The Tarrasque Makes Nerdarchy Get Salty With This DM| GM 911
    Original GM 911 post
My four players (Paladin,Druid,Fighter/Barbarian, and Wizard/Bard) have recently been offered a job by the king. He want the players to train the armies so they can stand up to their northern neighbors who don't have many magic users but an army over 500,000 strong. However the barbarian wants to test the might of the two kingdoms and issued a challenge whoever kills the biggest monster from the mountain range nearby the two kingdoms will gain their loyalty.
However there is a problem as the mountain range is known to have a Tarrasque nest. I rolled a D20 to see if they disturbed the nest now the northern kingdom royally pissed off the nest since they stole one of their eggs. the northern kingdom is supposed to be the big bad of most of this arc. My players now know they rolled pissed them off since they were on a flying carpet watching the whole thing. The soldiers who took the egg are already halfway across the land while the southern armies are killing a hydra. Neither kingdom can take them down even if they work together how do i fix this? BTW my players are lvl 16 my paladin says hes going to go help them no matter what while the rest of the party wants nothing to do with this how do i fix this MAJOR mistake?
    please help, Samual

I've always maintained a motto as a DM over the decades I have been doing it that fits here: "If a level 1 group wants to enter the ancient dragons lair - I will be that dragon for you!" Just because the group can't handle a situation doesn't mean that those situations don't exist. If they poked the tarrasque - it's time to be the beast. On that note: There will be defenders outside the player group who will more than likely also beat this creature back. Nothing is stopping a more powerful group also aiding in the fight. It's not like this tarrasque only effects the group. Whole kingdoms will be affected. Other races will be affected. Other group will eventually aid in the beat-down that will be required.

I agree, your party isn't the only one that would be against a tarrasque, there would be possibly a lords army or some super powerful adventuring group that came back to their home after hearing about this problem, maybe near the end leave it to the players once they have powers but they might never be truly alone

Yeah...when a Terrasque is involved, it immediately becomes the most important thing going on. All other plots and plans dissolve before it.

... Unless there is some other big bad that is summoning Tarrasques, and/or is feeding weakened Tarrasques power so that said big bad can use them to take over the world. Then, and only then, is there a plot that still remains slightly more important. Slightly.

Bluecho4 Once you introduce a Tarrasque into the campaign, your campaign will be over. Either the party gets wiped by the Tarrasque, or they beat the Tarrasque and nothing else is a threat anymore because there's nothing stronger than a Tarrasque.

TheLangenator My DM created a giant blue dragon-like creature that a Tarrasque was eaten by in a similar fashion to a T-rex eating a velociraptor :P That thing is only one of the many big bads in our campaign, and the Tarrasque didn’t even try to fight back, it just tried desperately to run.

You have a Tarasque and a Hydra. "Let them fight." I'm not sure what that's supposed to accomplish other than more destruction but it was the plan they came up with in that last Godzilla movie.

It worked a lot better than the original plan of just feeding the monsters their favourite food, personally I'd just get someone to use bag of holdings to get rid of the tarasques.

Also, for the GM in question, I would like to point out that as long as YOU haven't made it hatch yet, it doesn't have to be a tarrasque. They could think it's a tarrasque and it hatches into a tyrannosaur or something. As a GM you have control over things like that.

xselinisx I didn't read anything in the post that said the Tarrasque was awake or that anyone had even seen one. It could be that people are misinformed about a Tarrasque in the north, or they could have found the wrong nest and it is something entirely different.

He is saying to "replace" the Tarrasque with a t-rex so the egg is also a t-rex egg. Basically a case of mistaken identity unless there are lots of t-rexes in campaign i could see how people who have seen it would mistake it for a "legendary" creature in storys.

The northern kingdom is the big bad right? They have the egg, and I think I read a comment about the kingdom being ruled by an ancient lich. Have the lich use the egg in making a potion that give his 100 best warriors a portion of the Tarrasque's power and create a new monstrous race- The Tarrasqui. Give them the roar like a dragonborn, horn, bite and claw attacks like the minotaur, the tabaxi, lizardfolk. Give them a smaller version of the Tarrasque's abilities and also the ability to damage it. Now you can have them fight it, and if they win no matter how many of them die the lich can start over with the remains of mama tarrasque. Grand problems can have grand solutions, especially if you add a little insanity.

This is a good opportunity for a time jump or starting a new campaign. You could ask your players what would they do about the Terrasque and if nothing then do a year time jump or continue the campaign in another land and have them hear about the events and when they return have the the kingdoms demolished but alive and are still at war with one another fighting over the ruins and it could be that they still need to choose a side or stop them from killing themselves off.

