Hi. I live here in "Yuri". The water right around the town is disgusting, thanks to the lack of a proper waste removal system, and the daily influx of barges with goods, people, and animals. I would NOT swim in the Ria Huallaga, the river that flows past Yuri, even if you paid me. The people who work the river, on the whole, are very uneducated and don't give much thought to tossing their trash directly in the river, let alone something as complex as conservation. That said, a few kilometers away, upstream from the city, the water is good. It's brown due to silt and mud, but when it settles its crystal clear. The hotel these people are staying in, The Rio Huallaga, is the only truly gorgeous hotel in town. (The manager, Marco, is a friend of mine.) Even still, the view is... meh. What's really interesting is that, unlike most waterfront property around the world, the very poorest of the poor live on the Rio Huallaga. It's the "slum" of Yuri, which I find fascinating and ridiculous. Anywhere else, and you'd find mansions, docks, a marina, boats, etc. Not here. Here you have toilets emptying directly into the river, which is shocking for visitors to see. One last note you might find amusing; the Peruvian Corp of Engineers put in a multi-million dollar port on the northern end of the city. It was supposed to clear out the congestion and make the place quieter and cleaner. When it was done... it was discovered that the engineers had made a BIG mistake and the port was too low to handle most of the barges arriving there. Welcome to Peru!
I would instead go to Tarapoto! Much nicer, cleaner, more things to do and see, better restaurants, and the river is nicer. Yurimaguas is... not great. Ciao
