Evangelion is a masterpiece! Disturbingly amazing! And a lot of its symbolism is about depression, so it takes a thorough understanding of the scenes through a more metaphorical perspective.
God, Evangelion takes me back to my fledgling anime fan days at university... Waiting weeks for the next DVD volume to arrive in HMV so that I could drop £20 for a disc with 3 whole episodes. 😅 This show... Watching it as a clearly-depressed 18 year old was a) kind of perfect and b) probably a very bad idea. It's been years since I watched it, but I feel like it still haunts my life in a way.
I can't hear the opening part to this song without getting chills and being brought back to my best friends basement when I was 14 literally spending the entire night not sleeping and binging this show.
On the surface EVA is a show about giant robots fighting monsters. But in actuality, it's a deconstruction of depression, existentialism, and the ego. All framed within the trauma of throwing a teenage boy in a robot and making him kill just to feel like he's worth something.
Hideki Anno wrothe this story as a means of working through his depression and its responsible for the meme "Get in the robot shinji!" Intense is the word for it but if you considered doing reaction vids you'd be good up to episode 20 which is when the twists in the story lead to enough confusion that two "ending" films were made followed by a total reboot/retelling that is wrapping up with the third of three reboot films just released but this is all in all onme of the greatest series ever done
Evangelion literally REDEFINED what anime meant back in the 90s, and we can see its influence still to this day, if it wasn't for it, we could never know what the industry could've turned into.
The first anime I saw (I remember I was 10 or 11 and being able to watch it weekly on the TV), still one of my favorite, I rewatch it every year or so…. I definitely missed a lot of the most philosophical subjects when I was a kid XD
Original first anime series of Evangelion came out in 1995 they then did a remake movie of it in mid 2000s then in Late 2009s-2022, a trilogy of remake movies (4 Movies that spans over more than a decade to remake it even more with modern animation) Apparently, this anime is the most revolutionary and inspiring anime of its time. IN FACT, alot of modern anime are lowkey inspired by it including Chainsawman. If you know the details, then you can tell that Chainsawman Opening and the anime took ideas and visuals from Evangelion to make. (One of the scene in the opening of chainsawman is actually a scene from the remake movie of evangelion. Chainsawman design as a character is actually based on a mecha from Evangelion. Chainsawman cast are roughly inspired by Evangelion cast (with tweaks to make it different.) Evangelion is the first major anime to give birth and popularize the concept of TSUNDERE and DANDERE (google what these are.)
There _is_ action in Eva, but it's actually a psychological anime. You only know as much of the actual lore about what is happening onscreen as Shinji does (which isn't a complete picture), and instead the focus of the show is on the cast's mental health.
the first time i watched this anime was in like 2008, i was in middle school. it is no exaggeration to say that this anime reshaped my understanding of what anime is capable of as a medium. before that anime was just fun animation to me. it was the first time i was genuinely mystified by a show, horrified and enlightened, to the point of being engrossed in theories, interpretations, and the religious, psychological contexts it inspired. it is honestly so goddamn GOOD
I hope you can also react to Evangelion movie theme song. They are also top tier song. My favourite is Sakura nagashi. If you never heard Utada Hikaru, than Evangelion is where you want to start.
This is the only anime besides Steins Gate that I am too scared to finish. Not like 'ah the horror is too much' or 'I want to know there are episodes to come back to' but just flat out the story is so intense that I couldn't handle it and have since never worked up the courage to go back because I think it will just be even more traumatising. Yet it has to be said that it is arguably the most influential anime of all time. You can see it's DNA baked in to at least 75% of anime made since it came out, right up until today.
If you ever manage, please try. You're right -- it gets very, very dire. But there is a silver lining in there. End of Evangelion is an absolutely incredible film.
Man you just named my top 2 anime series hahahah the only two I always carry with me "just in case I need a quick rewatch if internet is not available" (I have all episodes of both series on my phone) They both (especially Evangelion) carry an ending such full of hope that really makes my day every time I finish it. At least that's what I personally get from those series. Hope and possibility, both to understand one another and to achieve a better future for ourselves.

