Do I love this? No, but there's no arguing with the fact that it's an interesting look. And given how much time I put into it, it's a keeper.
Overall, not an expensive finish either - just three can of spray paint (includes the clear coat) and some sandpaper. And wrinkled fingers from all the wet sanding.

use angle grinder and wire cup to scraping the paint
That looks sick! Reminds me of raindrop Damascus
I loved it!
Love it. So you sort of invented Detroit Agate veneer!. I could see this being a very desirable effect on electric guitars
Well, it simply looks awesome. If I had a place to work I'll try yellow and marine blue.
Put me in the "love it" column
That turned out great. I like that you included the trial and error learning process.
More important than liking or disliking the final look is to appreciate the development of the technique. Very cool.
Well that's pretty darn cool! Great technique. Never seen that before.
I think it looks cool. The knife worked surprisingly well.
Good that the knife worked, or it would still be out in my shop half done :)
Need to try this again with different colours and pattern.
John Heisz - I Build It You’re definitely into something.
Never considered doing something like this on purpose. I only ever had this happen when I sandrd through a layer of plywood. Really creative and a cool looking result! 👍
Its a feature!
I remember the boats of the Belgian state-sponsored sports camps (BLOSO then, for the Flemish half). Yearly they'd be taken out and painted in whatever bulk paint available --- often discarded/refused for some factory defect, or out-of-date, rarely confiscated. These were all 20+ years old, 420s, 470s, Caravelles and the odd Cigogne... Whenever you crashed into something, you'd see 10+ layers of paint exposed, all different. And they weren't sanded (quite) smooth before repainting, so even a normal sanding job instead of a crash would reveal a weird pattern I guess.
Amazing that it gives that effect by simply sanding/scraping. Thanks John.
I love the result! And the techniques you devised to effectively achieve the look you were going for.
I think it looks stunning. Clever process too.
So creative! I will use this as an accent on a piece I'm working on.
It's a lot of sanding for patient people but the result is awsome. I love it, really beautiful.
I don't know yet if I love it or hate it but I love that you did this and shared it with us. Thanks.
That paint job is wild looking. Great job.
That turned out so much better than I expected when you first started talking about this. Really cool effect even if the color scheme doesn’t fit my house I would still keep this around as an awesome conversation piece.
Wild look. Don't love it. Don't hate it. Was glad I saw how you did it.
I like the result. And John's awesome because he suffered the experimentation process (all that ruined sandpaper) to figure out the best technique so that we don't have to. Excellent!
Looks SO good with the chipboard
Love it!
Going to try my hand at this, maybe on furniture, a drawer front or something.
Interesting outcome. I would not have guessed that look would come from doing this but then I didn't think about the varying hardness in the wood you used. I like it.
I've never seen that before. I love the process but I am taking a while to warm to the result. It's something I would honestly compliment in your home but wouldn't do in my own if you know what I mean.
Oh, definitely, I know what you mean :)
That was my thought. I appreciate the work John put into doing it but...not for me.
needs a more modern looking themed room maybe, cant see it in a classical place somehow !
Exactly, but I have 3 grown kids that would love that look! Especially my daughters.
This is fantastic! Where did you get the idea? It reminds me of some Japanese lacquer techniques. www.1stdibs.com/furniture/asian-art-furniture/lacquer/japanese-cased-lacquer-jubako-box-set-circa-1960/id-f_6118423/
Looks cool John! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
One word: Brilliant....
Nice job. Finish is excellent
looks like a damascus kind of finish, really dig it great work
Great project John. I can see that a lot of effort was put into this project. Nice job
Your creativity never ceases to amaze me. Good job and thanks for sharing!
Absolutely Awesome John! Love it!
Awesome! This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to run in my shop and try it out.
the curved effect around the speaker hole and lower port is really really cool!
Interesting and creative idea. Quite like the end result. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting effect that involves everyones favourite past time....sanding!...lol.
i love the idea John , tnx 4 sharing :)
Don't ever stop to try new stuff !