Have the Tarrasque pull a Jason Voorhees and devour them when they're planning to flee. They have to then take it down from the inside, going after critical parts of its anatomy and smaller horrors it's eaten and not digested. After it dies, they're heroes - and have to pick a side.

  • @AbsoluteMongoloid

In cases like these, I think it best to weaken the monster (in this case, have the Northern Armies get crushed, but allow them to wound the Tarrasque to make it weak enough for the party), then give the party an epic finale. They are the last stand; standing between civilization and total annihilation. It would be a very satisfying ending, but if you want to go further, you could cause a power vacuum to appear thanks to the destruction of the Northern Armies, with the South gaining strength and momentum against the North. I know it's been a couple months since the vid was posted, but this is too cool to pass up.

Have the other kingdom capture another Hydra and start cutting off heads until it can fight the Tarrasque.
Hear me out. A tarrasque has 676 HP. A Hydra does an average of ten damage per head, so I'd say go for 100 heads (1000 damage a turn) to account for the fact the hydra needs to roll a 17 to hit the tarrasque. The hydra just barely has a higher initiative than the tarasque with +1 dex.
A hydra with 1000 heads probably won't be that big of an issue against two large armies armed with long bows, because the hydra's health (176) doesn't increase per head.

When a problem like this occurs, I think a good question to ask is "why not both?" I think a way to seer the campaign back on course could be to have the most powerful mages in the Northern Kingdom (under the king's orders of course) attempt to mind-control the terrasque, and sick it on the other surrounding kingdoms; because they knew that would happen all along and it was part of their master plan. This way there's still a big bad Northern Kingdom while keeping the threat of the terrasque alive. As Dave said earlier, there's a 3rd edition archetype called Waker of the Beast, so you could incorperate them into the campaign, either as a 3rd party, or directly as the villains within the Northern Kingdom.

  • @Arkanoid1212

This is a pretty drastic scenario. Still, i can't help myself picturing scenes like for example this one: A drow sorcerer who had to abandon his position in Sorcere because of a family feud approaches an elven druid. The druid looks at him and goes "oooh, of all the people pleeease not this guy". The sorcerer begins "I overheard a silly rumor the other day and we might have to talk" "Is it true..." "from where?" "since when does it breed?" "how can we tell?" "where do we have too look?" And the Druid is just: "We?!" Could be much simpler, of course and players do as they please but it has potential for possibly unfolding an epic story arc. Hands down, i think degrading a Tarrasque to a combat encounter is not doing it justice. This is up to the players, of course and ultimately the DM. Pretty difficult passing a 17 wis saving throw in any case.

  • @letsplaypros1

Ok so Im seeing people get confused about what is going on so i should clarify what is going on. The northern kingdom is a kingdom based around the Vikings so alot of barbarians (this is where my barbarian grew up actually) and other martial warriors. The southern kingdom was based on Magnostadt from Magi kindom of magic so there are alot of mages/casters. Also the paladin wants to help the northern kingdom and defeat the tarrasque. The other three don't want to. And the reason the southern and northern kingdoms wont help each other is because the southern is ruled by an Ancient Golden Dragon while the northern kingdom is ruled by an Ancient lich.
There actually already was a cult based around the Tarrasque, this is because in my game they were the fist of Erathis( my paladin is actually a paladin of Erathis and now wants him to destroy the mother), and every time a civilization pissed her off she sent them out. Eventually the cult thought the tarrasque were gods and started worshiping them. when Erathis found out she set them against the cults civilization then made the tarrasque mortal. this is why there are more than one and in fact there are three more of them sleeping in the mountain range nearby the mother whose egg got stolen. Once they sense the mother is gone they are going to start waking up. Then....destruction, pure unadulterated destruction. Then they may go to sleep or run around.
So even if they defeat the mother they are going to have to deal with the other three eventually. they have 2 years to solve this problem. and find a way to put the mother to sleep before shes fully awakened. In my game when a tarrasque begins waking up they roar and there is a massive earthquake. So does this change things or what? im still a bit confused on what to do about this.

