- devowe.com/lavalier-mic-conne... - Audio Technica ATR-3350 connected directly to the Canon 7D DSLR. I wanted to do a quick audio test to see how well the 7D handled the ATR3350 connected directly to the microphone port. Notice the audio levels are extremely high and my voice is distorted. Using the ATR3350 connected directly to a DSLR is not a very good option at all unless you have Magic Lantern for the 550D (T2i), 5D Mark II, or other DSLR.
UPDATE 8/7/12 - Canon has released a new firmware for the 7D that allows control over the audio levels: www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consume...
With Magic Lantern, you can control the gain control. Since the 7D has automatic gain control (AGC) (See UPDATE above), the levels are blown way out to -0db in the video.

Zoom H1 digital audio recorder: amzn.to/2IoxZiH
3.5mm mono to stereo adapter: amzn.to/31N1fr9
☞ PROS:
✏ Convenient way to have on-talent audio without extra equipment
✏ Could work very well with a the 7D or DSLR that has the Magic Lantern firmware hack (Such as the Canon 5D Mark II, T2i, or others)
☞ CONS:
✏ Nearly unusable audio because of the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) on the some cameras
✏ Only records to left channel with provided 3.5mm connection (simple solution would be to buy a 3.5mm mono to stereo adapter like this one: amzn.to/31N1fr9)

Hello, this is Michael from devowe.com with another quick review. I have the Audio Technica ATR-3350 lavalier microphone connected directly to the Canon 7D with its twenty foot cable. The camera is approximately twelve to fifteen feet away from myself. This is the raw audio - no post-production whatsoever. And so there you have it - the quick overview of the Audio Technica ATR-3350 connected directly to the Canon 7D. Thanks for watching, and we'll see you later! - Фільми й анімація
Pretty decent mic for under $30!

