Just wanted to thank you for what was a detailed and very informative review. I have always been a fan of fine pens, using a 0.5mm Pilot black ballpoint pen in my day to day note taking at work. Having just purchased a Rocketbook, I think I'll be continuing on with the same 0.5mm tip size with the Pilot FriXion pen. Another appealing factor of the 0.5mm is the actual physical pen size/thickness. I have never understood how people can like to hold a really thick pen, such as that offered with the 1.0mm tip FriXion pens. The 0.38mm tip pen is appealing with the thinnest actual physical pen size, but as you have noted, the 0.5mm's overall excellent results make it the one for me.
I got interested in the concept of reusable notebooks when I began getting reMarkable ads in my UA-cam feeds. I like the idea of a reusable tablet but I don't need another e-reader and the cost is exorbitant. After watching one of your previous videos, as well as this one, I've decided to order the Rocketbook Flip. Your videos are top-notch, professional, interesting, and to-the-point; a pleasure to watch and learn!
Great comparison review. I actually always prefer the 0.7 due to the feeling and the darker results. Btw, love that Marathon (Canadian-made) watch. You have good taste.
Thanks Erika, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. It means a lot that you took the time to let me know that all that time and effort was useful!
You’re welcome Jake. I’m still torn between Notes on my iPad Pro and Rocketbook. I use them both, and I have two Rocketbook’s, the Mini and the Executive.
Ahh... Ya, I feel the same way too sometimes. There is something nice about using an iPad. I used to use it far more (before I got my Rocketbooks) and with the GoodNotes App - I loved that moving window haha ✌️ Have a great day 👍
I suspected that 0.5s we're lasting longer... But up nearly twice as long. That's fantastic for those of us trying to limit our carbon footprint. Which is one reason why I still use my Rocketbook almost daily despite my preference for the texture of pencil on paper.
Thank you for this! My sister got me a Rocketbook as a back-to-school gift, and sent me a set of 0.7mm Clicker pens. My handwriting is a bit messy, so some letters run together, so I wanted to know if I could switch to 0.5mm refills without having to buy new pens. You answered my question! I also watched several of your videos before I received the Rocketbook, so I went ahead and bought a small sprayer and some waterbrush pens because I am CONSTANTLY making mistakes...your channel has been a huge help! 😊
Thanks for taking the time to let me know how helpful you find my content. It means a lot. You're very welcome 👍 I hope you're enjoying the Rocketbook ✌
I really appreciate this video. My Rocketbook finally arrived and I was about to buy some pens and wasn't sure which to get...now I do. Definitely the 0.5m for me!
I have only used Rocketbook since Christmas 2020. I have only used the 0.7 pens. I have theorized that the 0.5 would be most desirable because other regular pens I have used have always found me preferring that size. Upon hearing that a .38 was available for ROCKETBOOK and that the body was smaller had me excited. I was excited because the other bodies don’t have a good home when only carrying the notebook. I wondered too if the point might be a bit sharp for paper safety. So, your report supports what I suspected; that I would probably like the 0.5 size. I’ll just have to learn to keep up with the larger body size. Thank you for your evaluation of these pens.
I went to 0.5mm as the 0.7mm ran out far too quickly. I’m really pleased with the decision, as I always buy refills anyway. You saying the visual quality is your preference also helps my confirmation bias 😁
In case nobody knew this, if your toddler gets ahold of your book (luckily with the right pens.. this time 😭) and switches pages before the ink dries, it causes it to pool and leaves stains. 🙃
Great video! I have a love hate relationship with my fricXion pens. So many pens and refills bought and used up or stopped working so soon after using. I’m hoping Pilot pulls it together better over time…
Thanks Suzanne 👍 I'm glad to hear that you enjoy my videos and that you think enough about the product to recommend them to your staff! I did the same ✌️
Another great video. This really helped out as I’m considering investing in a multi pen. I wanted to go with 0.38 since it’s the only one they (Jet Pens) have available at the moment in transparent for the body of the pen. However, it might be work forgoing to transparency for the 0.5 since I do want it to last long enough and I already have experience with the 0.5, which I enjoy. Thank you!
I mentioned that I wanted one on thanksgiving and never gave it a second thought and my sister got me one! She said she bought it like two days later 🥺
Outstanding video, great presentation of facts with lots of detail. I have learned a lot what type and size of pen to use... which was a topic in the back of my mind when deciding to go with this method of note taking.
I prefer the 0.4 point that fits the standard pens. I purchase them in packs of 3 on either JetPens or Amazon. Second choice would be the 0.5. The .38 is small of a pen for me to grip comfortably. Thank you for doing this video. Now I just need to test the markers and highlighters.
