You need special art materials to color photographs. If you get them wet, they just blurr out and run. What I would suggest is get a transparency or acetate to lay over the photo and art on the transparency. That way you can have fun and even make multiple personalities for the woman without ruining the photo. You can jet ink printer, use sharpies or even collage and glue on the transparency.
Lynne Wright-Glzrbug: what an excellent idea about the transparency! I was going to suggest photocopying the portrait then coloring and altering the photocopy, but the transparent overlay is an even better solution. Brava!
Renee,The picture of the lady should be preserved, she is lovely. You possibly get a copy printed and then go all Willy Wonka on the print and not the actual photo. It would be a twofer for you. Preserving an old photo and having fun with it as well.
That was such a nice auction, really chilled. You should do what you want with that photo, it's yours at the end of the day, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. If it makes you happy do it. The frame is gorgeous. Love the Alice book. Inside looks great condition and, as you say, the illustrations are beautiful. Thanks for sharing x
Hi Renee, never apologize for being wierd, I'm the same way. Yes, she does look like Will Wonka, lol, poor thing! I think in this case, you should leave the integrity of this wonderful old piece in tact, & worth much more that way! Loved all your items, old children's books are so precious. Thanks for the shopping spree!
Re: the hardened pencil erasers, try rubbing one on rough brick or concrete. Sometimes that will take off a small layer and expose softer eraser underneath. Worth a try.
A Halloween decoration idea: take old photo and prick pin holes in eyeballs. Then put light behind it where it looks like the person’s eyes are glowing. Go with the Willie Wonka idea. It’s a great idea. Love your videos!
I agree with the person who said to make a copy of the portrait and alter the copy. Then no one can complain......but I'm sure someone will find a reason to. In the end, the family didn't care enough to keep it. It's yours. Do what you want.. Love your videos!!!
Hi Renee! Again you've found some treasures....I love the books...really loved you reading the Pancake story! so darn cute...I'd love him on a shirt!! TFS! 🥰
I love your channel. I wanted to tell you that I recently found a family like you have shared with us during your unbagging videos. Someone has been throwing out big clear blue bags filled with items from a particular family....mostly about the husband and wife. I have been learning so much about these people just by going through these bags. I’m finding so many vintage items and ephemera. I LOVE paper too. I don’t mean this to sound weird but I think of you when I find more bags and start digging through them. Lol. It’s said how someone’s life is just thrown away. Yesterday I found the woman’s vintage nursing cap (which I was able to sell on eBay) along with her diploma and nursing license. Them gentlemen worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad so I’m finding lots of ephemera from that. I know they were catholic because I’m finding lots of religious items. I’m sure there will be more bags so I continue to look down that alley. I would never had though of taking these clear blue bags if I haven’t discovered your videos. Thank you And keep the videos coming!
My vote with the picture is Halloween! Paint the frame a dark purple. Make it 3D with pointed hat, flowing hair. Add vintage cardboard black cat in background. Complete the "story" with small antique broom, vintage high top shoes or boots and a book of spells or old Hansel and Gretel book.
I saw so many good treasures as you were walking around the auction. I would have needed a truck to get everything home. Thanks for letting us share in your relaxing day.
Wonka it for sure!! What a fun project that would be!! Film the project when you are doing it, what fun. Maybe glam it up with purple sequins, green sequins etc. Would be awesome. Do it Renée!!!
Definitely turn that into Willy Wonka. That would be a great rainy day project. No one should be offended because I can't imagine anyone wanting to hang that portrait. I love old portraits but that one is hysterical!! Work your magic!
How fun! And my two cents on the photo is that it was likely destined for the trash - so even done as Willy Wonka, it will live on. I say “You go girl”! And show us the end result too! Keep being you. 👍😊🇨🇦
Excellent idea Kristy! It can always be returned to its original state. I think the lady had an great sense of humor and would have gotten a kick out of it.
