If you got recurring reminders of hourly or daily, imagine how ugly your calendar looks like.
Calendar, Notes, and Reminders were the only things I needed from iOS 18 lol hopefully Apple Intelligence makes these productivity items even MORE helpful
That's it. Goodbye Fantastical, it has been nice knowing you!
I thought about this as well.
That Calendar is way too expensive though. I’m currently using Readdle Calendars and way cheaper 😅
If only iCal’s summary looked like fantastical. I hope iCal gets a big upgrade. 🤞🏼
My thoughts exactly. I’ll be saving over $100 per year by moving from Todoist + Fantastical to stock iOS apps.
Great video, finally someone who doesn't just repeat what has been said at the keynote.
You're the only one who shows details like being able to tap 'subtasks' and it will take you to the appropriate list..small but awesome addition!!
Thank you Mike 🙏🏻
Bro, these apple related videos are so helpful 🙏. And your explanation is beautiful as always ❤👌
Thanks for sharing .
Thanks for your professionalism and value you provide us.
Thank you for this. I have learned a lot regarding apple related services through your videos.
I've been hoping/waiting for this integration to occur. This is great news!!! Thank you👍🏽
finally, waited so long for reminders in calender. Really looking forward to
This is really great news and while its long overdue its VERY welcome. Thnaks for the video showing what it can do,
I was waiting for this video since the launch of iOS 18 👍 Thanks Peter 🙏🙏
that was 3 days ago
What! This is a great update reminder and calendar, been wanting this for years.😊
This is what I was waiting for. For yearsssss! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for demonstrating this. This workflow is very similar to what I've been doing in Fantastical, but without the natural language input. Not sure yet if this native solution will replace Fantastical for me (I do use some of the other Fantastical features), but I will definitely be giving it a try. Fantastical is very expensive, so the question is whether that value is still there over these native apps (for me).
This is great. As someone who only uses the apple stock apps I cannot wait to download and use
Thank you mate, your review is excellent. I live in my calendar and reminders all day every day. Personally looking forward to using this integration on Mac/iPhone but your iPad version is all I need to be excited about it. Thanks again.
Thank you! I am also excited to use the apps on my Mac and iPhone, but I only have the three devices and so I installed the beta on the least mission-critical one. Hopefully in the future I'll have some demo devices.
Wonderful education, Peter Akkies.
I am happy I clicked the suggestion to watch.
Great attiude/posturing, clarity and flow in speech, and revealing of potential use cases and insights.
Grazie mille
Excellent video. Finally Apple did it. I was waiting for this integration since iPhone 3…
Finally, they did it!
For me, reminders should be a smooth integration between a to do/calender/shopping list, with check boxes that don’t disappear. I’m sure there’s already a way this works, but I bet it’s easier now. Plus if it’s an appointment, add a phone, address, notes all in calender and searchable, including mail integration.
Thanks for sharing this! Do these features described only work for iCloud mail accounts?
Thanks for the video. I wish you had gone into Shortcuts. What did they add? It would be great to automate Lists in Shortcuts. As of iOS17, you can only automate individual Reminders, but not Lists.
This is huge!
Hallelujah!
that feature is the biggest plus for me
Its about time this happened
Finally!!!!
Can’t wait to see what Things 3.0 will do with this!
Is the sections in "Scheduled" now collapsable as we can do with the "Today" view or lists with sections? Thank you for the great video!
RE the Deadline feature, I’ve used the Early Reminder feature as an Intent Date for a while now and it works pretty well in that regard
That works if you just go off notifications to remind yourself what to do. But I want to see a list of my tasks that I've planned for today and you can't make a list with reminders that have an early reminder set.
Finally!
Lunch with Fran sounds fun :))
It was fun! Hahahaha
Hi Peter
Considering the update we are going to get for Reminders app and its integration with calendar app,
do you think its still better to buy and use Things 3 app or use the Reminders app ?
I really want them to add both When and Deadline dates. It’s essential for me to use those apps.
Agree
This is looking great. I use both calendar and reminders a LOT. What about adding to ‘sub-lists’ reminders from calendar?
I don't exactly understand your question
Because the reminders have no duration I will still use them as deadline and create an event in my "action" calendar for the duration/intended action time.
Excellent overview! Will you do one for all the calender news as well?
I thought about it but there is just a redesigned month view, I think. Haven't discovered any other changes yet.
FINALLY
finally 🥰
How about interactive reminders widget? Did they change it to old (non-interactive) version? After iOS 17 update there is a problem with accidental reminder marking, becouse any accidental touch of the screen causes a risk of marking reminder as a "complete".