Looks Great. Nice work John....
back to the future john very nice effect.
Looks amazing John .. keep the great vids coming we appreciate you
I love that technique and color. Pretty cool.
I'd have a hard time resisting the belt sander on this one! Looks excellent :)
I used a similar technique on a furniture project (end tables with alternating Gray & White paint on plywood). I like to put a clear coat in between each layer and then wax at the end (automotive Turtle Wax has a nice effect). Different woods will have a different look - difference in grain & texture. If you mask a stripe pattern in addition to the alternating colors and then ask a pal to take a look, you can instantly intoxicate your pal with no liquor or chemicals required! 😎👍
3:14 "...this is the one I made from a broken shovel and a piece of concrete..." THIS is why we keep coming back!
John, that is sick, awesome work!
that looks awesome
really nice experiment with a great result
I think that is pretty cool. Nicely done.
THAT'S FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO JOHN GO!!!!!!!!!!!!
That turned out great. Totally dig it
I think it turned out very nice John! Thank you for sharing the video with us.👍👌😎JP
I love it John, it's really wild, I wish I had your patience and skill to do projects like that.
Black with a dark gray would look good. For me, just less contrast would be an improvement. The technique is the thing here. Good stuff John.
Awesome idea john. This is why I still follow your work. Love out of the “box” thinking.
It is unique, what is neat is possible color choices to fit a style or decor.
I love it John!
I think this is a pretty sweet look, and a really interesting concept. A paint job like that on a guitar with several colors could be really awesome! My gears are spinning now....
That looks sick! Love it column.
Totally original. Love it. I want to do it in black & green on something. Imagine controlling it to make a pattern, like sin waves.
I love it John. Very nice professional job as always!
Love it! Definitely going to give this a try. Thank you for taking risks that produce such amazing rewards.
That looks F**KING AMAZING. I have to try that out.
Really smart. I have picked out 3 colours to try out on to see if it would suit funky drawer front's. Thank you.
Wow mind blowing!! Great job!!
It would look outrageously good with red, white, and blue
That looks awesome! Great job John!
Awesome John. Love it.
Looks amazing. Seems as if you can be careless while doing it - something I'm very skilled at. Love it.
I like this finish. Very cool.
I think it looks Great !! I would definitely use this method. Nice Job.
Wow John, your rockin that 60s mod look. Definitely thumbs up.
great job John
Ditto on the "Love it", the effort seemed worth the result, cool ...
Great work John. I think it looks great and would love something different like that in my house.
Nice build,great looking effect
I really like it, it is not the kind of thing I would keep it on the middle of my living room but I like how interesting and eye catching it is. Great job John!!
What a great idea, John! I can imagine quite some projects where this technique will come in handy. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Love it. That came out great.
Clever technique, thanks for sharing!
wow, that looks really cool!
You should definetly do more of this and with different colors, very cool idea!
Hi John, I am in the love it camp. A very interesting (at least to me) way of making a good looking finish.
What an excellent idea !
I quite like the resulting effect, thank you.
I think this is brilliant looking, not normally my type of thing, but if turned out fantastic
Really interesting result. I think if I were to do this I would pick colors with less contrast between them, making the effect more subtle
Awesome pattern!
It is definitely unique and a conversation piece. I like it.
Love it. Perfect for some Floyd!
Great idea John, that looks fantastic.
Really a cool look!
I think it looks pretty cool.
It's actually a pretty cool look. Neat idea.
A lot of work John and it looks Great. Yes Keep it :)
Very interesting, the random effect of the scrapping yields a pattern that can give you thoughts of things you have seen years ago.
It's got a psychedelic feel to it - I like it.
I had a 60's flash back.
really cool result.
I think it's a cool effect and an interesting technique. Well done.
NICE John. Like it!!!!!
That’s really nice John - lots of effort was well rewarded.
I love your channel and hope that you keep up the great work.
Brilliant! As always.
Really cool!! Never seen that before!
Really nice effect.