Nice auction buy's Rene... You should do what your little ❤ desire's with the antique photo... I personally think it's a cool idea but I know that some people frown on changing the preserved look of the original photo... Love the bunny Egg you got also really cool edition of Alice In Wonderland vintage book... Well done... Stay safe homie...👍💕🔥⚾😷
I agree with Linda. "Wonka it up!" The person in the photo is long gone. If someone found an old photo of me and wanted to turn it into an art project, I would say "Bravo" and hope they enjoy the process.
Perhaps you could turn the portrait in to Wilhelmina Wonka, Willie's lesser known sister! I think she would be marvelous!🤔 Perhaps even have a copy made before the change and you can have a brother and sister set of portraits! Like you, I am a huge Alice in Wonderland fan.😊
I went to a restaurant once in Seattle were they had old pictures on the wall that had whimsical looking monsters painted in them. I thought they were great and have thought about doing the same. Go for it on the picture of the woman.
I found a woman on Instagram (forget her name though) that takes old portraits and sews small masks on them to fit their face (per the current pandemic). It is so creative!
I am a photographer and my specialty is hand-painting black and white photos. It is an old process. My Grandmother taught me. Seeing that photo, I don't know if the coloring will work for it. Hand-tinted photos tend to be really lightly colored because the paint is transparent. So, the tie would not be bright purple. For vintage photos, I usually suggest that my clients get a copy done of the original, and I color that one, just in case they would end up regretting messing with it. Also, it is really hard to find oval frames, and especially that rounded glass. I wouldn't do anything with that. I share Your love for old paper ephemera and vintage photos. Thanks for sharing your fun picking adventures with us!
I am happy you got the portrait...I collect those as well...it does remind me of him. Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka! I did alter some portraits this year for Halloween but the portraits wont be damaged.
I would love to see the picture turned into The mad Hatter, to go with your Alice in Wonderland collection. I have several books from my childhood, that have the most whimsical drawings in them. My favourites are 3 of The Magic Faraway Tree series. Oh what a day it was when I learnt to read them myself. ❤🐨
I love this idea. Plus, if a transparency is used, as someone already suggested, you could do more than one interpretation and not damage the photo itself. Both Willie AND the Mad Hatter!
I collect these charcoal and graphite portraits. I would photocopy it and then decorate. You are super respectful of people's things and that is awesome. We have easy access to photos today but back during the time that portrait was made, it was not common to have a multitude of images. Some didn't have much money to have a photo made. This was probably one of only a handful of images of this individual. I won't even remove these from a really nice frame to use the frame. Total respect from me.
It's just reality that no one would want that displayed in their house, even a relative. So, the alternative is that it will be thrown out ... not a good thing. Change it as you want!
@@sand3882 That'll be the case when I die. No family after me so items will just be at a thrift store, estate sale or dump. Once I'm dead I wouldn't care if someone felt I had a resemblance to the wizard of chocolate and found humor in it.
I find it amazing just to think that the woman in the photo has no idea of who Willy Wonka is and can't even imagine the concept of that story because of the time period she was from. I think she'd be proud to be part of someone's joy from art. Go for it, Wonka up the photo!
Yes! Wonka idea is awesome. Please share when you do it!! I’d put a little note behind the picture in the frame for someone to find 50-100 years from now! Oh I wish I could see their reactions :)
I remember sitting on my Grandmother's porch in her big porch rocker reading the story about the pancake...lol. Really dating myself because I'm in my 70s now. 😀
I would love to see the the picture's new life as Willy Wonka. Great that you got the pencils and the Alice book. This was really a relaxed auction. Have a great weekend. I'm going to make a short video of my ebay finds as the last arrived today.
I think the portrait looks like Oscar Wilde! Ha ha! I think you should do what you want to with the picture if there is no name on the back... I wish families would put names on photos. I love Alice in Wonderland too. Great find!