It's about giant robot fighting giant monsters, that is what it could be seen as and still be right about it, dig deeper it's about people's way in dealing with their own life, dig deeper down, it's about humanity and their psychology, again; dig a bit more deeper, it's about how people can be overthinking about what the anime is all about and make their own interpretation based on how it relate to them and different people came out with different meanings, it's like reading the bible, you can take it at face value or dig in more to find your own understanding and make peace with what ever you find at the end of it,
Ah! Now you're wading into the DEEP waters of anime! "Neon Genesis Evangelion" ran so that "Attack on Titan" and similar apocalyptic anime stories could fly. This is one of those foundational shows in Japanese animation. Right up there with the movie "Akira." Hideaki Ano and Studio Gainax released this fantastic/horrific/mind-breaking anime between 1995-1996, so you're not wrong in thinking that the opening song has a retro feel to it. It was meant to. "Cruel Angel's Thesis" is one of those songs that's so famous, it's almost guaranteed to be a Karaoke staple available to sing, and almost guaranteed to be the ONLY song an (older) anime fan can belt out by heart. (At least, the first half of the song - not so much the rest of the song. 😅) Evangelion is a simple coming-of-age story about a boy, his absentee father, two girls, a robot, and preventing the (second) end of the world via "Angels." And psychological trauma. Lots of it. You've gotten through Attack On Titan, so I think (???) you might be able to handle this one. But as a veteran "Anime Otaku," even Evangelion is a LOT to take in. And the music video only conveys a fraction of the madness and brilliance of this saga.
It's not as dark as some ppl are making it seem. It deals with more mature and thoughtful themes but it isn't a depressing slog. I can rewatch it easily. There is plently of movies or shows I would never rewatch because they are miserable, regardless of how good they might be.
@@InfluxLight I agree that are darker parts to it, but some comments are acting like its hard to get through because of how depressing it is. Which is not true at all.

Its extremely metaphorical and psychological. The base plot is basically a story of a kid thrust into piloting a giant robot to save the world you know the cliche of all mech anime plot lines but it deals a lot but it has depth and meaning behind symbolism about human condition depression trauma sex ect. And like a lot of the great anime’s from the early 90 its doesn’t shy away for censors.
Religion meets sci-fi and everything goes crazy. It's a mech anime with additional supernatural elements. You follow the story of how their new world affects teens.
This anime is a historic masterpiece that has influenced countless future anime works and creators, as well as a controversial work that has sparked various debates and social phenomena. Many people have been inspired by the deep philosophical messages they've interpreted from the work. The first series was created in 1995, which was, well, a very dark and chaotic tumultuous time for Japan. On the other hand, this song has long been the number one most frequently sung song in Japanese karaoke and is also one of the most famous anime songs in the world. Although it has some sonic similarities to the 1980s, it lacks the brilliance, nostalgia, and strong individuality of the 80s city pop, and instead has a refreshing, popular musical appeal. Furthermore, this song is an example of the sloppy tie-ins that were common in the 90s, as the lyricist was reportedly unfamiliar with most of the content, having only seen the anime's proposal document and a few storyboards.
You know the saying "back in my day" Well this Anime is that, they just did things differently with this show, it's old but still one of the best anime released to date. It's almost 30 years old at this point, released back in 1995 and people still put this in their top 10 lists and the opening song is often in the top 5 of anime openings. Goes to show how good this is.
Please react to more 90s anime songs. Get Along by Megumi Hayashibara and Masami Okui, Rinbu Revolution by Masami Okui, Yakusoku wa Iranai by Maaya Sakamoto, Hinageshi by Michiyo Nakajima, Just Communication by Two Mix, Mask by Masami Okui, Aoi Kaze no Hope by Kageyama Hironobu for example.