It does thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Have a wonderful and yummy holiday
Hi @BookingBradley, I use Lexar high speed cards almost exclusively. Thanks for watching!
Extremely helpful. Thank you very much.
Short and to the point. Well done!
@RedBird1997 , I'm sure it would. You can also use the Magic Lantern firmware on the Canon T3i/600d. Hope that helps!
-Michael
@TioCharlieEnglish The hissing is amplified by the AGC on the 7D. I used this lav mic (with an Zoom H1 on-talent) for a company tour for The QC Group (youtube . com/theQCgroup) and the audio ended up pretty clean. Thanks for watching!
You're welcome. Do you mean the titles during the interviews? That was done with After Effects.
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
@SpiritualWarrior30 Thanks, you too!
Thanks for posting. I watched your QC group tour video. Wondering what'd you use for the titles to spell our quality? Thanks.
It is for the camera. You may want to bring it to a camera store and ask them to update the firmware. Otherwise, go to usa canon com / cusa/ support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_ii#DriversAndSoftware and download the latest firmware and install it on your camera.
Forget the mono to stereo converter thats not needed. Just assign the left channel if thats the sole channel the lav mic is on to the dialog preset aka in the center channel...not that hard....if you use magic lantern you have more control over this too...you can assign the left channel or right to internal or external that way you could use the left for say the lav mic and the right for a shotgun mic or the internal mic.I have the Zoom H1 as well I might add just remember to use ALL options!
@MaKsPuA I wouldn't recommend it. Though the ATR 3350 is an omni-directional mono (1 channel) microphone, it's more for dialog. For ambient sound, try to get stereo sound. The Zoom H1 works really well for this - it's light, fairly inexpensive, and produces very decent audio. See the description for a link to the H1. Hope that helps!
@michaeldevowe
ok thanks a lot for your reply
@SpiritualWarrior30 Make sure your transmitter AND receiver are both turned on. Consider searching for tutorials or walkthroughs based on your model of Sennheiser lavalier. Hope it works out for you.
Yes it has an adapter. Everything was on, i have the adapter that comes with it. Is the one that connects to the camera and it send the signal to the laviliars.
@Aaronjfilmz Yes, the microphone is connected directly to the DSLR in the microphone port on the side. You can buy it on Amazon: amzn .to/vS9Q5e (remove spaces)
Depending on the situation and ambient noise, I will use the ATR-3350 and Zoom H1 on the talent (subject). The H1 is in a cell phone holster hooked on their belt in the back. The only problems with this is the amount of extra wires required, potential issues getting the talent to slip the wire through their shirt, and syncing the audio in post. Check out The QC Group tour I produced - you can see the lav mic on the tour guide. Hope this helps! youtu .be /4Xtc6sPFQHA
Plug the lavalier into the microphone port on the left side of the camera.
@SpiritualWarrior30 Make sure your microphone switch is on, and the jack is completely plugged in. Are you using any sort of adapter?
Hey Michael, I have a Canon 60D and I am scheduled to do a professional interview this weekend. I am looking into the Lavalier idea too, what could u reco? I don't even know how you have it setup, is it possible to have two (maybe through a splitter?) those extended cables, are they easy to find? Haven't really messed with lavs before, by the way- I'm used to ZoomH4 and Rode but I don't want the crazy background noises.
You suggest buy a 3.5 mono to stereo chord, how exactly does that work with 7D? Also, I have Final Cut Pro, wouldn't I be able to adjust the sound in the post film editing? I have a ZOOM H1, but I find that It also has very high gain levels and it catches external noise as well, AC units, lots of ambient noise, how can a good sound quality be achieved, like for instance a commercial sound where the voice is mainly all that's heard, as in a voice over, w/o V.O. no time code.
You need to monitor your audio actively and adjust the levels manually..turn off the auto gain on the bottom and set levels manually. Also you can easily remove in post edit using audacity, but remove the noise before you import the audio file. Make sure you have a windscreen as well!
A mono to stereo adapter simply duplicates the left channel audio to the right creating a dual mono audio track. Yes, most NLEs will allow you to 'Fill Right Channel' or something similar. To get the best audio, try to place the lav microphone as close as possible to the talent's mouth (without causing any issues or scuffling noises). Hope this helps!

@mclaren777 Hey thanks!!
I wasnt sure if there was a funtion in the camera that I need to press, or set?
Didn't show us how to connect it. Is it via the mic connection? Sorry newbie question.
I have a T2i with magic lantern and I do Steadicam video in streets/places so I would like to know if this mic is ok to record ambiant sound.
thanks
Hey I m having problems connecting my lavalier to my 7 d. I m not getting any sound. What m I missing? is a sennheiser style. please help
Will it work with NIKON D5100 ? It is great because the audio will be recorded along with Video and we don't need to think about the SYNCH problem.
Cata, If you have at least version 2.04 firmware on your 5D Mark II, then you should have the ability to change your audio levels.
so what do you just hook the cable up and have it attached to the camera? where can i find this system???
I was having issues with my mic recording only on one channel till I got a mono to stereo adaptor. Now I can see the audio on both channels but there's a weird issue- people viewing my videos on a smart phone get no audio UNLESS they plug in their headphones- for everyone else there's no audio problems. I'm so new to this and I can't find ANY info- do you know why this is and what I can do to fix it?
how would you connect one of those mics to a canon 600d?
@michaeldevowe what does magic lantern do?
wow, alot of hissing with that mic.
Hi, thanks.....I have a question......what was the video set up of your cam?.
I believe for this shot I used an Olympus f/1.2 50mm shot at 23.976fps.
Michael DeVowe Thanks.
what kind of memory cards do you use to upload your videos?
hi.. does this work with canon eos 600d?
When I connect directly I only get a mono signal... just one channel. If I go through a mixer I get both channels. Any ideas?
will it come out on both left and right channel
with a canon t5i
@RedBird1997 Magic Lantern is a firmware hack: bit. ly/ r6KTLu (remove spaces)