I think Willy Wonka would be perfect, and you would really enjoy it then, it 's not weird it's being creative, and working with what you have. Go for it, I can't wait to see it .
great finds. I would have gotten the vintage books. I love old books to read. A lot of older authors have books out of print and then no one will get them so I have a hard time finding what I want to read.
Whether to use or save a photo really depends on whatever culture norms you were taught as a child. Some cultures consider photos sacred that capture the person essense or soul when photographed. Others view them as entertainment and more of a here and now, not a collectible. If you are worried what other's think in here (and you do as you have a sensitive soul).... then let them buy the framed photo from you if they want to save it. Have a save the photo auction sale in Ebay or something like that and those who are complaining about not altering the photo can buy it from you. Now for my personal thoughts concerning the photo, if you had not bought the photo, it would have gone in the trash. I have worked at many auctions and most often items that are not bought end up in the trash. By altering it into something more interesting, you are saving an item from the landfill. I am an upcycle artist and I create art out of discarded items 99% of the time. I see value in what Renee wants to do with the photo and I am supporting her project.
Hi Renee: don’t do anything to that photograph until you look at the back, making sure the name is not on it. If it is able to be identified, I know some family member would be thrilled to know about it.
Gene Wilder is my favorite Willie Wonka version, so I say yes go for it!! Just think if the person in the photo was able to come back and watch that colorful, magical movie and was so pleased that you thought of them and that movie together.
That pancake story was hilarious! I think updating the portrait is fine but people will complain. I use old book covers to make blank journals and people complain. The reality is that there are more old photographs, books, clothes, etc. than people want and folks get sentimental about items they find appealing. I worked in a recycling facility and witnessed the huge amount of unwanted paper items and after 35 years of thrift shopping I can list off items that flood the secondhand stores and end up in the landfill. You do what you want and just allow your skin to get a little thicker.
I've seen so many books where though worn, the covers are quite lovely... the inside of the book, not so much (if it is even still together). It must have been interesting working for a recycling facility! You probably have some great stories!
Honestly- regarding the Wonka photo- I’d put 2 red lights in her eyes and use it as Halloween decor :) I vote you do with her what you’d like. Happy Oompa-Loomping my friend!
I think I would try making a color copy of the picture at a print shop. Willy Wonka would not mind. I usually color copy photos for crafts & important stories (to me) from my local paper. The color copies or the newspaper do not turn yellow.
The hardest part for me, in watching your videos is wanting something that you picked up but then put back down! I would have bought those word flash cards!
I would take the portrait and get a copy made, then do your upcycle on that.
Great idea!!!
Guilt Free !
You need special art materials to color photographs. If you get them wet, they just blurr out and run. What I would suggest is get a transparency or acetate to lay over the photo and art on the transparency. Lynne Wright-Glzrbug: what an excellent idea about the transparency! I was going to suggest photocopying the portrait then coloring and altering the photocopy, but the transparent overlay is an even better solution. Brava!
Wonderful ideas! You can tell you have done some of that before.
A few have suggested the transparency material and yes, it is a great idea!
Brilliant!!
I say, “Wonka it up!” Why not? Who is really going to want it the way it is? I think your idea is very creative.
I would take a photocopy of the photo and turn that into the Mad Hatter, leaving the original as it is as she has a very unusual face.
Looks more like the Mad Hatter 🎩
The quilt! Hopefully it will find someone who appreciates the art that went into it.
That would definitely be my reaction if i saw a flapjack making a break for it: “Wutup pancake?” 😄
Renee,The picture of the lady should be preserved, she is lovely. You possibly get a copy printed and then go all Willy Wonka on the print and not the actual photo. It would be a twofer for you. Preserving an old photo and having fun with it as well.
Great idea 💡 👍 the copies would also allow for a chance to redo if not desired outcome.

