- Will Avowed be another Redfall? Sitting down with Kirk from @whatsnewvideogames to discuss one of the bigger Xbox games releasing this year as the Avowed release date is set for later in 2024.
After the last Xbox showcase I argued that the Avowed gameplay looked better, but Kirk doesn't seem to think so. While the Avowed combat does look clunky, I am hopeful improvements can be implemented before launch.
Avowed is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. Avowed takes place in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity, in the world of Eora. The game is scheduled to be released in Q3/Q4 2024 for Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

I love Kirk's camera. It either makes it look like he's broadcasting from Mars or some kind of alternate dimension.

The only reason I can see as to why this game and outer worlds is first person only, is because it’s harder to do third person animations. But I don’t like that and the whole point of an rpg is the element of imagination and fantasy. You want to be a knight or assassin. You get new armor and weapons and you can even customize how you look. All of that just to never see your armor or character in game after the character creation screen. Third person games are popular for a reason and they fit certain genres better than others. Why would I care what armor I have if I can’t see it? In first person it just becomes a bunch of numbers. Why would I care about romance if I can’t see my character too? Why would I get invested in the story if my character not only doesn’t talk, but I also can’t see them? Xbox is doing it with Indiana Jones too although it looks like they’re handling it better there. These studios need to really think about what the consumer wants from a certain game before making it third or first person.
Obsidian needs to stick with 2D games.

I must say though, in regards to tale end of the discussion; I do disagree with Kirk in that, I 100% believe video games need to justify their existence. Saying that they don't, is completely ignoring the economically realities of what it takes to bring games to market!

I think it’s going to be an okay game. 7.5-8.5 game. Doesn’t do anything amazing
i agree with the mele combat. it looks very stiff.
of the two major wrpgs comeing out i feel i'm more likly to play dragon age dreadwolf then avowed.

I don’t think so. I think it’s gonna be the start of a franchise not every franchise starts off with a perfect game.
I kind of get the strategy if flood the market with a lot of smaller games that score mid at best. But that to me sounds like something someone who is already leading the market should do. Like just keep the install base happy.
But i think this wont work for xbox since they are so far behind. They need the big titles to first pull them into the ecosystem then after you have them you keep them with a lot of smaller filler titles. I just dont see anybody flocking to xbox or gamepass for these kind of games.
I feel the game has been poorly marketed and will be outerworlds but fantasy setting which is fine,
Obsidian are great game developers so i don't think it will flop, but It will go under the radar and be an underrated gem like outerworlds do remember they are only a small team
I agree about the first person combat looking weak. It always does. Can’t think of a game that does it super well. Third person perspective for this would be welcome.
Bioshock was amazing in FP
Obsidian has some good gems from the past, but this game looks low effort -- basically, Game Pass effort. FallOut New Vegas was a great achievement building off of what Bethesda did. This looks like they did the same thing just with a hi-res Skyrim mod. They seem to be losing their identity like most companies that get absorbed into MS. Once the existing IPs get milked, they'll just fade away along with their IP as many have already .

arnt thier usual fare and avowed looks mid. i'm only intrested in outer worlds 2 attm.
it makes me worried about inexile as theyy have not annoced any games since the buy out.
The art style, and tone really doesn't help it's case. Neither does the janky animations.
they're an overrated developer really. they should stick to 2D games. New Vegas is overrated a bit but they built it on Fallout 3's engine and assets. Removed from that, their games have been mediocre mostly. Avowed looks bad, and that is with people giving them tons of grace and overrating them due to current social media hate of Bethesda. This game would be badly trashed just two years ago.
At this point we should not have any more,expectations from microsoft's first party developed,games.
It’s definitely still a wait and see. This kind of combat in first person has never worked for me. Personal preference for sure. It’s extremely hard to convey weighty attacks, it’s impossible to get fun, flourishy attacks. Like the bit where the player kicks a mob just looks terrible. It’s just a foot coming up from nowhere and smacks the enemy in what looks more akin to a punch than a weighty 300 kick. It looks terrible. Let word “looks”.
If game is good I play game. Though I *might* still pass even if it’s good just cause of personal preference.
Midget lizards with swords, they hyped it up and I was like what? Game looks like trash. Only Starfield, Hellblade & Stalker 2 looks worth owning an Xbox for so it's still a no for me. I'd love to have even 5 reasons to buy an xbox
Probably not another Redfall, but it won't be another Skyrim or even another Fallout New Vegas either.
They built new vegas on top of Fallout 3, not much greatness since. Outer Worlds was mediocre in most peoples opinion and Avowed does not look very good. It looks like Skyrim minus tons of races, items, game world, third person view, plus graphics overhaul.

As someone who loves Pillars of Eternity and doesnt care for The Outer Worlds i have negative hype surrounding the game. Pillars is a serious universe so im really worried rhe writers who gave us ToW will fuck up Avowed woth Marvel style gimmicks and whirky characters.
they need to go back to 2D games.

Almost evrey studio ms buys turns to crap I would not be surprised Starfield Bethesda's worst sp game rated by critics and fans alike. We shall see if Obsidian does not fall under that banner we shall see!
The word you're looking for is cheap! The game looks cheap! Like MS did not allocate a very large budget for the development of this game and to me, that's the Game Pass effect. I feel like this is the price we as gamers are going to keep paying for the "privilege" of getting Xbox 1st party games day one in a subscription service.
Outer worlds looked cheap. Obsidian is a AA developer.
@digranes1976 Outer Worlds was in development prior to Obsidian being bought by MS. I can forgive that game being what it was, but when you're backed by a trillion dollar publisher, no studio should be calling themselves AA, and certainly no game should be looking like this! At some point, you gotta level up! Great recent examples, look at what Housemarque did with Returnal and Skill Up did with Stellar Blade.

I switched to xbox in this gen and ngl I think obsidian games are the only thing xbox has going for it rn i enjoyed grounded so much so i am gonna trust the developers with this one
This guy is sleeping on Hellblade 2? Yes Hellblade 2 is at 30fps yes but the combat and the visuals look top tier. Is this guy a Pony?
See I don’t understand his stance because he loves outer worlds which is a great game but it’s colorful like avowed I think he has a weird stance on it I can tell you I would play this over Skyrim
Skyrim without mods at all is mid.

Avowed has lost my interest. I was expecting something more mature and realistic based on the first trailer. I hope someone finds it compelling. I'm sure a lot of people put a lot of work into it. Not a fan of first person games. The AI for these lizard men looks bad.

Bg3 is cool but the witcher, mass effect, dragonage orgins, cyberpunk story telling is much better imo.
Bethesda dont make good story nor do i feel obsidian does. The outer worlds was extremely boring and repetitive to me.
IDK the smaller stuff seems to work better for xbox so this game could do well. Also why do people still care about reviews it's all bs anyway , half the time it's just asshats inserting whatever pol stance they take and less about the game. I think this will be an 83 on metacritic, the devs are good but they tend to not pull it all off as well as they should even more so with the company behind them.
To be fair it doesn't take that much to be better than bg3, all it takes is to be decent and you're a 200 times better than that trash
Skyrim looks like crap and the combat was horrible back then when it came out. I don't think I ever beat it. It had fun times just was horrible combat. Story was worse then oblivion.
This game will suck. Everything Xbox does is so mid it’s unbelievable. It’s just classic streamware. Loads of games but they are all just mid to terrible.
