a hype shield. The games were no longer being made with final fantasy in mind. I knew square was truly and forever cooked when Bravely Default was a great success and popular with fans. Instead of realizing fans like the classic turn-based gameplay and general atmosphere of the game, Square said that clearly fans enjoy the hand-held nature of the product.
Hamaguchi said he wouldn't make FFVII Remaster(*) have such a difficult trophy list. Does that mean that they'll drop the "Clear all chapters in Hard Mode" trophy for #3? Absolutely not! I know that they want to be consistent. However, I think that the third trophy list will probably drop the virtual boss gauntlet, especially since the summons we're looking at for part 3 are the most powerful yet... Hades, Solar Bahamut(aka Bahamut ZERO), Phoenix and Typhon. And I doubt they could add in Knights of the Round as that would be like putting the King Thordain raid from FFXIV into FFVII. ;p I'm not holding my breath because even if they trophy list was easy enough for even someone like me, who hates challenge modes, to do it, I wouldn't play it anyways as that would mean I'd have to go through the first two games since these three games are connected. Still, I am not going to diss the third fgame off-cuff. We'll see what the trophie entail. And I'm glad Hamaguchi realized he went too crazy. ;)
I enjoyed how strenuous he made the Platinum Trophy. It was the most rewarding PT I’ve received so far. Eliminate the irksome Chocobo Glide mini-game, the piano’s slow reaction time during Cinco De Chocobo on a slower setting, & the cheap ass 3D Brawler. Beating Sephiroth on Hard Mode was the most rewarding aspect of it.
6:40 then me and all the OG fans ain’t gonna be buying it any time soon. He can brag about Rebirth all he wants it’s a certified flop. We now live in a world where Baldurs gate 3 exists. That game has the most basic combat system. And because of that they was able to focus on characters, party, role playing, items/equipment, spells, tons of replay value. Critics liked it, audiences liked it, and it sold 15 million copies. Vs the estimated 2.5 million rebirth sold. All of BG3 probably has 15 minutes worth of cutscenes in a single play through. Every new FF game comes with a 20 hour generic anime. Everything a FF developer says now a day is coup. The company is currently on fire and there OG fans have dipped. DQ3 rm had a higher peak on steam then FF16. Read em and weep.
Final Fantasy has always been as selectively open as it is linear. Every game has a matter of linear progression because of limitations to travel. The people who are pissed about the “linear game play” haven’t paid attention to the mechanics of the franchise at all.
Might be from sepiroth's point of view? In the mobile game they introduced young sephiroth and that game has FF7 remakes character models + animations, in worse ofc. I really dislike the action rpg take with the immersion. At one point I always spam the same attack string anyway. I think BD3 should have been the ultimate wake up call that tactic/ turn base rpg can be immersive. When I cast fireblade on Steiner with my Vivi I felt like a friggin black mage and X-2 for example was such a dynamic turn based RPG it was revolutionary in my opinion. The battlefield itself told a story, you did not leave the same way u went into the battle, quite literally and visually.
After part 3 I recommend they don't mess with FF7 anymore. Lets go back and remake FF6 in HD-2D or whatever. FF7 is reaching burn out at this point and a lot of people are already sick of it (not me but just saying).
I would agree, their sells have concerned them so they are rushing out the next entry. As you don't want to do DLC for a title that didn't bring in the number of gamers you were aiming for. As DLC buyers are going to be a subset for the original figure (so even smaller number). Unfortunately for them because each entry is a "sequel", they are unlikely to get the same number of purchases as FF7RM which was released in the middle of the pandemic. Also their Playstation exclusivity is hurting them and they need to get it out on other platforms a lot quicker. I refused to buy a PS5 and I'm waiting for the PC release. Octopath 2 has sold rather well for being a "turned based game". No action is not "more immersive". It's button mashing and stimming of the players. Meanwhile they lose out on the beautiful aesthetics, dialogue, and world while they are focused on smashing those buttons. This is like claiming movies are not immersive. Turn based also provides the ability for many more options that just can't be implemented well in an action rpg. Does this mean they can't integrate upon the turned base formula? No. Turn based has a lot of room for designer freedom that action rpgs do not.
He never said (even between the lines) that action combat is better lol Instigating? They invited you to events and met with you but you speak of them like they are evil. Every time you say "between the lines" its something negative YOU added to spin it in a bad way. You must hate Square now?
No, I love square I just want them to be the best company that they can be, but apparently you instead want me to be bribed and manipulated and give a “yes man” biased opinion. Whatever.