We can say that is the most cult anime ever... This is one "it isn't for anyone" anime. Judging by your Attack on Titan react I think you could like Evangelion, most than I liked I guess.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a show made in 1996 that was made as almost a way of letting it's author vent about his severe anxiety and depression. It has great fights and cool robots, but that's almost a cover up for the themes it brings up. It's inspiration is deeply rooted in philosophy and religion. There is a lot of Christian symbolism, and many episodes are named after and written to convey different philosophical concepts. The cast even personifies different kinds of mental health issues and character tropes. Like the author, Shinji (the main character) struggles with the dilemma of human connection. He is lonely and therefore searches for it, and yet he also fears the inevitable pain that comes with getting close to other people. It's really a story about understanding one's self, and others. All in all, it's an amazing show, steeped in action, self discovery, psychology, and even comedy. The original series spans 26 episodes and 1 movie called "The End of Evangelion". It was also brought back for a set of 4 "rebuild" movies that provide an alternate ending. Definitely recommend if this kind of things interests you!
Man if you liked the intro I heavily suggest you to watch it, it's just amazingly directed and one of the deepest series I ever watched. All the particoulars often pass unnoticed but they are all well tought and placed there ad hoc by the author. Strongly recommended
Ah yes. I forgot how good this anime was. The robot battles, and the human conflicts. Drenched in religious lore and symbolism. There was some really good animation that seems better than some of what we get theses days. I didn't like some of the dialog sequences and the whiny characters (though I suppose they all served some purpose). The plot and resolution was quite thought provoking and haunting. You have to watch the series multiple times to grasp and semblance of truth about each character and event. I haven't event see all of the alternative story and game lore that came afterward.
Great song this is... Neon Genesis Evangelion is actually quite complex plot wise and is still ranked among one of the best character depictions amongst old school anime. Also this was the anime that popularised waifu culture.
The series is about humans defending themselves against aliens called angels. Teenagers are selected to be pilots. The series is full of drama and they explore the nature of humanity
evangelion helped me go out of my depression, but damned it's hard to watch, inflict lot of psychological damage x) one of the best i saw but idk if you could enjoy it because it's a very unusual anime
most anime i jump to recommend ppl watch but evangelion I have to choose very carefully who I recommend it not bc its bad but bc I think its an anime you either love or hate there's no grey area
For any one in the comments who gets confused about the plot/story of evangelion, you can understand it realy simply as an anime-fied retelling of the Kabbalah
i feel traumatized from having to rewatch those scenes from end of Eva. i mean the first time i saw it was bad enough but seeing all that mind f-ry on scene just gives me flashbacks of all that . personally i think the show is freaking amazing and one of the best of all time ... as long as you stop watching 2 episodes before the end.
The Anime starts of looking like a normal mech anime, but its totally different the further it goes. Personally its not my favorite (if one wants to watch it the end should be switched up with the movies they made for it instead of the episodes), but i can see why many many like it, especially with the characters
When I watched this a long time ago I had no idea what is happening aside from mech fighting monsters. And the last episode confused the fuck outta me.
Evangelion holds up well on its own, even if it's art is starting to show it's age. Its even better in context: Up until this show, Super Robot anime was mostly about heroic heroes and quirky villians in black and white conflicts settled with mechanical titans. Evangelion took all those story cliches and asks "No, really, what kind of man sends his kid to fight his battles for him?" And it all sort of spirals from there. A great, iconic anime and probably the last truly influencial mecha anime... the genre burned out at the turn of the century and has never quite created such an iconic show since... with due respect to Code Geass and Gurren Lagann for being damn popular just not as transformative.
Not the best, but no one disagree that the song is iconic, not gonna lie, the anime looks old but it still hold even with today's standard, but only half of it tho, half of it looks like they didn't care to animate anything, the good thing was, while the other half looks bad, they manage to use it as their way of telling it's depressing stories, the sound makes up for it, and that was the best part of it, when shit goes down, they really sounds like it's gonna go wild,
This started out like a normal mecha anime. Later on it completely changes tone and you get into more mental gymnastics that confused the complete heck out of me. If you get into this anime there are several movies that show different endings and one afterwards. It stills does confuse me greatly.
