    Just getting into this as a bedroom DJ, but have a little cash to spend on it. This is by far the most informative video I've seen, and I appreciate the straight-forwardness and lack of fancy "click the subscribe button" attitude. This bloke is the real deal, and I don't care that he's not using fancy UA-cam production lighting and microphones. Thanks man.

    funny you posted this video. I had a pair of Audio Technica LP120x show up in the post today (minor upgrade to original lp120). Yes they are budget, they're not going to be as powerful in torque (but almost), they're not going to last as long and they're made of slightly cheaper material compared to technics, RP7000, etc. But they were £245 each and these are my first turntables.
    I'm not a scratch DJ, so low torque is just fine, it'll allow me to have a light touch. I only play in my house, so I don't have to worry about them being safe to transport.
    So many people say "spend a bit more, get second-hand technics", but you've gotta start somewhere. Many of the best DJs in the world started on shitty belt drives and faulty equipment. The 120x has everything I could possibly need to have some fun with, and I'm really looking forward to giving my small vinyl collection a spin

      Couldn't agree more. I co-owned a pair of 1200's a few years ago and my mate moved to Australia and bought my share of them. I recently got the itch to mix again, and bought some LP120's. For me the most DJ friendly, well thought out, and ahead of it's time deck produced since Technics was the Vestax PDX-D3.. Powerful motor, variable pitch fader settings, digital pitch display, variable pitch bend and jog toggle control, reverse, and the first to use the removeable target light. The massive downside though was the chipwood cabinet.

    I think most of us back in the day started out with some dodgy decks, i had an SL-23, which was not too bad for a belty, paired with some dodgy pioneer which didnt even have a pitch control, then a set of KAM BDXs i picked up cheap, which were not much better. Then life took a different route, djing went out the window and i never did get to own a pair of the technics, had plenty of plays on them tho.
    I recently got back into it all, glad i kept my vinyl, one thing i never parted with. I was looking at getting the reloop 7000s, but then i came across the audio technica lp1240, pretty much the same, just another super oem. But for £200 each, brand new boxed, it was a no-brainer really, so i went with a pair of them. Basically got a pair of them for less than the price of a single reloop7000. Happy with what i got, no regrets.

    Another point about torque is the effect on back-cueing. The 1200 needs a bit of space to get up to speed, so if - for example - you want to play a record all the way out to a cold ending, then hit the very next beat dead on as you start the next record, it’s a bit of a trick. You need at least a half-turn to get to full speed, meaning you need to hit the start button sooner, and it’s fairly easy to get the timing wrong or at least imperfect. With the Reloop set to its middle position (12 o’clock) you barely need 1/8 turn, which means you can wait to hit the start button until the split second when you want to hear that first note. You can nail the segue dead on every time!

    the Technics classic decks .Many are getting on but i have never seen one break .I have broken many other turntables but on the Technics only a plastic catch for the tone arm and only because im a clumsy oaf.The feet would fall off but thats because they unwind over time especially if you dont make sure they are properly wound on which is what i kept doing.Other then that with proper use they will last a very very long time.

If you knock at the top of reloop you will hear high pitch sound but when you knock a mkii it is rock solid. Of course mkii does not worth second hand all that money they ask for all the reasons you mentioned… I totally vote for reloop…

  • @hot4futureyears2come
    @hot4futureyears2come 5 років тому +7

    The torque is low on the 1200's compared to any of the newer turntables available now . If you have not worked on a high torque turntable i would suggest doing so., it does do a great job even on mixing. i love mixing on those, great for those fast blends.

    • @FSwiftDJ
      @FSwiftDJ 5 років тому +3

      It depends if your mixing records or not , if your performance DJ yes you might need high torque motors , but too much high torque pressure on any turntable motor will not be great mixing records , Technics has balance of everything really that's why it's industry standard

    • @hot4futureyears2come
      @hot4futureyears2come 5 років тому +1

      FSwift DJ mixing has to do with more with the pitch than the torque. Which is why the pitch drive is the most important thing. High torque makes you faster getting the music to the right bpm . But if you worked on the 1200 all your life and then Blend music with a plx1000 you can do it effectively

    • @FSwiftDJ
      @FSwiftDJ 5 років тому +2

      @@hot4futureyears2come you can mix records with digital pitch even on plx1000 etc but as all club vinyl djs will say, original Analog pitch is just better with the finer pitch adjustments , they all have same pitch in Technics just that new models use a binary system that counts in block whole steps then in half etc with Analog pitch , that's why digital pitch turntable won't stay in without pitch movement every few seconds or so compared to Analog pitch , you can move the plater etc with Analog pitch to keep it in time also , with digital pitch like plx1000 it just goes all over the place
      with original Technics your not constantly chasing the tempo
      Your on point , with digital modern turntable your chasing the tempo too much that hinders your fader or mixer creative flow if I can put that more clear lol

Because it's simply better to mix vinyl on ( stays in time longer ) I agree the new Technics are not great , but the original is still the best deck for mixing or the all round DJ
      If you saying pioneer plx1000 was better ? Well I actually got them and I returned them in 1 week max , they couldn't hold a mix with vinyl simple
      Reloops are great for performance or battle for sure but not mixing real vinyl
      The design on rp 7000 is more Technics sl1200 you can see that , Vestax had great decks but was they considered club standard nope !! You never see one in any club , again we are talking original Technics sl1200 sl1210 MK2 here not the new Technics sl1200 Mk7 that is very like a failed Technics sl1210 mk5g deck