@davidvinc Rewatch your video and you literally make Square sound like they intentionally have bad intentions. You even did a whole voice for them too lol You dont have to worship them or owe them any respect but you took nothing they said with any benefit of a doubt and added your own negative interpretations to every detail of what they said. Its been a dream i have had my entire life to have your connections to Square. I know thats not relevant to anything here but it adds to me being confused by why you looked at them in a bad light this entire video
@@Clouds12012 I mean - It's pretty clear in the interview he does not like turn based. "The idea that if you push the button, your actions are immediately reflected on screen, which generally leads to a higher level of immersion." Even Japanese politeness aside if you work in a corporate environment for any amount of time you can read between the lines to get the real meaning. "higher level of immersion"=better or my way is better. I almost feel he's just bitter looking at the sales of other turn based RPG's which shows that an action focus might be a mistake. Just look at Dragon Quest III. For him to say turn based isn't as immersive and yet the turn based game is crushing his with sales is kinda funny. Yah, everyone here wants Square to do better and be the best company they can be, but that's only going to happen if they admit mistakes and make proper course corrections. The entire direction of FF7 remake I feel was the worst direction they could take it. I get changing things in a remake and sometimes it's needed, but this isn't a remake, it's an entirely different game. I almost feel this should be FF7 "What If" not Remake/Rebirth. I mean how long did it take them to pivot off of damn NFT's. It's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt with those types of mistakes not that far in the rear view mirror.
@ryuknight5727 But what you dont understand is that he literally said pushing the button leads to higher emersion, NOT better anything. EMERSION IS THE KEY WORD He never said the word "better" in that statement. Emersion has NOTHING to do with being better or not in any way. Call of Duty 6 is far more emersive than Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but i like FF7R2 waaaay more. (Infinitely more) Rebirth is a masterpiece to me
@@Clouds12012 For him immersion is better. Why would he say it otherwise? Immersion does equal better to some people. Not everyone, but there's a reason people call out a dislike of things that are immersion-breaking. "I liked it, but then this happened that broke my immersion and I just couldn't take the game/movie/etc seriously anymore and stopped playing/watching." But at this point with your last few comments I think you are probably a bit too invested to see past your bias. I mean you stated that Rebirth is a masterpiece to you and while that's good, it makes it hard to take and see critiques, especially on the creators. I mean it can be for me to take critiques on things I feel are masterpieces and that's generally the same for everyone. You even admitted earlier that it's your dream to be as connected to Square. I think it's a nice dream to have, but as they say never meet your idol. I think you'd be surprised at how they look at things and I say this as someone who's worked in corporate environments for a long time. For now I'll just got back to DQ III and hope that Square doesn't screw up FFIX remake, FFT Remake, and if they do FFVI that they don't screw with the mechanics and story like they did with FFVII.
A game could be linear or open world and be fine by me. For an RPG, I just want it to feel like a real space. FFX was linear, but I liked that you would backtrack to previous locations and they'd be different, have new content or be a gateway to new locations. FFXIII just felt like a bunch of set pieces that you used up and never came back to and the open area was just an empty static field, which felt way worse. As for combat, I just don't have any faith in SE making a good system anymore. I played VII Remake and it just had some baffling bad decisions. It's possible that they cleaned it up for Rebirth (I honestly haven't really been following it after the reviews for Remake were so uninformative), but the system would just be functional - not exciting.
I think it’s hilarious he was low-key throwing shade at “Balatro”! 😂 While I enjoyed the combat in “FF7: Remake” and what I’ve been able to play of “FF XVI” so far, I wish we could get a AAA turn-based game from Square-Enix. With the success of games like “Persona 5” & “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, not to mention the continuing popularity of “Pokemon”, just seems like it would be a home-run for them. I’ve even heard rumors that “DQ 12” won’t be turn-based. (And SE is very hit-or-miss with action-RPG’s. They have awesome ones like “Strangers of Paradise: FF Origins”, and then stinkers like “Infinity Strash” 🤷♂️). Btw, did you go to college here in Georgia or out there? I started at Perimeter & then transferred to GA State after I got my Associate’s. I think we were in college about the same time.
Turn base doesnt look as good with high realistic combat. Imo at least. I prefer turn base but i do recognize that. The star ocean series is action and fun. Thats action done right that doesnt feel like action
Personally I hope they milk the FF7 universe for all it's worth. If Cloud and company aren't selling anymore and part 3 does worse than Rebirth and they're not going to put characters like Angeal and Genesis in the main games then I want more spin-offs or whatever it takes. Make another Zack game, make a Genesis game whatever it takes to get new ideas and new content out there.
imo square lost their ways. they need new leadership and go back to their roots. all they need to do is look at their past glory. I been playing the pixel remasters and those are the FF games want!