Please make a video testing different scenarios like leaving pages written with them in a hot environment (car for example) to see if it would accidentally erase or in an cold environment (idk maybe be a vent or something) to see if what you have erased would accidentally come back… I REALLY want to know if anything happens bc I was to use these in my Bible but kinda scared to lol
I'm a bit of a pen enthusiast, that said I haven't actually use this line of pens. I honestly didn't even know it was a thing until I started looking into these Rocketbooks. I tend to use .5mm and .7mm gel or liquid rollerball ink pens and I prefer fine or extra fine japanese nibs on my fountain pens. For general writing I like the .7 pens and if I need to sketch a portion of a blueprint or really pack some notes onto a page ( I don't like when notes spill over partially to another page, 2 full pages is ok though) I'll use the .5. I haven't used many pens finer than that but I don't think theres many that I would like due to the .5 being more scratchy that I want out of a ballpoint style pen. If/when I get one of these books I think I'll just have to buy a few packs of these pens in different sizes and colors and test them out. With the paper being smoother I might like the finer pen, and also being left handed the ink dry time is most certainly a consideration for me.
Thank you that was so useful, wish I’d watched this before buying my 0.7mm pens, but it sounds like I’ll use them up very quickly! Kudos on referring to refills, discovered that separately but great to reinforce in your videos, and also that 0.7 and 0.5 bodies can interchange, so will be buying 0.5mm refills. The drying time for the 0.7mm has also been a little annoying at times so with the 0.5mm drying time and its economy, it’s a no-brainier! Thanks again 😃👍
Thank you for taking the time to let me know you found this useful Kate. It's always nice to hear that someone finds value in my content. I'm glad that I could help you get more out of your Rocketbook experience. I did the same thing as you when I got my first Rocketbook as well - using only 0.7mm pens for the first year or so, but once I discovered the 0.5mm ones and did this test to compare their lifespan, I haven't looked back. Thanks again!
Thank you for this vid. i stumbled upon the RocketBook Mini Bundle for 17 euro and went looking around what refills would cost and what the whole ecosystem is all about. i use Big idea Design Titanium pens. And my "Ti Arto" works with 880 refills including the Frixion refills. Currently i'm participating in their "Base Line Bolt Action Pen" Kickstart but i'm thinking of canceling that and just buying their more expensive non kickstart Slim Bolt Action pen because it can also work with the FriXion refills.... Big Thumbs up from me.. Greetings from The Netherlands..
Thank you for this video. I use 0.5mm for a reminder or heading and 0.38mm when writing a lot, it dry out quickly and for me it looks like I am using a pencil. Both pen my favorite.
Thanks for commenting and sharing what you use 👍 I use the 0.7 and 0.5 in the same way you use the 0.5 and 0.38 pens. I used to use only 0.7 but I’m glad I discovered the 0.5 because they do last quite a bit longer.
I like your videos very much; they are always detailed and tremendously helpful. I do hope that you can experiment with turning your music down to very very very low background, if not eliminating it. I know that music overlay is pervasive on UA-cam but I find it to be Very distracting, relentless, and exhausting. I am probably a minority in that regard, so I will just try to get in and out as fast as possible. All the best to you and thank you for your detailed videos. You have a great calm voice.
Great review! Jake, what do you think of the Frixion ball 4 colour multi pen for Rocketbooks? Thought of purchasing it mainly bcos it’s more convenient😅
There are BLS-FRP4 refills that are 0.4mm wide, regular large capacity like 0.5 or0.7 , but you cannot buy them easily unless you live in Japan or order it from Aliexpress
Even 7 seconds drying time seems so long! :o I'd image i'd smear the text all the time, mostly when writing the next line, especially if i use the blade of my hand to stabillize the notebook if writing of a table or something?
Excelent! I love my 0.7 Frixion pens, but I'm constantly checking the ink level. I'll try the 0.5. I wonder why haven't they made a transparent grip version. It would be so useful. Cheers.
I like the .7 for the feel. I don't need very tight spacing though, and use the executive instead of letter size. Thanks for this great video! I might get some .5 refills if I need tight spacing after seeing this. It might help with the Panda RB.
