    That's great! I agree that putting the panels on the front wouldn't look great, but have you thought about replacing your driveway with those drive-on solar panels? Lots of countries are experimenting with replacing roads or bike paths with solar panels. Very promising technology!

    I have 4 kW panels with Enphase microinverters on the front side of my house and 3kW panels with a Fronius string inverter on the rear of the house. Frankly, I don't think the panels detract from the appearance - but that is me, not Ms. EEVBLOG. I'm in Denver, so I don't have as good average insolation as Sydney, but I'm pleased with the results. (I'm now on my 3rd inverter for the string array, but I got 10 years each from the 1st two.)

    I have a heap of panels facing south east, I was not expecting much output having listening to all the UA-cam experts but it works a lot better than I expected. Winter does affect it a little but in summer the sun is nearly directly above my house in the day.

      Definitely agree about dirty panels, it’s not worth the risk of being on the roof

    I haven't cleaned my panels since installed in 2012 and I have recorded production every minute into a database, I can't see any degradation or loss of production. But they do get snow in the winter so IDK if that scrapes crud of them when it slides down. Also had 2 times where they were all yellow / white from a abnormal pollen situation and they worked great.

    I'm just a smidge south of you down near Liverpool, 40.9kWh production from 12.32kWp, what a beautiful winter's day. I had to switch to Origin recently for the 10c feed in, I hear Engie(Simply Energy) pays 12c but I can't seem to sign up for them lol. I'm counting down the days until the hot water system dies so I can get a heat pump one, we used 730kWh last quarter just for hot water.

      I got a similar amount from a 7,5kWp system yesterday.
      Mine are aimed at the south east, this might be a difference.

      13.2kWh for my 5.18kW Enphase scales to 31.4kWh for your size system. So I assume yours is way better angle optimised than mine with panels on both sides of the roof.

    My UK tariff (import/export pence per kWh):
    Normal: 24p/14p
    Cheap time: 15p/5p (2am to 5am)
    Peak time: 35p/25p (4pm to 7pm)
    Standing charge = 59p/day
    So, charge batteries at cheap time if no sun.
    Export surplus at peak time for a profit.
    But generally with a 10kWh battery never need to import anything in summer.

    You could get significantly more if you just had them setup on a simple tracking system; you could basically get your "peak" power all day long. They would be less sightly of course and standing up on the roof with some bracketry.. But you could put them all on the same system with a long driveshaft with worm gears on each pole where it can operate with one motor... but yet still be very strong if the wind tried to blow them around--- since worm gear setups only let you apply force in one direction. it would be a fun project to tackle.. especially if you had your own lathe and welder

    You get more output with some slight cloud cover as it helps reflect the sun and defuse it, clear sky isn’t quite as good.

      Straight out of Solar Roadways' book.

    • @TheHuesSciTech
      @TheHuesSciTech Місяць тому +2

      Citation very much needed. Dave has shown peaks higher than a perfectly clear day before, but that was the very particular case where there were clouds in the sky, but crucially *not* covering the sun from the panels' perspective. In that scenario, you are indeed stealing some power from the people currently under the shadow of the clouds. But wait 10 minutes, and it'll be your turn in the shadow; and you do end up getting less power overall. This is what makes sense to me from my armchair at least, any hard numbers or science would convince me otherwise.

    • @IanScottJohnston
      @IanScottJohnston Місяць тому +5

      Aka "cloud edge effect." When the sun is near the edge of a cloud, sunlight can be scattered and spread out, reaching the solar panels from multiple angles.