They’re on the same playing field because one is actually fun and the other just distracts you with bright lights and nostalgia but never really delivers 😂
final fantasy 7 remake was fun but the storytelling was horrible. they took a 5 hour portion of the original and bloated it with boring dungeons and mini games and unhinged tetsuya nomura style cutscenes. the battles + materia, the music and the visuals were all amazing though
I see you too kmy advice! Great job! 😂😂😂 I like the passive agressive shirt that’s directed towards me 🤣 I hope we get to visit all of Midgar int he next game & all of Junon. That’s where FF16 failed. We couldn’t visit any of the major cities. Only the secondary cities.
Yeah, your comment was extraordinarily rude and uncalled for. And for someone who said that they’re glad they never subscribed to me you sure do seem to hang out here a lot.
I really hope he isn’t throwing shade at Balatro. It’s a fantastic game with great game direction. I get there are differences in resources and pure sizes of the games but that never factors into my personal enjoyment of a game. As far as action rpgs go I usually find them less engaging than turn based. A lot of the combat is basically dead air mashing the attack button and Simon says rolling. Both can be done super well though.
Agreed on the action systems. FF 16 was just pure button mashing to get through it. There was no strategy needed for 99% of the game. I didn’t use them but they even added auto dodge mechanics into the game which meant that you could just spam X for 40 hours and beat the game.
People are stupid lol. Even in the original Final Fantasy 7, Midgar was linear. The world didnt open up till AFTER you left Midgar.
@@danielgaines9935
You are 100% correct!! People need to chill tf out
@zenwuu fair enough.
I really want them announce the Final Fantasy IX Remake already. I would kill a man to see that revealed.
Make RPG's Turn Based Again ©️
We have plenty of turn based RPG’s, just not Final Fantasy.
I’ve played more turn based RPGs this year than action. lol
I’d like them to at least switch it up maybe. I’m sure they could figure it out, like how trails through daybreak
I’m so happy it’s coming to console, people who haven’t played it are in for a treat
world map! is this a first in gaming?! this is incredible!
Remake/Rebirth has an amazing battle system, it definitely scratches my action and turn-based itch. I think these games are kind of underappreciated. The scope of Remake (and definitely Rebirth) is bigger than most games in my opinion.
Yeah the lack of appreciation for Rebirth's battle system is frustrating. It's incredible.
I would prefer Creative Business Unit I to make new Final Fantasy games instead of continuing 7 after part 3.
Finally! I'll be honest, it was killing me not getting news on this.
It's hard for me to get hyped for this style of Final Fantasy game, but good for the people that like it. Final Fantasy VI HD-2D, that got me excited.
that's what I wanted w/FF7 remake, just a HD2D style but instead we got this abomination. they better not f up FF6 remake! that is imo the best FF game. all I want is HD2D remake, that's it..don't crap on source material or change anything like they did for FF7 remake.
My thoughts exactly
That would be neat. Maybe they'll remake IX HD-2D style.
Should also return DQ3 HD as well to show how dead turn based is.
Metaphor is the most salient, recent example proving turn-based is alive and well
Yeah, I never understood this argument.
EXACTLY fps aren't made with rpg fans in mind so why is every rpg developer trying to placate the new dumber video game enthusiasts... Make RPG's Turn Based Again! ©️
Turn based is still fun and alive. For me personally, I want it to be engaging enough and to not be the only selling point of a game. Example: people are not really into Octopath Traveler and I find it to be underrated.
I was 15 when FFXII came out.
I enjoyed the mini games in rebirth. I wouldn't object to some of them being post game content though.
After Rebirth i never want to play another minigame in my entire life..
Watch ppl complain about the lack of optional mini games in part 3 next...
Final Fantasy Tactics 2 David’s Quest
Coming January 2025
Man if Atlus and Larian collaborated and made a game with Persona's style, structure, and life sim elements and Baldur's Gate's attention to detail, exploration, and freedom you have the best game ever.
Both series know what they want to be and have a lot of the same strong points, one being a JRPG with WRPG elements and the other being a WRPG with JRPG elements and similar themes of overthrowing oppressive power structures.
Make it happen.
I haven't even started Rebirth, it's still in its plastic. But still this is all interesting. I will play it before the 3rd game comes out at least 😂
You should.. and make sure you get your hands on a ps5 pro
Which parts are inconsistent?
Sadly what I get from that last comment is "We're going to continue milking the hell out of FF7 until the industry shuts down"
Yeah, DEFINITELY gave "how else can we milk this thing?" vibes. Gross.