I haven't found any drying out difference when using a clicker. It's a good question, but it hasn't been noticeable enough for me to test it explicitly 👍
I love my frixions but they just don’t last! I’ll be buying a 0.5 see if actually last longer, I’ve been using the sticks (absolute crap for their durability and no option for refill) and the 0.7 mm
Thank you! Very helpful! Wondering if one can use any other brand of erasable highlighters or it will ruin the pages? I own every friction pen and markers and l still find they are too think 🤷🏻♀️
Unfortunately, other erasable pens aren't endorsed by Rocketbook. Depending on the brand, how they achieve erasability can be quite different. If you are going to try something, you'll have to do so at your own risk, but you should be looking for something that is thermosensitive and water soluble in order to best match the FriXion erasable mechanism. Good luck. I haven't tried others yet, so be careful 🤞
So for the rocketbooks, it's best not to use the eraser that is on the Frixion pens and instead use the cloth? what is the best method for quickly erasing a mistake for that surface?
You can use the eraser occasionally, you just don't want to repeatedly use it in the same spot. If you can, try spraying water directly on one spot of the cloth, then take your finger from the other side and 'spot clean' a little more accurately. That's what I usually do 👍
Thank you for this video! I recently purchased (and received) my first Rocketbook along with a set of 0.7mm FrixionBall Clickers. Overall meh writing experience. Long story short, I ordered the 0.5mm FrixionBall (waited a week for them to arrive) tried them out and Wow, what a difference!
Having a hard time getting the .5mm refills on line especially black and green. So I had to switch to .7mm. If anyone is having the same issue let me know where I can find them. I tired Amazon and nothing?
Want to use the pen on paper. Can you help? I don't understand: the line will appear again when it's cold- will they appear again when it's getting warmer?
It will disappear when it is hot, so don’t leave it in a warm car, etc. or your notes may disappear. It is supposed to reappear when cooled down (freezer/fridge), but I’ve heard mixed results if a whole note disappears.
Thanks David! Unfortunately I didn't have a 1.0mm when I went to make the video - and given the drying/cartridge life of the 0.7mm I am not rushing to buy one... How do you find it? Does it take longer to dry than the 0.7?
@@JakeReevesVideo I've never really noticed any issues with the drying, but now I'll have to look ;) Whether it's a Rocketbook or paper note-taking, I use the thickest pens I can get my hands on.
Jake your videos have been really helpful to transition my note taking from tons of paper usage to rocket book. I almost went with a Remarkable and stumbled across you videos. I’m so thankful for you sharing your experiences
Hi Erika, yes you can. They just have to be from the FriXion line of products in order to work with the Rocketbook synthetic pages. I have a whole other video that talks about all of the pens, markers and highlighters available, which you can find in my 'Everything Rocketbook' playlist. Cheers!
I can’t say I’ve had my pens do that to me. Perhaps an issue with the mechanism. You can use the eraser, but I would recommend doing so sparingly and very lightly to avoid damaging the synthetic pages (I have a video about this). You’ll also want to wipe the residue from the eraser off the page before being able to write cleanly over the same spot… so it’s not ideal.
I’m thinking of purchasing the frixion LX pen and the one I found on Amazon specifically states “ball gel ink pen”. Would I be able to refill with an “extra fine point”? Would there be a gap and the end?
You should be fine as long as you are buying the FriXion 0.5 or 0.7mm cartridges. I used mine with a 0.5mm for years 👍 Having said that, there are some alternative very nice fully metal pens that fit the FriXion cartridges as well. I have a few videos about some. As long as the pen takes a Pilot G2 cartridge, it will take a FriXion cartridge ✌️
No. I don’t work for Rocketbook. Occasionally I’ve accepted products from them for review, but I mention that in the video when I’ve done so. They have never paid me to make a video about something - the only fees I get are through affiliate links. I hope this helps to clarify.
I don't know why but I stopped using rocketbook because all pens would barely work on the page. Just tried using the notebook again this year and bought a brand new 0.7mm pen that still doesn't work when writing. Does anyone know what gives?!
Hi some advice please? In a moment of absentmindedness I used a standard rollerball pen on my rocketbook instead of the frixion. I wiped it off and rubbed out (carefully) as much as I could but still have some remaining, are you able to advise what to do to remove permanent marks please? At least it wasn't a permanent marker! Thanks 🙂
Oh that's sad. Sorry to hear that Kate. Fortunately/unfortunately I haven't had that happen, so I'm afraid I can't offer any advice. I would reach out to Rocketbook directly, either through Facebook or their help email. Sorry I could be of more help.