I agree.
I think the portrait is of a man. A man dressed up as a woman. Seriously. I've seen others.
I love ❤️ how organized and clean these items appear
Me too! Everything was so clean and well-organized
Very well laid out auction. Not crammed and pleasant to be at!
Re: the hardened pencil erasers, try rubbing one on rough brick or concrete. Sometimes that will take off a small layer and expose softer eraser underneath. Worth a try.

Paint the colors on the glass, that way you'd not be damaging the photo. I made a skeleton face on an ancient family photo
Excellent idea Kristy! It can always be returned to its original state. I think the lady had an great sense of humor and would have gotten a kick out of it.
So many cool things at that auction. Love the quilt!
I think that would be so cool to make her into Willie Wonka. It’s just a picture, better to enjoy it than toss it.
Enjoyed the auction-since I do not go to them-fun to see you get some
nice things. Willie Wonka-pretty funny! Keep junking, Take care, Be safe!
I don't frequent them either. All that tension & anxiety. Gives me agita. 😊

Put some gel bats around the glass for Halloween! You could put them on packages from your sales as package toppers to share local history with others.
I say get your Wonka on!!!! I loved the pancake story too! Lol!!
It was a peaceful auction. It was well organized and clean. You got Willie, yay. ❤️
It was relaxing & had so many lovely things 👍
You bought the picture. You do with it what you want. Personally, I think your idea is fabulous!
You could have copies printed out and create a different version/outfit for every holiday or whim you come up with.
So much nice old stuff!!! Like the auction videos. Eraser tops, can be add onto pencils. The pancake book is cute. Take care.
It’s yours ! Do as you please make it Willy can’t wait to see the transformation !

Loved the Tale of the Pancake story! Yes to the Willie Wonka idea.
She will come back to haunt you I'm afraid. One hundred years after her death....yeah she'll haunt you.
And, it IS 2020 LOL
@@kgar Yeah my point...she died say in 1920.

Willy Wonka... Clever Idea HA HA I Love The Different Things You Share And The Places You Take Us!!! Quite Interesting 😃❤️👍
I collect old Victorian portraits so I would keep her just as she is! Beautiful old piece :)
Have fun. Willy Wonka sounds fun! Gotta let go sometimes and just do you! That kind of auction I’d love to go to!

That pancake story sounds like the gingerbread man. ?
Guess we have to cover the realm of all foods haha.
Exactly! When I was a kid we listened to the audio version of the Gingerbread Man who was eaten by the fox while crossing a river.

That would be funny to do!
The pancake story reminded me of the ginger bread story
I also googled refreshing old pencil erasers, quick and easy, use an Emory board and rub the eraser across that several time. It works 😀
I remember sitting on my Grandmother's porch in her big porch rocker reading the story about the pancake...lol. Really dating myself because I'm in my 70s now. 😀
That pancake story was something else!
I loved you reading the pancake story very funny.
You could get copies made of it then you could do it up for different seasons....or share with friends and family....the gift that keeps giving.
Lol! That photo you bought. I really thought that was a man! 🤣🤣🤣 And it does remind me also of Willie Wonka! 🤣🤣🤣
Try your hand Renee.
You never know right?. Great finds at a calm auction... enjoy!!!
I would love to see the the picture's new life as Willy Wonka. Great that you got the pencils and the Alice book. This was really a relaxed auction. Have a great weekend. I'm going to make a short video of my ebay finds as the last arrived today.
Still have to watch my backlog of your videos! It's on my list for the weekend!
Go for it willy Wonka found be fun a lacie high callor would cover the necklace.
You could paint the glass with the Wonka stuff! That way if buyer wants they can remove!

Have it appraised first by Dr Lori who is on youtube .The frame in itself could have some value.

's not weird it's being creative, and working with what you have. Go for it, I can't wait to see it .

Go for it! I'd love to see the altered portrait!
I love old pencils. Picture frames from the bundle.
It's your picture & if you want to Wonka it- go for it!! Let the naysayers find someone else to bother. I love the books & the pancake story 👍😊
You should totally Willie Wonka the picture! People who complain don’t understand that it could just end up in the dump! Have fun!🤗💕🦋
I don't ever critique sales, or venues... BUT THOSE WERE SOME PRETTY ITEMS, AND IN A PRETTY SETTING!!!
The items were displayed in a great manner, not overcrowded.. and the auction was not crowded either, which made it even more enjoyable!

Oh yes! Please make the portrait into Willy Wonka! The books are also very awesome! I love your channel and I just subscribed.

Good day Pancake would make a great shirt!!
I love that old pic ... that is the perfect frame I need for an old curved picture I have.
Make the picture how ever you want. I would love to see it turned into Willy Wonka.
