It's not a Gibson, but I wanted to check out the Maybach Lester 58, and one came up locally for sale....Here I compare some of the aspects of each guitar....Ultimately, I think the Maybach excels in every area except for looks - which obviously nothing beats a Gibson....

I’ve had a Maybach Lester 58 Honeyburst for a few years now it’s a wonderful guitar. My mate has a custom Shop Les Paul Gibson we have both compared them side by side and both agree although they are both slightly different but totally comparable. Maybach Gibson Custom Shop quality for Standard price is always how I’ve defined it
Maybach guitars are produced in the same factory that used to make the European Epiphones back in the day, if I'm not mistaken.
They were hyped in each and every Epiphone/Gibson Forum you could find. And now they‘re suddenly not restricted anymore when it comes to wood and electronics and what you get is a fantastic instrument that‘s pretty hard to beat.
A Maybach/Eastman comparison would be very informative to see. And I personally thing the Maybach looks better than that Gibson but that's mostly me not being a fan of faded sunburst finishes.
Same, I'd love to see Johno take a SB-59 for a spin
+1 on the Eastman tryout. Have to say though I don’t like the Maybach’s looks. Reminds me of my grandmother’s furniture.
@@Arthur_My_Dear your grandmother had good taste.
@@GitShiddy 😄👍
EXCELLENT...!!!
The MAYBACH Lester guitars have an excellent sound and build quality, and they look most equal to the GIBSON Les Pauls (headstock etc.). I bought one a few weeks ago, and I'm totally happy with it!!!!!!!!
I've had good luck w/ Gibsons. I do have historic R's etc. though. I do have some standard Gibsons, LP Special, and a 335 that I really like too. I've had Tokais that was nice ( LP )and played lots of guitars over my time and I can see why some want to go with other options. In the end, play what you love and love what you play!
Don Rowe been Rockin since the 70's!!! If he has not had it, he knows someone who had/has it. Kit Flying V's are Awesome.
What I've been missing from my brief stay in the UK is the variety of the second hand market. Irrelevant I know, but that's what John's story about getting a Maybach brought to my memory...
I got an Eastman sb59 (the Seymour Duncan 59 equipes one) sunburst for sale at the moment on reverb but would do a special price 😉
Maybach are hard to get in the states currently, In Europe quite common. You got a tabacco burst like Duane Allman played. Eastman easy to get in States. For me the Epipy lazarus is good bang for buck. Maybach cases are Gorgeous. Another one to mention Vintage guitar brand, inexpensive and worth at least a check out. HW/tonejunkie had one in his recent Les Paul shoot out video.
If it is for gigging, i understand the allure of the Maybach, but to my ears the Gibson sounds better, and i prefer the colour too.
It's because you haven't put the tone pickguard on the Gibson...
So glad for all your content. Been really enjoying the cloudburst Strymon take you created and have been playing some Buckethead with it. Much love John! 🔥🎶🎸🤜🤛
You have said avoid the 59 because the neck is chunky at 13;05 but the title say 58, so which is fatter?
❤it won't replace my Gibson 😊
Eastman with P90s are sweet or meaner than hell. Eastman LP cases are also gorgeous
The Maybach looks and sounds . . . intriguing! Great that you've found one that feels 'at home' for you, esp when you've already got a terrific Gibson there! Would love to try one at some point. Still very happy with my 1968 LP Custom, it won't be going anywhere, but I played an Eastman SB59/v a few weeks ago and it will definitely be my next guitar purchase - lovely guitar, I guess a bit closer to a Gibson Standard neck-wise but the ebony fretboard / bone nut / Gotoh hardware & Lollar Imperials are all an exceptional class act plus!
It's never about sound, playability is the issue and it's never addressed
I can relate. I loved my Gibson but couldn't find any good excuse to keep it after buying the "cheap" Lester. This guitar is just absurdly good. Thanks for sharing!