@@JakeReevesVideo thanks and no worries, it's only a few lines on the page until I realised, and it's mostly gone and still legible to write over, but there's some residual marks which would be good to remove. I'll check it with them and get back if there's a solution (!). Cheers 🙂
@@JakeReevesVideo Hi Jake - the response from Rocketbook as promised, who were very quick in replying. I'll have a go at some point but with caution as they advise below :). I was wondering about alcohol and as hand santizer is in common use now that one is tempting! "You're not alone! We have heard from some of our customers who have used several remedies to remove ink from their pages. Some have been successful using rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, bleach on a cotton swab, nail polish remover or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove the ink from their page. Note that some of these customers have reported that it also removed the dots on their pages; so if you use it on a symbol, you may not be able to select that symbol on that particular page. Whichever method you choose, please test a small area of the page first."
Update (after a year): I don’t recommend using bleach or nail polish remover as it removes the surface of the page hence it’s no longer writeable as it is too shiny for ink to mark. Best option Is to wipe off the permanent ink as soon as possible so that it doesn’t have time mark the page, and this is where the hand sanitizer helps as it’s more gentle. This may leave some ghosting but better than shiny unwriteable surface!
Hello Rocketbook Users, I know Pilot has LX, but I'm looking for nice pens for meetings. Do you know any other Rocketbook compatible cartridge manufacturer which fits into regular, more elegant pens? The Pilot pens with this nonfigurative drawing and the cheap design...
I use the .5 for black but I like the colors available in the .7. There are more available in .7 than .5. I would prefer .5 if I could get all the same colors
New to Rocketbook, completely disillusioned. The pens don't leave sufficient ink cause the paper isn't paper and therefor the scans are terrible. I do much better with simple paper, pen and scanner and the paper all gets recycled. Your numbers for pages for life of pens in your video is just crazy unacceptable unless of course you are selling the ink and/or the pens. I'm assuming I will find Rocketbook is tied to Pilot in some way. EDIT: Turns out Bic owns them instead of Pilot. Very interesting, can Bic cut Pilot out of the Rocketbook ecosystem ?
Just wanted to thank you for what was a detailed and very informative review. I have always been a fan of fine pens, using a 0.5mm Pilot black ballpoint pen in my day to day note taking at work. What do you think of the 0.4 and 0.5 mm thinner "point" pens? I was thinking of getting the 0.4 as I feel it should last longer.
There are BLS-FRP4 refills that are 0.4mm wide, regular large capacity like 0.5 or0.7 , but you cannot buy them easily unless you live in Japan or order it from Aliexpress
I got some 0.4 refills in both synergy tip and needle tip. Really like them
Thanks Jake! My fav pen is the LX! I am using using the .7 at the moment. Are you using the .5 in your LX?
Nice choice Wayne 👍 Yes, I use the 0.5mm cartridge in my LX. I switched it shortly after getting the LX ✌️
Even 7 seconds drying time seems so long! :o I'd image i'd smear the text all the time, mostly when writing the next line, especially if i use the blade of my hand to stabillize the notebook if writing of a table or something?
My fav pen is 0.7, amazing.
It does write very smoothly 👍 nice choice 👌
Excelent! I love my 0.7 Frixion pens, but I'm constantly checking the ink level. I'll try the 0.5. I wonder why haven't they made a transparent grip version. It would be so useful. Cheers.
That would certainly be helpful 👍
.5 for black & notes. .7 for colouring and creating images. We say no to the .38.
Agreed 👍
Hi! Do you recommend using the FriXion synergy pens?
They look neat - I haven’t tried them yet, but just ordered some to try them 👍
I like the .7 for the feel. I don't need very tight spacing though, and use the executive instead of letter size. Thanks for this great video! I might get some .5 refills if I need tight spacing after seeing this. It might help with the Panda RB.
Thanks Sami 👍 I'm glad you liked the video
I like 0.5 pens for the reasons you mentioned. Can these pens dry out faster with a clicker though?
I haven't found any drying out difference when using a clicker. It's a good question, but it hasn't been noticeable enough for me to test it explicitly 👍
this was really helpful
I'm glad to hear that! Thanks for watching Jose ✌️
Jetpens carries all the Friction pens and refills in all colors and sizes, including the 1.0mm.
Thanks for informative video memo to self buy refills don’t throw away pen
You’re very welcome 👍
Any suggestions for Big Idea Ti Click Pens Frixion refills?
A link would be very helpful.
I love my frixions but they just don’t last! I’ll be buying a 0.5 see if actually last longer, I’ve been using the sticks (absolute crap for their durability and no option for refill) and the 0.7 mm
This is so great! Thank you!
You're welcome 👍 Thanks for watching ✌️
You're welcome Jocelyn 👍 I'm glad you found the video helpful and that it improved your Rocketbook experience. Thanks for watching! ✌️
Does the ink disappear on this paper, too?
Thank you for this.
You're very welcome ✌️
After how many hours the inks will be permanent and cannot be erased??