This looks so good. It would be perfect if we could only set a reminder duration for time blocking. I still think many will drop their Fantastical subscriptions.
ha, probably missed that but ticked-off reminders are dissapearing completely from the calendar view or they are left in there but crossed-out?
great vid by the way!
Looks like I forgot to show that in this video… oops. I did show it on social media like Threads. Anyway yes, they stay on the calendar but are greyed out.
Is this the end of Fantastical?
Great video! Greetings from Peru!
It might also be the end of Todoist and Things.
I prefer the Fantastical interface and I like some small Fantastical features a lot, but I imagine that as the difference in capability grows smaller, many people will not want to pay for Fantastical anymore.
First it need to support colors imported from google calendar
Not yet, can’t set duration for reminders and there is no Natural language event creation, maybe only through new Siri but it should be on the regular interface, Fantastical has been doing it for years.
Loved watching it! How did you do the emojis next to the events like flight and calendar?
Glad you enjoyed it! The flight emoji gets added by Flighty, an app I use to track my flights that automatically puts my flights on my calendar. The calendar emoji shows up for all all-day events, I think, to distinguish them from reminders/to-dos.
Hi, do you prefer reminder on iOS 18 or Things3?
Thanks Peter for such a great video. This integration is a game changer for me. Any chance you know how to move all the projects nicely from Things 3 to Reminders? I found shortcuts on reddit but it doesn't seem to work anymore.
Thanks Mikhayl. No, unfortunately I don't know of a way to do that.
@@PeterAkkies Thank you for your reply. I think I will just do it manually then
exciting! will you update your courses?
Yep! Probably around the time of the official iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia releases. (New features tend to change a good amount while in beta and I don't want to shoot at a moving target.)
Thank you! Is there a way to filter a search for Completed tasks in Reminders? The search function provides the “searched term’s” originally assigned list name, but doesn’t indicate that it is completed. I’d like to be able to reference the date and time I last completed things- and it would also be nice to see this in a calendar view.
Not exactly, but when you search in the Reminders app, there is a separate search result section for completed items.
Thanks Peter. For durations, could you test if the [xx minutes] feature works? With Fantastical, if you create a task in Reminders and add [45 minutes] in the title, it would show as 45 minutes in duration in Fantastical
There is no such feature in Apple’s native apps, unfortunately.
Hey Peter , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
ALL I want from Reminders is the ability to hide the notes field. That's all. If they allowed that I'd be able to completely switch from Notion to just using apple apps. In Notion (and previously Things, and previously to Things, Todoist) I take notes, consistently regarding the projects and tasks I'm working on, or waiting for. Without them, I forget. And without being able to hide the notes field in Reminders it just makes it too messy and complicated to use. So sad. Such a simple thing to do, but I've been asking for years!!!!
Hahaha, die zachte 'nice' in het begin. Topvideo weer!
Ja volgens mij was mijn editor er heel trots op dat hij die subtiele toevoeging had bedacht. Hahahaha. En dankjewel!
@@PeterAkkies hahaha! 😂
Question Peter: first of all thank you for this….
You mentioned that the calendar view can get a bit crowded. But in the iPhone isn’t there a way to expand the view? Also isn’t there a way to click on it to open a larger view? Thanks!
Not sure yet-I just have this installed on iPad for now. Will eventually get it on my iPhone, but not with the first beta.
Hi nice video, what screenrecording software you use? Thank you
Thank you! I record with Screenflow
Great video. Unfortunately reminders not completed today do not show up the next day. Like in the today-section of Reminders.
True. And thank you!
Great video. With the increasing integration between Calendar & Reminders, and AI on the horizon, I’m wondering if I should leave Things 3? I’ll be keeping my eyes on this.
Things’ When and Deadline dates are not in Reminders yet. It makes it a no go for me
Depends on your personal preference-I prefer Things’s When and Deadline dates and Things’s interface, so it’s an easy choice for me. But many people love to use Apple’s native apps.
@@PeterAkkies @mr_red13 I haven't switched yet but it is interesting to see Apple's encroachment on the functionality of third-party apps like Things 3.
Hi Peter, thank you for your instruction. One question, I'm an Omnifocus 3 user and considering to upgrade to v4. However, now, Apple has combined reminders and calendars, and it seems like the result is quite good. From your point of view, would you suggest upgrading to Omnifocus 4 or keeping use of new reminders?
OmniFocus 4 is a much more advanced task management system, so it really depends on your preferences: what level of detail do you like in your task management? I prefer to track things with some detail, so I prefer to use apps like Things, Todoist, or OmniFocus myself.
