I want one. I should start dropping hints to the XYL now so in 3 to 5 years she may let me have one lol. The 7300 still going well as is the 9700. I am looking at setting up a remote station down south on top of a friends farm about 40KM south of my QTH, its a 400ha sheep and beef farm and 280M above sea level and less than 1KM away from the sea. It has very low RF noise there. The 7300 would be nice to go down there for the remote setup. Thanks for the info. 73 ZL4SY Norm

Sure a nice radio! I just walked out to the yet uncollected skip in the yard and pulled out the better few DVI monitors I could not even give away! One thing I would like to know: How well are the unused antenna sockets earthed? For me to know what is going on on the bands is something I would like to see on my standard 4k monitor. Then I need ONLY one audio out and perhaps a mouse is something I prefer over a tagged touch screen. Still good work and kudos to them Icom engineers giving it all.

The IC-905 uses a custom PoE setup to power the RF deck and is why it must be connected directly to the control head. With this IC-7760 there is no PoE as both the RF desk and the controller have their own power source.

No one can place outside a 6000 $ RF deck requiring AC power by their tower. The control head has at most a 9 m cable. The placement of a RF deck 9 m closer to the antenna does not significantly improve antenna matching or coax loss. This is a top end HF transceiver marketed to Contesters and Dxers. Icom needs to release DR-3@2 KHz, BDR and RMDR before serious Contesters will consider it.

@@RSwrightMD the understanding here is that you can use an ethernetcable of max abt 328 ft, abt 90m. According to the skinny information, it can be ised within a network, meaning that you probably can even get it further away.
"A control cable (3 m, 9.8 ft) is supplied with the transceiver, and a commercially available LAN cable* can be used to install the RF deck in a more remote location. It enables the RF deck to be placed in a rack or other location away from the station desktop"
Now, many of use would love this, especially if you happen to have a neighbor that has asked a PV installation cowboy to install an S9+ noiosy environment up to 200 MHz.
So yes, there are people who can locate the deck at a different place. Now, I have a 7851 so there won't be a replacement action but to be honest, having it split, is a wonderful idea for some people. And yes, that S9+ noise is from my neighbor.
(Busy trying to fix this with him)

It's basically what I predicted it would be. A modern SDR replacement for the 7851. Only thing I missed was the remote RF deck. Not that it's cheap but it's significantly cheaper than I thought it would be. I assumed it would be more than what the 7851 was when it was discontinued. Wow, was I wrong. It's less than half of what the 7851 was going for. I already have my back channels preorder in. Countdown to delivery has begun. And since I'm a follower of Dave Jones (EEVBlog) from down under I live by his principle. "Don't turn it on, tear it apart." Can't wait to tear this beast apart.

@MrAnon-g7m it definitely is not a replacement, people that have the 785x generally will recognize this as a step back and what others may have said too: it's more between the 76xx and the 78xx series. Say a 7700 replacement.

While I love the remote RF deck design, I don't see enough difference between this and IC-7610 to warrant double the cost. I'd instead use my computer to control the 7610 remotely. they won't kill off the 705 anytime soon.
The 7610 remove controlled is by the way different from a head. Latency comes into play here and we'renot eventalking about the way you control it.
The 7100 can be used with the separated head and additional hardware so that can be done already for quite a few years.I know people having the head and some hw in the suitcase while the rig itself stays in the Netherlands. Works pretty well for voice/D*

  • @g0fvt

I am most confused by the suggested retail price. Taking the example of the 7300 for instance it is about £1000 here in the UK but with 20% sales tax it is about £1200. Japanese domestic market versions (not identical) are available for about 30% less.
Not sure how much this radio will retail for here in the UK.
High duty cycle is attractive, I am sure part of the equation is that with a remote head radio more fan noise is tolerable.
Looks to be priced keenly in comparison to similar rigs.

I certainly don't like the new Yaesu radio's.

@MrAnon-g7m I was in the market for a radio late last year as the front-end of my FT-2000D had (again) died.
I really tried hard to love the FTDX-101 but it just wasn't there. I don't like menu systems being the primary way to access functions on a radio and it just felt too plasticky for me, having grown up coveting the Yaesu radio's of the 70's and 80's. I knew I'd missed the boat on a new TS-990 but one came up and I bought it.
There isn't a lot I don't like about it. You rarely need to go into the main menu as there are physical controls for most things you want to modify during operation and holding a button brings up a context-relevant dialogue with graphics that make sense. Having designed user interfaces myself in the past, I'm really not a fan of software engineers developing UI's for software engineers - the same applies to so many modern domestic UI based systems; get actual real-world users to test it, give feedback rinse and repeat until you have something usable. I digress, this is a hobby-horse for me. I love the second display that Icom have also adopted in this model. The noise reduction in the TS-990 is REALLY good. I hope they give us a successor to the 990.

My problem with a lot of modern transceivers that are dependent on PCs is that they use Windows not Linux. Considering that a lot of Amateurs use Linux and that Linux is often the preferred choice for techies (which a lot of Amateurs are) the major manufacturers should cater for Linux users.

@@HamRadioDX Right. Now we’re up to 10k USD and limited to 10w. Many people want the 2m/70cm to simply get on a repeater, and their main activity is HF. So that’s why people are griping. I love ICOM and think this new rig is outstanding, but I understand the griping. I’m just pointing out that there is a market for this, and if ICOM doesn’t provide it to protect other products, someone else will. I use a 705 with many triplexers and three amplifiers (hard rock 50+ and UHF/VHF amplifiers). I remotely control via sdr-control. If this new QRP all-band yaesu can be similarly controlled remotely, I can easily swap out the 705 with existing hardware to gain dual receive. While not an inexpensive setup, it offers less expensive upgrade paths but obviously fewer features. It’s kind of a modern 7100 replacement, which people are looking for.

With over 100,00 7300's already sold and no doubt tens of thousands of 9700's already sold, I don't think Icom would be too worried about losing any sales of either model to a new radio that combined both. The 7300 and 9700 will be eventually replaced. hence the need for a new radio to replace them. The 7760 is not the answer.
