the captain was a true American artist, and everything he did ,music and painting, was ahead of its time, interesting ,and heartfelt.his work will live on forever.
Well, 70+ now :-) and I had Clearspot in 1972, the Ted Templeman produced album. I was living with a (slightly) older woman who was one of my lecturers at college and we had a flat on he 13th floor: great sunrises. Anyway I remember this house guest listening to "Big Eyed beans from Venus" and freaking out - in a good way. Quite ironic that nearly 50 years later this music is now being rediscovered by new generations and appreciated for the great artistic endeavour it is.
First time i heard the captains big eyed beens was round 2000. i went like: this is one of the best tracks i ve ever heard! All thanks to a headline set on a friday evening by spacemens 3 jason pierce. Still got that set recorded on cd..great tracklist
Love Beefheart! After seeing this sesión on the Whistle Test I went hunting in the Second Hand Récord stores in Dublin and bought whatever Albums they had of Captain Beefheart. Many moons ago now when I was a young dreamer.💚
I love how this ends. I am a big fan of this guy. Mostly the old stuff but this was fantastic. At the end when he blows into the harp and its upside down lol so he turns it around blows in it and nothing comes out lol . Love that little smirk he makes after. Love the Beefer lol. Miss ya.
What a sublime piece of guitar playing by Dean Smith. Wonderful tone. Anybody know what pickups he has in that beautiful Gibson? They don’t look like humbuckers and I wondered if they were P90s or similar.
I only have his first album Safe As Milk, which is really good. He's always fascinated me. I've heard Trout Mask Replica, pretty hard going ha. Produced by his then partner in crime Frank Zappa. I really like this track.
Dean Smith. Equally good version on Live in London 1974 where Don actually gives him credit. Fine work on Bluejeans and Moonbeams too, denigrated by Magic Band blowhards but a great album nonetheless. Check out Petals in the Wind on Red Gravel Road, recent meditative stuff.
I always remember Captain Beefheart's music as being chaotic, discordant and difficult to listen to but this performance is great and very melodic too.
I got trout mask replica when it came out in the UK every one of my friends couldn’t even bear to hear it , I loved , but in my mind I thought these guys are just fucked up on acid and just playing what comes into their minds ,,Then beefheart came to London and played the rainbow ,,they played the bulk of trout mask replica note for note , I took a girl with me I never saw her again ,,haha ha
It is hard to put your finger on the genius of Capt. Beefheart ....but I am certain we will never see his like again. The album that this track came from (Unconditionally Gauranteed) was pretty much dismissed at the time but I found it a thing of beauty and still play it to this day.
This is just kinda like 70s soft rock, so if anything it would be "planting the seeds" for that. Aaron Freeman said on the WTF Podcast that he loved soft rock, so that might be why Ween sounds like that sometimes
Yeah, not the "regular" stuff from the good Captain, but pretty decent really. Proves he was also a "song writer" and not just a crazed screaming alt-blues-beat-poetry dude. I especially love his tasteful harmonica at the end. Didn't see that coming!
What a beautiful song -- but still with just enough of that DVV weirdness that lets you know that you're listening to the one and only Capt. Beefheart and no one else!!
This must have been 1974. This song is from 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' which was followed quickly after by 'Bluejeans and Moonbeams'. Both albums are very different from his other output, but they are still great.
I started with Doc at the Radar Station after he appeared on SNL in early 80’s then backtracked to Safe as Milk & the rest including this. He was doing pop on this song perhaps under pressure & while maintaining a Beefheart approach to it. Love most all of his (music?)(poetry?) whatever it is.
I once read a really terrible crime novel where the "hero" plays Capt BH while seducing a teenage runaway. Until I heard this, that made absolutely no sense.
According to Wikipedia, this song is a track on “Unconditionally Guaranteed”. Also according to Wikipedia, “immediately after” recording that record the entire Magic Band quit. They were, reportedly, “horrified” when they listened to it. That makes me wonder if the musicians here are the Magic Band as it was then constituted or substitutes. The flutist credited on the album is listed under “additional personnel”.
The flute player is actually Auggie Di Martino. One half of CBH's management and agents, the Di Martino Bros. I don't know where you read your information, but the "Tragic Band" members did not quit because they were "horrified" over the album. And yes, these are the original "Tragic Band" members. And they were excellent musicians.
This song is still waiting for that ultimate cover from a band that already shared this vibe though this is remarkable considering it is so far removed from their typical stuff
Wow! that was sweet. Ive never heard the good Captain do anything like that before? Very nice. I generally have not had a good idea of what he can do.? ...I dig some of his funky blues but Trout Mask is unlistenable to my ear, though fun to discuss with other musicians......for me, its too much work to listen to some of his stuff...and unfortunately, much of his best material was poorly recorded. I put him in the category with Wagner ....my music theory teacher said about Wagner " his music is better than it sounds!"......which is hysterical..bwahahah!!
Neither had I, but Safe as Milk kinda gives a wee bit of an idea of what could be coming. TMR is not an easy " listen " but it is worth the effort IMHO.
My music theory teacher, when we were analyzing Wagner, .."Wagner's music is better than it sounds."....which is hysterical. Trout Mask is, arguably, in that category.
Nice to see a thawing towards the 'Tragic Band' in the comments here. People in the UK especially only loved Beefheart when he was belligerently weird.
Nothing can top the madness of Trout Mask Replica. The only music I’ve ever listened to and physically felt uncomfortable (like having restless leg syndrome)
1976 was the year I fell in love with Cynthia. She was my whole world until the Shiny Beast popped up. Then she turned out to be to square for my mirrror.
Pretty mellow and commercial for the Captain. I guess the record company was trying to get him to reach a wider market. The "out" harmonica playing at the end reveals the other side of the Mr. Van Vliet.
nah, the captain wanted to become more commercial so he could make more money. The Trout Mask band meanwhile continued not making money, and since they weren't making music they liked anymore, a lot of them quit. It didn't help that Beefheart was giving his new members solos, while the old band never had any in all their years of playing, etc.
@@Marsellus82 No. Being told to tone down what you really feel like doing does not sit well with me. But if you think there is a benefit to being commercial "making more money" and reaching a larger audience then by all means do it. If you start sounding like everybody else (a bean counter's taste perhaps) you will probably lose me as a listener. And frankly who cares if I listen anyway?
the real talent here consists in The Beef Master's ability to keep a straight face while he hits each trope and cliche seamlessly and, i suspect, improv'd in the moment. lyrically, i wonder if he even had this one mapped out beyond a basic concept before hitting the stage! musically, there's no trace of ineptitude or even mediocrity as the esoterically indoctrinated will attest. the mere ability to use pantomime and satire from within a musical context is proof in and of itself. he even nailed the hair-do and sensitive shirt selection!
the captain was a true American artist, and everything he did ,music and painting, was ahead of its time, interesting ,and heartfelt.his work will live on forever.
Beautiful guitar playing,a great performance by every band member.