If I'm reading this correctly, there are really 2 core challenges at work.
First, most of the PCs want nothing to do with this level of conflict.
Second, even if they did, how will they deal with four tarrasques?
There are a variety of ways to address any of those, and some of those aforementioned "ways" include the "Magic McGuffins which Do the Thing Desired of Plot Progression," be they stones (to contain, delay, subdue, eject to another plane of existence, etc.), weapons, powerful entities, or whatever.
If the PCs don't want to fight the tarrasque(s), then it's either time to start a new campaign, or the party better find a way to make sure the tarrasque(s) don't awaken. Return the egg seems like the most obvious solution, though it seems the party may not want to do that themselves if they want nothing to do with the tarrasque(s) in the first place.
Also, if most of the PCs don't want to get involved, it's important to know if the *players* still do. If they do, then either the PCs can follow suit (and cancel the apocalypse), or the players can roll up a group of intrepid (and probably crazy) adventurers to return the egg. Meanwhile, the 16th level PCs can be plotting or moving events at a larger scale.
If the PCs DO want to deal the the tarrasque(s), then you have an epic level campaign in the making. Even if/though they awaken, it doesn't mean all of the tarrasques (or any of them, honestly) have to emerge from that point in the mountain range. Maybe they go burrowing underground, and come out of the ocean's depth someplace more remote. Maybe they know the egg is gone, but not where to find it, so they separately go to the corners of the world. Literally anything is possible.
Further, there's the egg itself. Gotta figure out what to do with that, including how durable and/or delicious it is. Cannot the apocrypha of the cult have ancient scrolls which include means to transform such an unborn creature, or to use its ichor to enchant items of great power?
It's really just a question of...what sounds like the most fun to everyone at the game table. Then the solution is to just do that. That probably sounds like an over-simplification, but I think it's the answer.

    • @maromania7
      @maromania7 7 років тому

I think the main issue is that you're forcing a plot. if the PCs don't want to that's one thing, you can find a way to make them want to save thier own lives pretty easily. but if the PLAYERS don't then you're going to lose your hobby. If your players don't want to do this, this isn't what they think is fun, then they're going to stop. there is no way you can 'make' them like it, there is no way you can make them do it. they will either continue playing while finding new ways to destroy your plot out of spite, or they will stop playing. Because nobody wants to play with a DM who doesn't care about thier desires.
You threw a Tarrasque in the mix. if you didn't want your sideplots destroyed, you shouldn't have thrown it in. if you were playing a different sort of game and randomly turned it into an apocalypse scenario from left feild, not thier fault for not liking it. that one guy likes it, but one person doesn't make the party. and in a Tabletop, the party is what matters. You forced the plot in. you can force it out just as quickly. You're the GM, you can do anything you want.
look at the tarrasque's stats. it's not as big a deal as it was in earlier games, an army could probably take it out. and you're the GM, you can make them take it out. if you want if to have consequences, have them Northerners take them out due to crazy lich magic and now they have to deal with crazed supersoldiers or monsters that don't have a tarrasque to kill anymore but want blood. there's plenty of fun solutions to it. but this is only an issue if you force a plot they don't want, or knock them out of a plot they do want.

Tarrasque was seriously nerfed in this edition. I really don't think it's THAT big a threat anymore and a standard nations army could take it out. If this were a strategy game, I would let the thing wake up and do it's best to take down the northern kingdom and hope that they either damage it enough for my guys to take down or have their entire army distracted with this thing so either way my guys could just waltz in and take over with no real hassle.

It's suppose to be a low magic campaign and they have immunity to non magic weapons, an army won't really do much. Some of them might have magic weapons but it would be rare. It has frightful presence so sending cannon fodder isn't even that effective.

I think what i would do is have it that all of the Tarrasque eggs but one are stillborn, but one does survive, and the party can then train the Young Tarrasque to fight mama Tarrasque. I mean it would still be a 1/4th as good Tarrasque, but i would make it so the party does have some form of help, and maybe allow both kindoms to back them up with siege weapons and have it that the Tarrasque can take damage from only these kinds of nonmagical weapons. Or have it that the siege weapons are magical.

A Druid should know as much about a tarrasque as a Wizard...they are nature's reset button after all. A Druid should actually have a chance of talking it out of a rampage in my opinion.

The biggest problem I have with that is: the nest and the eggs. What, fricking eggs, people?! It's a Tarrasque, or rather THE Tarrasque. There's only one and it's pretty much unkillable even on epic levels (which 5ed doesn't have by the way, at least in the form of true powerful heroes like in the 3ed.).

  • @gambent6853
    @gambent6853 7 років тому

Don't worry Samual, we all make mistakes in our campaign that we wish we could take back. Like Dave and Ted said though, this is a great opportunity. There are so many ways to use this.
At this point the party may not want to deal with it, but a Tarrasque is a big deal. I would kind of do what Ted said. Defeat the Knights of the Northern Kingdom that currently hold the egg of the Tarrasque. Return it and hope that the Tarrasque does not wake up.
However, it sounds like you have already woken multiple Tarrasques, or at least royally pissed them off. If this is the case, let the rest of the party flee. Go into a narrative with your players as to what they do when these Tarrasques destroy everything around them. Have it that the party comes back together either immediately after the tragedy or some time after when the dust has settled, and a new broken society is born. Perhaps the survivors have heard of the Barbarian that goaded the kingdoms to destruction and wish to get revenge on them. All in all, there are endless possibilities and it's not the end of your game. Just go with it!