I keep watching your videos where you compare new Les Paul Clones to your 20 year old Standard, and can't help but wondering why you aren't comparing to a current Standard? You mention yourself how volatile Gibson's QC has been over the years, but I think today's line-up is pretty good in my opinion. I have several Epiphone Les Pauls 60s, Modern and a ES339 and a Sire H7. All lovely guitars. My Gibson 50s Standard from ~2021 (?) though is amazing. The extra Mark-Up on that Greenie Standard is bs, I'll give you that. :D
Great playing
You really have the bass side bridge pick up low. Does the bridge PU have a lot of low end?
Very interesting. I have to say that sonically - through my monitors - the Gibson wins hands down. If the Maybach plays and sustains better then I'd swap the pickups for those in the Gibson because the Maybach sounds dark and closed.
I agree, the gibson sounds more open and clear, and closer to the under wound closer to single coil player's sensibilities. However all the stuff he is discussing about the advantages are in construction , playability and weight. I have a feeling either you will see John either replacing the pickups in the Maybach, or considering the fact that he is not as much of a fan of the sunburst, he might end up with another Maybach with a more faded burst AND replacement pickups.
@@christopherjbutler more to the point, Gibson must be quite p*****off at another brand copying the LP!
@@vincentl.9469 They always are pissed. if you remember the not well received by their customer base hard sell of "play authentic" ads. And lots of companies are doing it, not even mentioning the fringe chinese brand names like Firefly.
We can't get Maybachs easily in the U.S., but Heritage guitars are comparable. I own a Heritage H-150, and it's as good as a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul. Plus it corrects the bad Gibson headstock design with a trapezoidal one that doesnt require a string butler to stay in tune.
I think Heritage might even be a step up from what I've heard?
@@johnnathancordy I think so, but many Americans can't get over the headstock differences. Heritage even has an Artisan Aged Core Collection that would be comparable to a Murphy Lab for $4700 (insane, but still thousands cheaper than a Murphy Lab).
Gibson Les Pauls are traditionally "heavy". The weight reduction is fairly new thing. I'll gladly keep my Les Pauls. I looked on Reverb and you can get a used LP and Maybach for about the same amount. Another guitar to look at is a Heritage which are made in the old GIbson custom shop factory though they might be too heavy for some people. If I ever come across a Maybach I'll definatley check one out of curiosity. Cheers
Hi Mr John Nathan Cordy, if just maybach lester was like tokai ls1r9 with no chamberd . Please are you agree with me i wold to buy one les paul for all my life and not expensive for some one in Morocco like me it s alot of money 2000 dollars its my earn in 6months in my work
I like the sound of the Gibson 🤔
Me too. Through my monitors the Gibson sounds open and the Maybach very closed down.
What about an Epiphone and put some Gibson custom PUS ?
The Maybach sounds a little brighter but both sound really good. Keep whichever one inspires you to play it more.
I'd love for you to be able to play my Jukebox SC.
Keep the Gibson if you can. It will hold its value better and certainly appreciate in years to come. The Maybach will never be able to match that aspect of the Gibson.
They sounded the same to me and I think the Gibson is prettier. Weight and playability are huge factors though. I have a Gibson 04 Standard Limited Edition with burstbuckers.... I wish it was lighter and had lower output pups... 🤷♂️
I like the Gibson's tone a lot better, sweet Gibson Les Paul sounds great and rings out so nice.
It might sound superficial but Gibson's voice in the history of rock music cannot be substituted or beaten and for me is extremely important. Having Gibson on my headstock will never not make me happy. Maybach and Eastman just cannot do that. That and the fact that my Gibson SG and Les Paul are the best guitars I have ever played (and I have played a bunch in my many decades) mean my search is over thankfully. Would I love to have a Maybach, absolutely? Will I get that warm feeling in my soul seeing it on my headstock, nope.
Maybach make very good and "reasonably" priced guitars......something Gibson couldn't always say they do.....
But chambred i hope they make also no chambred
I just came across Panos Antonio Arvanitis here on UA-cam.