Un resumen sin spoilers del anime. es una historia basada en la lucha de la humanidad contra los angeles q desean destruirla. pero todos desean detener a los angeles?

This op is part of culture in Japan afaik
We can say that is the most cult anime ever... This is one "it isn't for anyone" anime. Judging by your Attack on Titan react I think you could like Evangelion, most than I liked I guess.
映画版の主題歌も好きだから、リアクション動画してくれたら嬉しいな。
魂のルフラン、心よ原始に戻れ、beautiful world とか
Ahh brother. You're finally done with children anime... You finally reached Evangelion
Man if you liked the intro I heavily suggest you to watch it, it's just amazingly directed and one of the deepest series I ever watched.
All the particoulars often pass unnoticed but they are all well tought and placed there ad hoc by the author. Strongly recommended
エヴァンゲリオンは実際に視聴していた日本人のファンでも???な展開が多い。それを事前情報無しにあのMVを見せられれば、混乱もしようというもの。
If Pokemon OP is the most famous English anime opening, The cruel angel's thesis is easily the most famous Japanese anime opening.
*clap clap clap clap clap*
Most depressing and heartbreaking anime
An amazing anime and amazing music. similar to AoT, well kinda haha
The series is full of drama and they explore the nature of humanity
evangelion helped me go out of my depression, but damned it's hard to watch, inflict lot of psychological damage x) one of the best i saw but idk if you could enjoy it because it's a very unusual anime
most anime i jump to recommend ppl watch but evangelion I have to choose very carefully who I recommend it not bc its bad but bc I think its an anime you either love or hate there's no grey area
this anime is a masterpiece!
For any one in the comments who gets confused about the plot/story of evangelion, you can understand it realy simply as an anime-fied retelling of the Kabbalah
This series put me off the mecha genre for over a decade. lol
i feel traumatized from having to rewatch those scenes from end of Eva. i mean the first time i saw it was bad enough but seeing all that mind f-ry on scene just gives me flashbacks of all that . personally i think the show is freaking amazing and one of the best of all time ... as long as you stop watching 2 episodes before the end.
Peak
Evangelion holds up well on its own, even if it's art is starting to show it's age. Its even better in context:
Up until this show, Super Robot anime was mostly about heroic heroes and quirky villians in black and white conflicts settled with mechanical titans.
Not the best, but no one disagree that the song is iconic, not gonna lie, the anime looks old but it still hold even with today's standard, but only half of it tho, half of it looks like they didn't care to animate anything, the good thing was, while the other half looks bad, they manage to use it as their way of telling it's depressing stories, the sound makes up for it, and that was the best part of it, when shit goes down, they really sounds like it's gonna go wild,
it came out in 1995
What you see was not the opening is all the song with a vid of someone with scenes of the anime.
Try the Digimon opening "Butterfly"
Shinji and Asuka have issues with their parents.
Literally EVERYONE in this anime has issues with his parents
Next reaction please: The Vision of Escaflowne opening and ending
React to the Evangelion Anthem 😉
This started out like a normal mecha anime. Later on it completely changes tone and you get into more mental gymnastics that confused the complete heck out of me. If you get into this anime there are several movies that show different endings and one afterwards. It stills does confuse me greatly.
the anime that started the waifu war
It released in 1995
Watch the original to get depression and then watch the remakes to cure that depression
Hay otra versión donde los tambores se cambian por guitarra electrica
Giant Robot? You can say that but… spoilers, no.
Sorry, a mech? You can say that but….still no. Stop asking, just go watch.
😂
Giant robot zombie jesus Those who know know haha
Un resumen sin spoilers del anime. es una historia basada en la lucha de la humanidad contra los angeles q desean destruirla. pero todos desean detener a los angeles?
I love how the AMV s essentially spoiler the AMV but the show is so f****** weird that LOL. It's okay to just give you everything out of context so nothing is a spoiler 😂
Shinji get on the Eva