    @uzziya6392 6 років тому

Even if the Tarrasque is awake and storming towards the nearest undefended village that's a good story element.
The players are in no position to take on a Tarrasque. The Northern Kingdom was supposed to be the bad guy and now that they're being eaten and the Tarrasque is the bad guy. There is now a barely populated wasteland to the North with a Tarrasque roaming around slowly working it's way to the other kingdoms. *That* is your ticking clock.
If the Tarrasque isn't active it's:
"You have 20 years until the Tarrasque eats everyone in the Northern Kingdom. You're going to have to deal with this at some point"
If the Tarrasque is active it's:
"You have 20 years before the Tarrasque finished eating everyone in the Northern Kingdom and starts heading for where you are. You're going to have to deal with this at some point"
You can even spring the Tarrasque on your PC's early. Say lv16 a magical experiment goes wrong and awakens the Tarrasque or a beam of light destroys the top of a mountain so that the Tarrasque can now more easily cross into the Southern Kingdoms. Poor planning from DM's is easy to work around. Being inflexible can just ruin the game for everyone.

When I first started to play D&D the rest of my party were a bunch of murder hobos. One was really horrible, so my DM decided that the gods were upset and decided to unleash a turrasque. The party responded by doing what they have always been doing. They are all chaotic neutral and I was neutral. It got to the point were I worked with them but was secretly planned their demise. The game ended because the DM literally said he was too lazy to continue. And that's how I became the designated DM.

I am a strong believer in story first. Even when I am the player I want to see the GMs vision.
In the case of player interference I have made backup upon redundent back up for any important step.
WW2 is a great example WW1 was going on and mean while as the Kaiser was falling and being defeated we had that faceless minion that did not yet strike fear into the world in the form of Hitler... Then of course he rose to power and helped the stage for WW2 to become complete... But his back up vilian for the "final war" was Stalin for time at the rushin border (puns intended).
Sure the northern army may be ragged but 5% of the population is still alive and low and behold the southern nation takes on the refugees... 5 years down the line that group held a vengeful heart for he remembered who set up the hunt he has spent his time and used his contacts and connections well; despite bankrupting his mass fortune to do so he has set up the perfect trap for the party... can they survive the most unorthodox battle you can think of with a group (I assume) built to be brawn (DPS) and not Brain?

  • @mikegould6590
    @mikegould6590 7 років тому

    Dave's right. Be flexible.
Secondly, if you ADD an element into the game, there's always a chance it will be interacted with.
If you want to avoid dealing with a Tarrasque, don't add it.
Now you have an apocalypse on your hands that you made and you want it to stop.
Well, either add options to stop it or let it play out and build a post-apocalyptic setting.
    Welcome to Dark Sun.
And now you have the players play the descendants of the original characters.
Or you may want another big-bad deal with this big bad. Kraken, arch-Lich, Illithid mothership...
Stop time by the hand of a God and give the players a quest to rewrite time.
    Lots of options

Hey, Nerdarchists. I have an idea for a tarrasque-based adventure (obviously for a higher level group). The tarrasque has been awakened by the god of destruction to devour all creation. The gods bestowed upon the heroes (after some trials) a musical instrument that puts the tarrasque to sleep. The gods return it back to the earth to sleep another thousand years.
What do you think of the scenario? Yay, or nay?

They have them, they have a 4 pc´s, give them all a +1 Crossbow, 7,000 Bolts and thats it. it will take time, but they will hit frequently enough to only take about 3 hours to kill the terrasque, oh jeah, ps. thats for lvl 1 characters, as for lvl 16, i´d say it takes 30 minutes to kill that thing with 1.000 Bolts.

I need to know. Can a monk use Quivering Palm to kill a tarrasque? If the monk can get through the legendary saves then there's no reason it couldn't, but it just seems a bit too easy. As long as the monk doesn't stay close to it, like if someone cast Fly on him, then the fight might be really easy.

Why is the group so divided in the first place. I find it crazy that anyones first oppinion in the initial problem is to split the team of 4... I mean I am glad that jerk Barbarian is not on my team... how about not being involved in two nations wars unless you have chosen a side already.
OK getting past the bigger problem the smaller one of the Tarrasque is not that bad. 500,000 what Lv1's I doubt it so guide it up to the northern army and let them kill it. it the southern nation knows how not to be incompetent then they will make the best of this situation and help slay the beast so they can indebt the northern nation. Mean while the party can help with the kill and gain many choice prizes for such a major battle being eased by you... wins all around.

I'm surprised the comments aren't full of people screaming about la tarasq not laying eggs because there's only one - that's the response I've learned to expect when someone mentions tarasq eggs.