In my mind the Reminders date and time are just the date (and time) that you would like to be reminded. It's not a "due" date. You can move reminders around willy-nilly and that's ok because it's your choice. Calender appointsments OTOH are specific events at a defined date/time/location, perhaps with other people, with the option of one or more early alerts. These are more anchored than reminders because they tend to represent real-world event -- tho you can set up a Calendar event just involving yourself (but then... isn't that just a reminder?). I'm not sure how mixing Reminders into the Calendar app will help. For now it just looks like clutter. We'll have to see. Hopefully this is not an omen that Apple is doing away with the Reminders app in future releases.
Many people think of "reminders" in the Reminders app as to-dos. But if you just think of them as literal notification to remind you of something, then I see where you're coming from.
Looks interesting... but I don't know if it will replace my beloved Things3, maybe for personal tasks? What do you think, Peter?
I still think Things 3 is the best task management app for most people who use Apple devices.
I wonder if I'll be able to create a bunch of reminders using a checklist in apple notes, using a shortcut or apple intelligence/siri itself. Then, once completed, ask siri to check reminders that are done and mark the checklist inside the notes as done.
Let’s hope so!
Thank you for the great video. How about the tasks I check off as completed? Do they stay visible on the calendar or do they disappear? And if I don't check off a task scheduled for a particular day, does it automatically move to the next day as an overdue task?
Damn did I forget to show that? I demonstrated that in a short clip on Threads. Anyway, yes, they stay on your calendar. And I haven't tested the overdue bit yet… I will do that.
Thank you very much
Reporting back: overdue tasks stay in their original spot on the calendar.
@@PeterAkkies thank you for the verification Peter!
Has Apple added the ability to repeat a task from completion, or only repeat from due? Meaning, I want to do X action 3 days after I complete it. So if it takes me 5 days to actually finish it and mark it completed, it’ll generate the next task 3 days later (and not 1 day later).
No, that is unfortunately not possible.
Can a reminder run over multiple days? This looks good.
No it can't. You can just set one date and optionally one time. And reminders don't have a duration.
I have just one question. Does it notify you that like an alarm because many times if my phone is on silent, I forget about the reminders.
They are time-sensitive notifications, which are more prominent than other notifications but won’t cut through silent mode.
So, with regard to Apple Intelligence, is your feeling that now this is a major reason to switch back to all Apple Native apps from OmniFocus and Bear?
I wouldn't say so, assuming those third-party apps will also offer good integrations with Siri / Apple Intelligence. But that's all quite a ways away.
I guess I'll treat deadlines as events and tag them accordingly.
Ok, no more in hypothesi but in practice: for me, it's an event and a reminder to. So I get to check it if I fulfill it (do something before such and such) on the other hand the set deadline as an event is of course where it is.
Has there been an update in iOS 18 to set Reminders to move to completed at the end of the day instead of immediately? Things allows this though I'd like to try using Reminders but it hides my completed Reminders and then populates next week's repeat reminder right away so I can never see my progress
No that's not possible unfortunately
But can you get events from the calendar to appear in the reminders app? I would love this feature.
No
Drag. Thanks for letting me know anyway Peter.
I think the iOS 18 is going to change the demand for iPad mini
What do the widgets look like? Do the reminders show up on the calendar widget like google cal & tasks do?
Yep they do
can you make reminder in reminders and have it show in calendar tho?
Yes that’s the idea
All these years I’ve been waiting for this. Then quietly and subtly Apple negates the need for Fantastical and all those other apps I’ve been playing around with for the integration over the years.
Can you integrate reminders from other apps as well like Microsoft ToDo? I read somewhere on Twitter it might be possible but maybe only for whole day reminders. Would be great to get your perspective :)
Hmm. I'm not sure how that would work. You could perhaps create a calendar subscription in Microsoft To Do and add that to Calendar? Not sure.
@@PeterAkkies So what I have read in some forum thread was that if you have Outlook as an account and switch reminders on then they appear in the reminders app. These reminders then also are visible in the calendar. But I wasn‘t able to verify and I am curious :)
@@floriankuemmel Interesting… I will test this. Thanks for the tip!
@@PeterAkkies And the thing they said was still broken is that it only shows reminders as all-day reminders eventhough they are scheduled. So if you are also interested would love to get your perspective and if it is of interest to your audience might be a nice additional video. :)
I’m curious about this too. I know if I connect my Exchange account, I can see my O365 calendars in Calendars and ToDos in Reminders, but the Reminders feature-set is very limited on these accounts. Wonder if these features will be available or blocked as well.
Does the Calendar up next widget also show the reminders?
Yes it does
@@PeterAkkies thank you for the informative videos!
Does Reminders now support natural language input? That's what has stopped me from switching over from Todoist.
No it does not, unfortunately
@@PeterAkkies Ughh that sucks. Hope they introduce it before the public release.
Goodbye Fantastical!
Now they need to update Mail and make it better!
