  • Mar Meelis allegedly controlled the Church Committee, taking possession of its assets, thereby splitting the Sydney Church of the East community into old and new calendar groups. He took the Old Calendar faction to court to take full control of St. Mary’s church in 1988-9. After the Supreme Court of New South Wales ruled in favour of bishop Mar Meelis Zaia, Assyrians protested and several of them got involved in a brawl outside the courthouse. The event resulted in legal proceedings over property rights.

Crazy how the media has changed so much. It is very clear the interviewer has negative feelings about Assyrians.

We've come a long way. Back then, mainstream western media was eurocentrist and a sense of white nationalism (us first, then you guys). Right now, it's the other way round. Someone like Carleton would've been fired if he acted like this today towards a minority group. Now, we're way too placative and appeasing towards minorities. Funny how it all changed.

Back in the 1980s, it was okay for mainstream media to reprimand non-Anglo Australian ethnicities. Nowadays, the world will shake if Richard acted the way he did.

For those wondering what this fight is over in the first place:
In the 1960s the Assyrian Church of the East adopted the Gregorian calendar (meaning that the feasts and commemorations are shifted over by a bit) from the original Julian calendar. This caused a split within the Assyrian Church of the East, because some of them thought this (and other practices) of the mainstream Assyrian church were heretical/problematic, so they elected their own patriarch. This splinter church is called the Ancient Church of the East. The fighting going on regards the Assyrians who are part of the Ancient Church of the East wanting this property or whatever for their church, instead of it being part of the mainstream Assyrian Church. The Assyrian Church of the East is new-calendarist, the Ancient Church of the East is old-calendarist.

Yes, my church uses the Ancient Assyrian calendar. Its sad, Assyrians have always been the most persecuted Christians in the Middle East, we can’t let the devil destroy us and win in a different land. I truly hope we unite once again. I also noticed that women no not wear hear scarf, all wear in ours.

Apparently, bishop Mar Meelis (who is New Calendarist) took rights and ownership of St Mary's Church in Smithfield - It was originally the Old Calendarist church of the Ancient Church of the East, or their church (the people in the video who are complaining). They did not want him owning the church and so they fought against it. In a way, I don't blame them.

I'm Assyrian and I lived through this. I was born in Fairfield in the late 70's and remember the whole thing. Although I was only a kid, I felt this intense euphoria in being united with my culture; even though I have never been overtly religious, or overtly Assyrian. It just goes to show what comradery can do to one's own view of the world. By the way, I was on the "primitive" side of things.

@@cscs9192 The Bishop got everything after failed negotiations once the court case was complete. Apparently, he offered more than what they initially wanted but it was rejected for some reason. Probably something to do with 'principals'. The 'losing' side eventually built a new church out near Austral somewhere about 20 years later. And yes, the division between the two groups still exists to this day.

@@0000sarge Also noteworthy that many of those who opposed the bishop that day have come back to support him. He has built additional churches, primary school, high school and nursing homes. I doubt that those who opposed him that day would have achieved such a thing cause human nature is built on greed and everyone would have taken everything for themselves. We are grateful for him and what he has done.

@@AssyrianDynamo Yeah true. The man at 3:20 sat right next to the Bishop at the 2004 Assyrian New Year, and clapped for him. Furthermore, the lady at 1:56 is the late Marian Khamis, an Assyrian radio presenter. She also supported the bishop later on. Rather tragically, she was diagnosed with kidney disease a few years ago and Mar Meelis aided her through her sickness. She recovered, but relapsed, where she sadly passed away a few months ago. There's a pretty touching video of her on UA-cam praising him and thanking him for the help. You can look for it if you write her name up.

Exactly. The Assyrian didn't apply God's word to himself and justified his hatred because he doesn't consider the bishop a man of God. So what? Rebuke him. Prove him wrong. Warn against him. Pray for his forgiveness. But don't kill him or side with those who threaten to.

Assyrian from Iraq, now American. Yes in Iraq there were always hardship between Shia and Muslim, or Shia progressive and Shia conservatives and so on. In our church, the Devil will always try to divide us, its his main goal, divide, heresy and so forth. We must stick true to the Bible no matter and be experts on the words of God, and no matter what, forgive those that know not what they do, pray and fast for them that they may see the light and be saved by Yeshua the Christo of Nazareth our Lord and Savior.