I played the OG FF7 and nothing else, not going to pay them to be lazy.

Chained Echoes was developed by one person and I’ll take it over any Final Fantasy that’s released since XII.

@blkwng or you just don't like it as much as everyone else. A game that is amazing deserves what the people award it.
I don't understand why dont have both. Some pixelized turn based jrpgs and the newer high budget action titles.
They are allergic to making money, that’s why.
He did not shade turn base combat. He said he loved them.

Hmmm i wonder if part 3 could get advent children dlc
Whine some more
I think making this a 3 part game spread out over almost 10 years was a mistake. Should have been 2 parts with like 4 years in between each title
Man I love 7. But man can we get some love to another title.
Metaphor ReFantasia is a slap in the face to Square Enix for abandoning turn-based combat.
Turn based ain't dead, just look at the upcoming Expedition 33 game. Maybe Squeenix should do something along those lines? And the passive aggressive Baltro diss was kind of unprofessional imo
Final Fantasy 12 is amazing
And I doubt they could add in Knights of the Round as that would be like putting the King Thordain raid from FFXIV into FFVII. ;p
I'm not holding my breath because even if they trophy list was easy enough for even someone like me, who hates challenge modes, to do it, I wouldn't play it anyways as that would mean I'd have to go through the first two games since these three games are connected.
Still, I am not going to diss the third fgame off-cuff. We'll see what the trophie entail. And I'm glad Hamaguchi realized he went too crazy. ;)
10:47 star ocean did this in a single game with 2 main characters.
I wish I had a shirt like that when I first started using the internet.
Read em and weep.
hd2d is the future
Final Fantasy has always been as selectively open as it is linear. Every game has a matter of linear progression because of limitations to travel. The people who are pissed about the “linear game play” haven’t paid attention to the mechanics of the franchise at all.
The only FF7 related game I love is the Crisis Core. Zack is a phenomenal protagonist, and a cutie ☺️
6:48 - Then neither is my money.
Thanks sir
Not them DLCing FF7 ☠️ (and havent started the FF7 lore [was going to start the story with the remake).
I want my FF 13s remakes
FF used to be my number 1 jrpg series to play, now its not even in my top 10 anymore, its just a DMC clone now, what a disgrace.
🚮
He never said (even between the lines) that action combat is better lol
Instigating? They invited you to events and met with you but you speak of them like they are evil. Every time you say "between the lines" its something negative YOU added to spin it in a bad way.
You must hate Square now?
No, I love square I just want them to be the best company that they can be, but apparently you instead want me to be bribed and manipulated and give a “yes man” biased opinion. Whatever.
@davidvinc
Rewatch your video and you literally make Square sound like they intentionally have bad intentions. You even did a whole voice for them too lol
You dont have to worship them or owe them any respect but you took nothing they said with any benefit of a doubt and added your own negative interpretations to every detail of what they said.
@ryuknight5727
But what you dont understand is that he literally said pushing the button leads to higher emersion, NOT better anything.
EMERSION IS THE KEY WORD
He never said the word "better" in that statement.
I went to KSU, the big city of Kennesaw! I was so excited to go because for me it was a huge city
Turn base doesnt look as good with high realistic combat. Imo at least. I prefer turn base but i do recognize that. The star ocean series is action and fun. Thats action done right that doesnt feel like action
i love the shirt
hi David
Personally I hope they milk the FF7 universe for all it's worth. If Cloud and company aren't selling anymore and part 3 does worse than Rebirth and they're not going to put characters like Angeal and Genesis in the main games then I want more spin-offs or whatever it takes. Make another Zack game, make a Genesis game whatever it takes to get new ideas and new content out there.
triple a game dev bubble is bursting - thank god - let's move on
Dirge of Cerberus remake confirmed
Did you ever play FF11 or 14, then quit, or just never did because it’s not your thing?
Playing 16 currently
Yay first comment, hi David!
I just want a remake of parasite eve
Ain’t even beat rebirth or crisis core yet
Platinum are supposed to be difficult, that's the whole point...
Agreed. Long as there's no bullshit online or multiplayer only trophies. That's the kinda bull crap I hate
you gotta be in your early 40s like me
Yup!
Oh, no, part 4? :D :D Buy it you monkeys, buy it.
technically, it's FF 6
imo square lost their ways. they need new leadership and go back to their roots. all they need to do is look at their past glory.
Great job! 😂😂😂 I like the passive agressive shirt that’s directed towards me 🤣
I hope we get to visit all of Midgar int he next game & all of Junon.
