    Summer, these are actually high light plants indoors in North America. Your super long stems are etiolation from far too low light. That one should be much shorter and bushier. You can see examples here in the comments below of others who grow these right in a south window.

      Was thinking the exact same thing. Mine lives in a SW-facing window, is shooting out new leaves every week, and is completely compact. This is unnecessary etiolation.

      So true!! This was actually my mom's first ever, LIVE, house plant(11 yes ago) & the first plant I ever cared for & it would never grow more than 5 leaves for a good 4 years until I started caring for it. I first moved it to the biggest, brightest window in the house & it started overtaking the entire kitchen!!😭 I have it outside, almost full sun, now & its become a literal bush lol. It dies out every winter then comes right back. (Edit: Since there's so much of it, I'm finally learning to & gonna start propagating it to bring back into the house. This plant has turned me into a monster & I can't stop taking in more plants, I fear😂)

    Oooh! This is a very special plant to me. I worked SO hard to save the one I have! Picked it up from the Lowe's sale rack when I was still pretty new with houseplants. It was nice and full, but maybe had root rot. For a while, I was losing the fight! Every week or so a stem would die. :( BUT one last stem survived and has sense grown more stems. :) I felt so much joy every day when I checked on that last stem and saw that it was still hanging on and especially when it started putting out new growth.

    You touched on a commonly overlooked cultural necessity for potted plants; leaching the soil. Once or twice a year most potted plants that are planted in soil should be leached. That means taking them to a sink, shower, tub or outside and running water through the soil. Apply at least five or more times the quantity of water that one would give the plant during a normal thorough irrigation. This helps to flush out ,or at least dilute, the concentrations of salts, etc., that build up over time from the water impurities and fertilizer that have been added to soil that is confined to a pot. Leaching is especially beneficial to plants that are sensitive to ‘sour’ media. It also helps keep plants ,that for whatever reason cannot be repotted in a timely manner healthier, by somewhat refreshing their soil. It is best to leach when a plant is actively growing under decent conditions. Do not leach a sick plant or one that is being grown under poor conditions like very low light as the resulting saturated soil may rot the roots of a plant that isn’t transpiring properly.

      Interesting! Should I do this with cacti and succulents as well?

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47
      @Nhoj31neirbo47 4 роки тому +2

      Szatmari Andrea - I have to say do not leach cactus and succulents, even though many will respond well . Some cactus and succulents are very prone to root rot caused by overly wet soil, so leaching would have to be done with extreme care. Proper succulent soil drains well and thus accumulates less salts, etc., than regular , denser potting soil. Also succulents are fertilized less than most other potted plants and therefore their soil stays fresh longer. To refresh their soil one should repot them , removing 1/3 or more of the old medium and keeping the plant in the same size pot , unless it has outgrown it. I hope this helps.

    I saw 10” pots of these at Lowes for $16 the most beautiful plant I had ever seen but was labeled a “peacock” I didn’t get them but later went back and they were gone! I have not been able to find proper name until now. Thank you.

    I love this plant and picked it up at the grocery store I work at, not really knowing what it was, I had a feeling that it was in the Calathea family but did some research and figured out it is a Ctenenthe Mosaic and in the Maranta family. It is so healthy and full and I have it back away from a East facing window and it gets nice light but not too bright and it seems very happy where it is. Thanks Summer see you soon, bye for now.

    I had to throw mine out last month because of a scale infection that I couldn’t get under control no matter what I did. It got huge since last March sitting in indirect light by a large south facing window. I took segments from the top and propagated them in water so I could start the plant over. It’s a really underrated plant and I was sad to have to have thrown it out. Was the first plant I got when I moved into my apartment

    I definitely recommend keeping the nitrogen low on this one with a balanced organic fertilizer. It will get nitrogen burn! 4-4-4 cut in half works for me in my particular culture.

    “Easiest to take care of” yet my leaves won’t stop browning 😂. I gave mine too much light and his leaves curled, so I moved him to a darker room and now they’re brown.

    • @1faithchick7
      @1faithchick7 4 місяці тому

      Browing leaves is usually a water salt/cloriene issue for plants like this. I would buy cheap fish tank water conditioner to declorinate the water before watering the plant. I would also check for thrips. That was my issue. I couldn't see any one that plant, but my other plant had visable thrips. Once both plants were treated the plant stopped browning.
