    A beautiful loco well videoed. Thanks for sharing. I hope you didn't get too frustrated at the folk who just hogged the frame from time to time. That lady's backside obliterated the loco at one point and that's difficult to do! That, and the occasional forest of knees, still didn't spoil the video experience. Thoroughly enjoyable.

      Um, this was only filmed in 2011, and the 844 never went to Grand Canyon state. Not even in 1912, because the 844 wasn’t even built until 1944!

    At 3:58 it looks like they used more steam for the whistle than to move the whole thing. The engine was just coasting along. likely the throttle was barely cracked. Beautiful macine.

    @ 15:37 you can see where part of the "White-wall" is gone on the wheels, because it hasnt been repainted since UP 844 got its really bad flat spots from being pushed for about 7 miles by UP 1982

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 6 років тому

      +choirboyfromhell1 - All boiler water is treated to remove the "Hard" elements and prevent scaling on the boiler tubes. This material is added to the tank cars before the engine leaves the base station. or where ever it takes on water.

    I wonder how Mr Snuffy feels about the Matter of very high Presure on the Top UP management to permit SSP steam on what was the old UP this is emosional and I call it taking a hobby and getting carried a way with it and protesting all these diesel on the train its a matter of not getting what you pay for

    Simple, if breakdown need a push not like europe and england where a branch line is 500 meters long, open country in Canada and USA is 100 miles between many stop in the west and mid west

    4 diesel units ot haul 114 cars. on the first, can't get count on second. - 844 would have pulled that no trouble

    Why do I always see Yank steamers on mainlines with a diesel in behind?

    • @Robotechnology101
      @Robotechnology101 10 років тому

      Good question, its for liability as these old steam engines could have something go unexpectedly wrong and block a mainline. They often put a diesel behind them so that in the event something does happen they won't be holding up other rail traffic, especially in instances where they might not be running on their own tracks.

      Robotechnology101 : I've always wondered if they aren't used for HEP too or does UP have a generator car in the set?

    • @Robotechnology101
      @Robotechnology101 10 років тому

      lukebccb
      They use a generator car I think it is the one with the black soot on it's roof. If you notice there is a car with black soot on it's roof, it's at 3:12.

    • @singwith
      @singwith  10 років тому +1

      Robotechnology101 It's more like liability issue.

    • @SteamKing2160
      @SteamKing2160 9 років тому

      Eagle One oh shut up Diesel trains suck they need 4 of em to haul 70 freight cars but Steam can haul 70 freight cars by itself so why don't u be a more constructive person when saying steam needs to be gone for good. If you want steam gone for good head to China they're scrapping 400 of them a year.

    • @09JDCTrainMan
      @09JDCTrainMan 8 років тому

      +Joshua Peterson Actually a modern AC diesel can easily take on 70 freight cars solo.

    • @SteamKing2160
      @SteamKing2160 8 років тому

      Have you seen one do such a feat like that? Just wondering.

    • @09JDCTrainMan
      @09JDCTrainMan 8 років тому

      No I haven't, but I've seen someone say that the FEC did an intermodal run with an SD70M-2 (A DC diesel). It was 150 cars give or take, but it was very light for it's size. As for AC traction, the SD70ACe has 191,000 lbf of starting tractive effort.

    • @SteamKing2160
      @SteamKing2160 8 років тому

      Hmm. Then why does it usually takes 3 or 4 diesels to pull a train of 70 cars? I know 3985 hauled over 130 intermodal cars just fine.
