    This is Vinny and I want to say something since I am getting roasted and only one side of the story is being told. For one I never said that I don't believe in power, I use to have one! If u remember the argument it was about pro cyclist, all I was saying was that if pros didn't have power meters they would still be good. Guys back in the day were going just as fast as they are now. Power meters are a great training tool, but they are for achieving the last 1% of potential. I didn't use to just ride aimlessly, my coach was Mike Neel who was the director for 7-11 and Chris Carmichael's coach. As for you stealing my KOM congrats on a good ride I didn't even know that I had it, I haven't posted on Strava for over 3 years. But when I got that time it was 45 miles into an 80 mile ride 6 years ago. There is a big difference driving to the area and warming up and treating it like a time trial. For all the minions saying I suck or that I'm pissed that you took the KOM couldn't be farther from the truth. I have been a cat 1 for over a decade and done all the big stage races on the west coast including Tour of Utah, Redlands, Cascade, Mt. Hood, Bisbee (RIP a great race) Tour of Gila and 80% of all the regional races in California. I have won 15-20 Pro 1/2 races over the years in arguably one of the toughest districts in the country. I guess the "Drama" makes to get alot of UA-cam hits but I dont even race anymore and am 37 years old and washed up and haven't owned a road bike since the fall of last year. I had to give my road bike back to the team I was on. I prefer to ride MTN bikes and use my cross bike for the few road rides that I do. I'm not here to argue on the internet, or tell you how good I was. In reality at the pro level I was mediocre and wasn't gifted. I rode my bike 25 hours a week when I was serious and worked harder then anybody. I don't appreciate guys on here who know nothing about me, treating me like a hack from a couple sound bites on the internet. Peace out

      VINNY! I pinned your comment to the top so that everyone has a chance to hear your side. Couple things,
      1: I didnt drive and treat it like a time trial, I road from home and kept riding into town.
      2: I fully get that you have won races and that I have not, I really did try to give you praise and always have. You are the closest thing I have to a local pro, so getting KOMS in my backyard held by no body is not fun. Your time on this was FAST and was done when you were still fit AF. So its a legit benchmark to try to take down.
      3: The internet is full of trolls dude, one being your boy who roasted me and talked hella shit. So thats kinda what prompted me to add in a little drama to this. Which to be honest, is a bit doochey of me. It does make for good entertainment but its kinda a bit of a sucker punch to you because you cant really defend yourself. Its hard to balance the local vibe and the UA-cam vibe, which I really dont want to ruin my my name locally since I have to see and ride with everyone.
      4: I will never be a pro, its not my goal nor could I be even be if it was. But when I started cycling you were like a god among men, your fitness was unreachable. So to be able to even get a glimpse at it, makes me super happy for the gains I have made. I feel that others want to see and hear about those gains.
      I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I didnt mean any disrespect. But please take this more as a joke then an actual jab at you. Its just Strava, its not that serious, maybe one day I can win something.

      I don't know man. It's kinda like vinny was just content to be out of the game just enjoying the beach after such a hard time getting to where he was once and all the sudden gets put on blast for a random convo he had about power meters and then to drive it home further gets a kom taken (which he said he didn't even compete at) while a blogger makes it seem like there was an actual competition. I'm pretty sure by the sound of it if vinny would have taken that segment seriously there would have been no touching it by vc. Which also backs up his claim about power meters

    • @Matt-gw4dc

      My perspective of you - painted by VC - was some old school badass who rips peoples legs off on the bike. With that rhetoric, my opinion is that you are an egotistical cry baby who can't handle a few internet trolls.

      Ron Moulton All I can say is keep riding! Push yourself just that much further each time you go out. Extra couple beats per minute here, couple extra watts there, couple extra miles more than you planned originally, etc... I found intermittent fasting to be a great weight loss tool, and after the ride I break my fast with a protein shake and that’s it. Stretch, shower, then eat. Keep doin’ good work!

    Love the excitement. Your love of the sport is contagious. Great power to weight numbers! Thanks for sharing the numbers. I’m only around 4.5 w/kg but always interested to see real #’s from other amateurs. A KOM is a KOM. The only answer is to go get it back if you feel jilted. Great channel. Keep it going and continued luck on your great season thus far.

    Well done Tyler! I can't relate to that feeling! I always feel like, "Oh wait is my power meter not working properly??" Haha I always felt like that when I first started sitting on 350w. I just did my first FTP of the season. Broke 4.1w/kg but can't wait to stomp it later on in the season! Keep up the momentum! You're destroying!