      You are wrong, I own 2 sl 1210 mk 2 and a reloop rp7000mk 2, the digital pitch is not accurate enough on the reloop, it has to be tweaked almost constantly to keep in time, unlike the 2 1210's that stay synced for ages before even the slightest drift, also the wow and flutter on the reloop is much higher, the printed specs of the reloop are wrong hence the star beside the figure of 0.01 wow and flutter , it's actually 0.1% which is 10 times higher than a Technics , this would also add to drift of speed combined with the lame pitch control of a reloop, and all those important factors aside the techns have lasted the test of time, and some, and some more ....Love to see a reloop still working in 30 years lol

Great video well put across, easy to follow your comparisons . I may be a silly idea. But here goes. I have a Rega3 and no I'm not a dj. But I love the look of the Reloop 7000 . In your opinion would this deck be any good for home Hi_Fi or am I better off sticking with the Rega 3. I don't intend replacing the Rega with the Reloop just having the pair of them . I'd like to know your take on adding it to my music room.

      I have a pair of the original rp8000's. I mix vinyl and love the lcd display of the pitch for fine beat matching. With technics and rp7000 you kind of guess how much you moved the slider. When beatmatching by ear you can quickly move the fader in tiny increments and know you didnt nudge it too much. This helps when your trying to blend records fast. I can keep 2 records matched for over a minute with the rp8000 before manipulating the platters...not all the time though...same goes for MK5.

    I like how you didn't go in to great detail about the history of the technics.. I'm sure there was other direct drive decks at the time but they weren't technics.. i saw a hip hop documentary and a budding young american dj who was forever experimenting with electronics one day went in to a shop like rumbelows and was looking for a turntable that can get up to speed very quickly and found the technics did that.. i guess technics realised what they had and improved on that turntable which meant it was going to be used pretty much everywhere.. radio stations and clubs ... that young american dj was grandwizzard theodore.. the turntable was possibly an original 1200 designed for home use.. it was the bees knees... the rolls royce of dj turntables ..everyone who dj'd had to have the technics...it was the rolex watch equivalent...

    Disagree a little bit about service ability of tech 1200's. There are a ton of third party spares and Technics is still producing spare parts for the decks. As well as this you can often fix the tables yourself because there is so much knowledge and documentation over the years on the internet. Also because these decks are STILL the industry standard, DJ repair shops know how to fix them. I have myself replaced pitch faders, and re-calibrated the pitch on a 1200 and it was dead easy. Parts are accessible and not too cheap considering how bloody long they last if looked after.

    Digital pitch Vs analog pitch ,
    You should mix some records on both turntables as test at same time Pitch them up and get them in time, leave them playing, I tell you now the reloop won't stay in time like the technics that's where today's decks fail with real vinyl
    technics sl1200 MK2 will always be the better deck turntable to mix real records but for scratch performance both but reloop better in that area with features, DVS both will be the same depending on DJ software , no doubt technics will have quality parts that stand the test of time, this reloop is great turntable, but will it stand the same test of time ?

    • @FSwiftDJ
      @FSwiftDJ 5 років тому

      @1CBRDUDE i agree , but I wouldn't say he has no clue on this subject mate , the guys been mixing on Technics decades with experience , what I would say is that yes these reloops digital pitch might stay in time for bit but your have to keep adjusting the pitch chasing it, digital pitch works in blocks there is no fine tune between each block like Analog pitch , that's why Technics pitch stays in time longer ( fine adjustments ) also Technics qualtz decks direct drive motor is just the best for mixing records there is no high torque or super etc it's just nice balance

    • @DjNikGnashers
      @DjNikGnashers 4 роки тому +3

      Yes, I was about to comment the same thing.
      The Reloop's are just as good as any other Hanpin motor turntable, so you may as well buy the Reloop's rather than spending stupid money on Pioneer PLX1000's as they are all the same under the lid.
      And, if you are more into scratching, with simple beatmatching ie dropping tunes in over 2 to 4 bars, using timecodes, then any Hanpin deck will probably be fine.
      But, for long transitions on real vinyl, you really need a Technics Mk2, M3d, or Mk5, because only those have analogue pitch sliders (which still control a digital circuit - but the adjustment is a lot finer).
      Digital pitch sliders such as the later Technics (M5g onwards) and Hanpin / super oem decks, have large steps in the pitch adjustment which causes real problems for long mixes with real vinyl.
      Also, higher torque motors, are not a good thing for delicate mixing, because the platters 'fight against' your finger drags and then slow down too much. On The original Technics, you can literally drag a nail on the platter and slow it by a tiny amount, thus a finer adjustment is possible.

    I suppose the Technics has a brake and torque adjust potentiometer below the platter. They are under small holes, and reachable specific positions, maybe trough the holes in the platter.
    In the MK5 it has, but MK2 i'm not sure.
    78RPM was using about the gramophone era, maybe the '20s thtough the '50s.
    The problem with the Technics decks are virtual, imho. They were abandoned for about a decade, and the rival brands evolved. Thats the deal. Technics are essentials in the club scene, and if you can play with them, you can use the other brands, too, they are basically the same. Technics was the godfather of the DJ turntables, and they made it etalon. All the knobs, buttons, sliders, lights in the newest models are the same positions as where Technics placed in the late '70s.

    It took 40 years for a turntable to get to the level of the mk2 technics...its now 2019 and I'd still buy a mk2 cause they are tanks...they proven themselves over time...technology is so advanced but the reloop is nothing but a copy!