Good, informative video. The AI stuff is pretty scary though. Not sure how good it is that Apple is reading your private stuff making suggestions. 😬😬😬😬?
They're trying really hard to protect your privacy. Seems way more legit than competitors' AI products. And Apple themselves really cannot read your data
@@PeterAkkies I hope you are correct. We’re in a heck of a mess if you aren’t.
What i NEED is a way of forwarding an email to Reminders!
I can do that from the Spark email app.
If you highlight some text in an email in Apple Mail, and use the share button. You can create a reminder that links to that email - strange implementation, but it works.
You can drag and drop it
@@ChillumTYou can also ask Siri to remind you about an email while viewing it too
I'm on the beta. "Deadline" shows up as "Due Date" for me. I wonder if it's regional wording variant
You know what, that really could be the case. Either way, it's good to consider whether to use the date as a do date or a due date.
@@PeterAkkiesBeen waiting for this feature too. Although, I wouldn't find it as useful now. I find its use case when I was in school because deadline and do date are much more necessary.
How the widgets of calendar | reminder look with this new iOS?
The Calendar app’s widgets look the same as the Calendar app except smaller. Reminders show on the widget too.
Thanks! That’s what I wanted from Apple 😂, one more…do you recommend install the public beta? I know this beta for regular users is not recommended, but the public beta?
@@erickdiaz7954 This beta is pretty buggy. I can't say yet about the public beta until it comes out
I might be the only one who doesn’t want Reminders and Calendar integration. Is there a way to opt out?
Yes, you can uncheck “scheduled reminders” in the sidebar and you won’t see them.
@@PeterAkkies Thanks for the quick reply
I just want to scream at Apple that "WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?"
I get it. Apple sometimes takes forever to do stuff. But usually once they do it, they do it well.
Hi Peter, great video! Very minor point @ 3:15 when you talk about the change of date wording to Deadline - it is currently like that in iPadOS 17 as well. You seemed to be saying or at least implying this was new this year?
Huh… I could swear it said due date before. Now I'm wondering whether it's a coincidence that my notes with math in the Notes app are called Maths Notes rather than Math Notes. Thanks for letting me know Kimball.
Just to be clear (if it wasn’t already) I was explicitly referring to your long-press comment
For the date issue…. Set a deadline. Then set a reminder for that event. Like “24 hours before”
You can do that, but I don't always want to decide immediately when I'm capturing a task when I am going to work on it.
@@PeterAkkies I understand - and I do like your thinking...
But with either method, you'll still be having to decide when you're going to work on it.
I think they need to make it easy to edit using either option. So for example, I set a task for my calendar to be done by Friday noon, and I set a reminder for Wednesday, at 6... Well on Monday, something came up and I'd rather start Thursday morning at 10. So I should be able to go in and edit that reminder.
Likewise, in your scenario - I set a deadline for Friday noon, but a date of Wednesday at 6 - I should be able to go in and edit that date and change the date easily.
I know it's not using the wording you're using, and not the same way of entering it, but I do think it is the same idea, and easy to do either way.
I may be missing something, but in that scenario can’t you just drag the date reminder to another time on the calendar?
@@geoshock1Sure. But for what hes talking about in his video.
He is talking about setting a “deadline” - a hard “needs to be done by” date and time, and then also setting a “but I want to start working on it” date and time.
So like I have a paper due for school on Friday by Noon. It’s going to take me 4 hours to do it. But I have meeting Friday morning. So I’ll set a reminder or start date for Wednesday at 10 am. So that if I don’t get to it, I still have the rest of Wednesday and Thursday.
He wants the ability to set two dates for a task. I think (especially for the concept of why you’d want two dates) you can set a due date, but then a reminder. I think it’s basically the same thing.
I am done with Microsoft; I am all in Apple’s native apps
You may have addressed this in the video, but isn’t this what Fantastical has been able to do for years with Reminders integration? Or is this better?
Yeah Fantastical and other apps have had this feature for years
And still no ability to archive or complete a list…
Yeah that would really help
apple killed trello, fantastical and things with this update. Thanks
How come my phone is not showing this new update?
It's in beta right now, coming to the public in the fall
Shortcuts becoming less relevant because of Apple intelligence he’s going to take a while since it is only available for iPhone 15 pro
Title says iOS, you’re showing iPadOS
Yes yes, I knew someone would point this out, but it's basically the same and many people don't know the difference anyway
This is not iOS …
I know Robert, but most people don’t know the difference, the features are almost the same, and I don’t have a spare iPhone to install the beta on at the moment.
@@PeterAkkies my point is that the calendar view is obviously different on an iPhone vs an iPad because of the difference in screen size. I clicked the video expecting to see what the calendar looks like on an iPhone with iOS.
Finally!