I have a whole video about this - look in my Everything Rocketbook playlist for the video about Ghosting ✌🏻
Hello Sir, can we use these pens for other rewritable notebooks like (infinity, infinote books etc).
how it is for left handed? wil it work?
Well done Jake---don't forget us 1.0 people! ;)
Hmm... Well I'm glad they work for you 👍
Great Video. Thank you.
Thanks Howard 👍 I'm glad that you liked it! Thanks for taking the time to let me know - It means a lot ✌️
So if I’m understanding you correctly, if I already own a .7 pen body, then I can buy .5 replacements and that will work fine?
Exactly - the ink cartridges are shaped the same, it’s just the tip that’s different so they will fit in the same pen bodies 👍
Jake your videos have been really helpful to transition my note taking from tons of paper usage to rocket book. I almost went with a Remarkable and stumbled across you videos. I’m so thankful for you sharing your experiences
Thanks Mike, I’m glad to hear that you’ve found them helpful!
Wait, can I use highlighters and colors with these notebooks? That's important. Black ink doesn't do everything.
Hi Erika, yes you can. They just have to be from the FriXion line of products in order to work with the Rocketbook synthetic pages. I have a whole other video that talks about all of the pens, markers and highlighters available, which you can find in my 'Everything Rocketbook' playlist. Cheers!
My pen would go in and out on me which ruined my experience maybe I was using it too long?
Also Don’t use the easer at all?
I can’t say I’ve had my pens do that to me. Perhaps an issue with the mechanism. You can use the eraser, but I would recommend doing so sparingly and very lightly to avoid damaging the synthetic pages (I have a video about this). You’ll also want to wipe the residue from the eraser off the page before being able to write cleanly over the same spot… so it’s not ideal.
Where can I buy 0.5 ink refills? I ordered some on amazon but most of them were faulty. Amazon loves to rip me off.
Perhaps try JetPens website. Sorry to hear that. I’ve been fortunate with my multipacks off Amazon so far 🤞
@@JakeReevesVideo I hope I didn’t jinx it for ya lol Thanks for the tip about JetPens, I’ll check it out! :)
Do you work for Rocket or are you sponsored by them?
No. I don’t work for Rocketbook. Occasionally I’ve accepted products from them for review, but I mention that in the video when I’ve done so. They have never paid me to make a video about something - the only fees I get are through affiliate links. I hope this helps to clarify.
I bought 05... when writing at medium/low speed it leaves wider trace than 07.
Would a frixion ink cartridge refill fit a d1 size pen??
I don't know why but I stopped using rocketbook because all pens would barely work on the page. Just tried using the notebook again this year and bought a brand new 0.7mm pen that still doesn't work when writing. Does anyone know what gives?!
I just watched several of your videos, I tried to order from the Rocketbook from their site directly but your 15% discount code did not work.
Waiting to get a new code. Hoping it comes soon 🙏
Code is updated now 👍✌
Did you have another new code?
New code has been updated 👍✌
I like the 0.5
Same 👍 I was already using it most, but going through making this video help solidify it as my go-to ✌️
I’ve been looking for a rocketbook flip that has blank pages instead of dotted or lined, is there one that exists?
Yes, the flip does have a blank version. I have one in the executive size 👍
@@JakeReevesVideo thank you!!
You're very welcome 👍
I orderd the 0.7 Pens in the colar variety pack. Note Black and Blue work great, the other do not. very disappointed
Cheers 🙂
Thanks!
Hello Rocketbook Users,
I know Pilot has LX, but I'm looking for nice pens for meetings. Do you know any other Rocketbook compatible cartridge manufacturer which fits into regular, more elegant pens?
The Pilot pens with this nonfigurative drawing and the cheap design...
Why do they have erasers if you can't use them?
The pens were not designed for these notebooks - the notebooks simply take advantage of the pens, which were designed for normal paper.
What is the point of the eraser if it's damaging to use?
FriXion pens weren't made for Rocketbooks - they are a separate product made by Pilot and they can be used with regular paper as well.
@@JakeReevesVideo ohh ok I'm hoping to get one soon so does rocketbook have their own pens?
Nope, the only pens the company says you should use are the Pilot FriXion pens.
@@JakeReevesVideo interesting ok cool can't wait to see how it goes thanks
No problem 👍 Good luck ✌️
2:37 that's what she said
I prefer 0.5
Me too 👍
I use the .5 for black but I like the colors available in the .7. There are more available in .7 than .5. I would prefer .5 if I could get all the same colors
Makes sense 👍 Thanks for sharing ✌️
My art teacher told me to buy a 0.482828393 mm erasable pen