    • @MishMash95

      Haha, this has happened to me a few times recently, somehow beat my 4 minute power by 30w (from 340 to 370w) and now my 2 minute power by 40w (400w to 440w) and my first thought was whether my power meter was still working correctly. It is quite hard to tell as both were on climbs and the times did improve, but I had lost 3kg of weight as well :S!

    Great numbers . But consider one thing: Watts Uphill are always higher than on the flat and on the indoor trainer. To make it really comparable I do ihe test on the trainer. I have 342 indoor, 353 outdoor flat and 367 uphill,

    • @ChazTurmon
      @ChazTurmon 6 років тому +1

      roland H Eh...not really. I’ve been able to reproduce the same watts across all three that you laid out above.

    • @pope406
      @pope406 6 років тому +2

      Than you are the exception. But we are a pretty large training group and it is the same for everybode: read that one for start: blog.trainerroad.com/ftp-testing-outdoors-vs-indoors/

    • @ChazTurmon
      @ChazTurmon 6 років тому +1

      roland H Honestly, if you have a solid bike fit, you should be able to reproduce your 20min power on both flat and climbs. As for trainer riding, I agree it can be tough. Like a TT bike, your muscles adapt to trainer riding and learn to function as efficiently as outdoors. Definitely controlling your environment with fans makes an extremely huge difference. Also, hydration is so key to indoor riding. If you can keep hydrated and your core temp down, no reason why you can’t nail your 20min power indoors as well. Today I hit my best 90min power of the year indoors during a zwift race. I used my quarq which is what I use outdoors. So it’s possible to reproduce outdoor numbers inside.

    • @ChazTurmon
      @ChazTurmon 6 років тому

      roland H I get that. But at the same time, you could get to the point where they’re all level. I’ve found a number of people can reproduce the same numbers regardless of where they’re riding.

    Great effort!!! I just did a ~20min test 2 days ago (5.1w/kg darn!) and used a segment just like you! Just a suggestion, what you can do is just ride the 17min segment all out then use the Monod Critical Power Curve (P=CP+AWC/T) to calculate out to 20mins. Obviously it's more accurate to use a segment as close to 20mins as possible. A 2min segment wouldn't be very representative. You can find your CP and AWC values on the cycling power lab website, or calculate your own values in a spreadsheet. This method will get you within a watt or two of your 20min power.

    Always a fun watch, Tyler. Thank you and congrats on both the KOM and FTP accomplishments - Awesome!
    Hoping you'll shed some light on your recent nutrition changes in an upcoming video. Being plant-based, that part is always of interest, especially given the overlay with your big jump in fitness.
    Also, can you sometime talk a little bit about structured training programs? I've never done one but hearing you say you doubled your fitness in ~3mo is quite appealing. What does that look like, involve, etc? I just have zero idea, not trying to get you to unload all the deets of yours, specifically, but want to understand how it happens, pros/cons of that training period, and which aspects of your fitness are being measured. I did my first few races ever in the past 2mo and got lit up each time, so you've made me curious.
    As always, thank you for sharing!

    Maybe I missed that part somehow but estimating one's FTP by taking the max 20 min effort minus 5% (that is open to discussion as well) in most models requires a period of "pre-exhaustion" of riding above one's presumed FTP effort. Usually something like max 5 min effort with 10 mins of recovery in between. Not looking for a quarrel, just thought that it may require some explanation. Anyhow, good riding up that hill and I am really looking forward to your thoughts on fasted riding.

      for some reason, that important bit has been forgotten. still it works if you are comparing your results. it probably why anybody who is 5w/k isnt pro. also seated on a trainer will lower the test for most as well.

      Just checked his Strava link and he did fair bit of riding, even if at moderate wattage, before the featured trial. Still not meeting requirements for a standardized FTP test but getting closer, possibly close enough for any of us, amateurs.

    I am in the middle of watching your Tony Wolf Video and I just have the urge to remind you of a question I just heard you ask, Tony's response is priceless! Vegan Cyclist "So do I learn more when I listen to podcasts while riding or am I too hypoxic to remember anything? Tony Wolf "You have a smaller percentage of blood going to your brain during exercise."
    I feel like I should of done a hard ride before watching that video so I could retain more of the information. Words like "hyperchriphy" that I will have to Google.

    Congrats on a solid result / achievement. I am curious how your FTP grew over the years based on training stress and dietary changes.

    Great job dude! Awesome beats and graphic overlays too!! Just wondering when your next triathlon is? Would be cool to see you do a half ironman where the bike is 90km long so plenty of time to catch up from the swim haha