I wanna throw my guitars in the trash and become a monk after seeing him play.
Hopefully, I'll treat myself to a maybach LP soon, but it's not gona replace my real LP. Fortunately, my day job is not as a musician, so I can afford to own both 😏😉
How are these guitars not patent infringements?
They (gibson) only have a patent on the headstock I believe?
@@johnnathancordy I think there was some big case between Ibanez and Fender in the 80s that might tell more about it. But I find it odd these companies can copy the EXACT look of another guitar, and get away with it. (I don't even like the looks of a Les Paul very much.) Certainly car companies can't do that.
1200 british pounds for a good used MAYBACH Lester is a very good price, congratulations.
Right? They go for over $2,000 usually, almost as much as a Gibson.
@@pharmerdavid1432 Yes, sir! If you want/order a new one, you have to wait 3 - 4 month for delivery.
The Maybach sounded much better, clearer and better sustain.
You want a Historic Re LP and you will eventually get one so stop horsing around with these alternatives.
In my opinion, you made a good decision. I sold Gibson Les Paul Classic 2014 and bought Harley Benton SC-550 II PAF, a much better and significantly cheaper guitar.
No it's not.
Cope harder.
Bollocks 😂😂😂
Harley Benton may punch above their price bracket, but they don't touch most $1200 guitars. Now there's not a MASSIVE leap in build quality these days between $1.2k and $3k, so diminishing returns is in effect surely. You got a more than adequate instrument for the price - but not a Gibson level instrument. All memes aside, Gibson can beat the quality of any $400 guitar.
When it comes to the Les Paul style guitar, there's soo many brands that are better than a "Gibson" Les Paul standard. But when it comes to LP custom models, Gibson and even Epiphone to some extent, are hard to beat. Other than Tokai or E.S.P./LTD I can't think of another LP custom style guitar I'd even want?
you can give me your gibson then
So it seems like you'll be keeping the Maybach for good as I imagine resale wise not as good as Gibson . But can't wait for you to try an Eastman. Please don't try the stupid PRS NF 53 with its ugly bird inlays and ugly neck. I won't leave the birds alone! It's Paul that needs to leave them alone!
Maybach sounds too bright for me.
The LP sounds just as good and looks far better, IMHO.
Light guitar don't equal good guitars. If 1 lb of weight makes a difference to you on a gig then you need to go to the gym.
@@AlexVonCrank ^^^This ^^^
@@AlexVonCrank Absolutely.
Why do Brits say “Lez Paul”?
Because Mo Paul doesn’t sound right
@@bunfightspecialist4502 it's kind of different when it's a persons name. His name was Lester, not Lezter.
Guys it is John's ENGLISH UK accent. His Wife has a Great Accented Voice too.
@@bunfightspecialist4502 Lez be clear... maybe you heard wrong and they are saying "sod off"?
I think it originally was short for Leslie here in the UK, so "Lez" makes sense. Lester is not common in the UK, so when people here see "Les" they automatically pronounce it "Lez"... ?
I like the Gibson better.
Good thing it's ultimately up to you to buy the product you want to buy
Gibson is better 😊
the Gibson sounds better, it's not even really close.
I wanted to like the Maybach but it doesn't come close sonically.
Nah….keep the Gibson…
Gibson dont build the best Les Pauls, you pay only for the logo and all the managers, not the guitar builders. Please, dont buy ever gibson guitars, they are really, really bad quality and extremely overpriced!
I'm sorry you cannot beat the Gibson tone there's no other guitar that sounds like to Gibson sorry
Maybe your Gibson not myne…….you put out to many videos man, not all are useless but this comparison is goofy. Maybe you’d change your mind if Gibson threw you some money ……lol
Gibson sent me some pedals to demo....And offered me artist discount...Doesn't really change my opinion on the two guitars I have here
@@johnnathancordy yeah stick to your guns. Your review doesn't change my opinion either!