Big Eyed Beans From Venus is a mind-blowing classic!
This song breaks me in 10000 pieces. Amazing 🔥

Me and you. I was into him in about 87 or 88
The calmest and nicest CBH I've ever heard.
I never knew he had it in him! 🤔
Try Observatory Crest
My older brother introduced me to captain beef heart .sadly all gone now Holsey67 🇬🇧

I myself refer to him as "The Beefy One."
Fantastic song, what a guy
I just don't see how the world isn't obsessed with this.
But I know better.
Different level, superb.
Beefheart on Bongo Furry with Zappa is awesome. Debra kadabra. He was also a painter. A true avant garde artist.
Crazy good musicianship!
Their sense of dynamics is top notch professionalism.
Don Van Vliet takes time out to play something easy for us mortals. This song was regarded as a gateway drug into the harder stuff.
Beautiful. What a change from upon the my oh my(which I love!)Great musicians and of course the captains voice!
What a sublime piece of guitar playing by Dean Smith. Wonderful tone.
Anybody know what pickups he has in that beautiful Gibson? They don’t look like humbuckers and I wondered if they were P90s or similar.
Mini-humbuckers
I only have his first album Safe As Milk, which is really good. He's always fascinated me. I've heard Trout Mask Replica, pretty hard going ha. Produced by his then partner in crime Frank Zappa.
I really like this track.
The guitar is sublime

the music still sounds great but his lyrics and vocals comparatively SUCK.

Unconditionally Guaranteed preceded Bluejeans and Moonbeams.

En el programa de Capusotto lo pasaban siempre. Temazo
Sheer bliss. If only...
Pretty damn good.
This sounds like the sentiments being expressed in 1967, I've never heard it before, I wonder who captured Captain Beefheart's heart?
I still love the first album Safe As Milk
Lovely Guitar solo. One of the advantages of being old is that I no longer have to pretend that "Trout Mask Replica" is a masterpiece!
Captain Beefheart became more mainstream with these tunes.Still great tunes.
Further than We've Gone is so beautifully melancholy
My brother sums up The Captains career up best. The first half was this avade garde music. The second more traditional. Both are amazing.
Ice cream for crow is pretty wacky though, right?
this is the day I wish this shit would go away
Fabulous and unusual for the captain. Rog. Pacific sunset records.

Hey Bob. The middle earth gig was 1968.
Absolutely right, because the lead guitar players guitar is at least a 68 because of the small Humbucker pickups and the darkness of the burst.
