I want one. I should start dropping hints to the XYL now so in 3 to 5 years she may let me have one lol. The 7300 still going well as is the 9700. I am looking at setting up a remote station down south on top of a friends farm about 40KM south of my QTH, its a 400ha sheep and beef farm and 280M above sea level and less than 1KM away from the sea. It has very low RF noise there. The 7300 would be nice to go down there for the remote setup. Thanks for the info. 73 ZL4SY Norm

No one can place outside a 6000 $ RF deck requiring AC power by their tower. The control head has at most a 9 m cable. The placement of a RF deck 9 m closer to the antenna does not significantly improve antenna matching or coax loss. This is a top end HF transceiver marketed to Contesters and Dxers. Icom needs to release DR-3@2 KHz, BDR and RMDR before serious Contesters will consider it.

@@RSwrightMD the understanding here is that you can use an ethernetcable of max abt 328 ft, abt 90m. According to the skinny information, it can be ised within a network, meaning that you probably can even get it further away.
"A control cable (3 m, 9.8 ft) is supplied with the transceiver, and a commercially available LAN cable* can be used to install the RF deck in a more remote location. It enables the RF deck to be placed in a rack or other location away from the station desktop"
Now, many of use would love this, especially if you happen to have a neighbor that has asked a PV installation cowboy to install an S9+ noiosy environment up to 200 MHz.
So yes, there are people who can locate the deck at a different place. Now, I have a 7851 so there won't be a replacement action but to be honest, having it split, is a wonderful idea for some people. And yes, that S9+ noise is from my neighbor.
(Busy trying to fix this with him)

  • @k6usy
    @k6usy 20 днів тому +4

The IC-905 uses a custom PoE setup to power the RF deck and is why it must be connected directly to the control head. With this IC-7760 there is no PoE as both the RF desk and the controller have their own power source.

It's basically what I predicted it would be. A modern SDR replacement for the 7851. Only thing I missed was the remote RF deck. Not that it's cheap but it's significantly cheaper than I thought it would be. I assumed it would be more than what the 7851 was when it was discontinued. Wow, was I wrong. It's less than half of what the 7851 was going for. I already have my back channels preorder in. Countdown to delivery has begun. And since I'm a follower of Dave Jones (EEVBlog) from down under I live by his principle. "Don't turn it on, tear it apart." Can't wait to tear this beast apart.

    • @MrAnon-g7m

But it's not a modern replacement for the 7851 is it? It's hardly got any knobs or dials on it. It's not a modern replacement for the 7851. It's a replacement for the 7610 which is already still in production. And to put the boot in, they want to add a few grand on top of it when you can buy a 7610 for a lot less. This company becomes more and more like Apple every week. Now they gone and done it again they've done a mistake. They've made a radio that nobody will buy, a few people might buy this Radio that have got money but most people won't bother times are hard in the world at the moment and if we're gonna be expected to buy a new Radio, it should have VHF UHF And HF on it. I don't know why this is so hard for manufacturers to understand we want a multi band homebase and we're not getting it. We're getting another Radio like the one we've already got. It's like iPhones they're trying to sell you another iPhone when you've got a perfectly good iPhone already works. What perfectly good reason could anyone have to sell something like a 7610 or 7851 and going buy that? I'd rather buy a second hand 7851 then buy that thing. The only good thing that's gonna come out of this Radio is hopefully some stupid people out there with decide to sell their lovely 7851 cheap and going by that junk. Then I will buy their 7851 laughing my head off while they have basically traded in a really good radio with lots of loves and dials and everything that a radio should look like at that price for that monstrosity 😂😂😂😂

I really tried hard to love the FTDX-101 but it just wasn't there. I don't like menu systems being the primary way to access functions on a radio and it just felt too plasticky for me, having grown up coveting the Yaesu radio's of the 70's and 80's. I knew I'd missed the boat on a new TS-990 but one came up and I bought it.
There isn't a lot I don't like about it. You rarely need to go into the main menu as there are physical controls for most things you want to modify during operation and holding a button brings up a context-relevant dialogue with graphics that make sense. Having designed user interfaces myself in the past, I'm really not a fan of software engineers developing UI's for software engineers - the same applies to so many modern domestic UI based systems; get actual real-world users to test it, give feedback rinse and repeat until you have something usable. I digress, this is a hobby-horse for me. I love the second display that Icom have also adopted in this model. The noise reduction in the TS-990 is REALLY good. I hope they give us a successor to the 990.

@@HamRadioDX Right. Now we’re up to 10k USD and limited to 10w. Many people want the 2m/70cm to simply get on a repeater, and their main activity is HF. So that’s why people are griping. I love ICOM and think this new rig is outstanding, but I understand the griping. I’m just pointing out that there is a market for this, and if ICOM doesn’t provide it to protect other products, someone else will. I use a 705 with many triplexers and three amplifiers (hard rock 50+ and UHF/VHF amplifiers). I remotely control via sdr-control. If this new QRP all-band yaesu can be similarly controlled remotely, I can easily swap out the 705 with existing hardware to gain dual receive. While not an inexpensive setup, it offers less expensive upgrade paths but obviously fewer features. It’s kind of a modern 7100 replacement, which people are looking for.

My problem with a lot of modern transceivers that are dependent on PCs is that they use Windows not Linux. Considering that a lot of Amateurs use Linux and that Linux is often the preferred choice for techies (which a lot of Amateurs are) the major manufacturers should cater for Linux users.

With over 100,00 7300's already sold and no doubt tens of thousands of 9700's already sold, I don't think Icom would be too worried about losing any sales of either model to a new radio that combined both. The 7300 and 9700 will be eventually replaced. hence the need for a new radio to replace them. The 7760 is not the answer. It's just another HF+50 radio with an extra 100W that is ridiculously overpriced. I can't see 100,000 7760's ever being sold.

Every decent direct sampling SDR has a calibrated S-meter/Dbm display that can be used for useful things. I dont why Icom and Yaesu want to break this inherent advantage of direct sampling architecture by making something is " just a eye candy meter and waterfall display" The flexradio does it right, Anan does it right, elecraft does it right, Perseus does it ride and even the Chinese Malahit Dbm scale reads correctly. @@chuckdebian2205 well, maybe you use your device as a measuring tool to see how strong a signal is.
Now, I would use equipment that is designed to do so.
An S-meter is a relative thing. If you are "S7" and I am "S5" and we know the steps, we can deduce how much stronger your signal is.
Now. I have had a vertical tested in the garden. While it showed S9 for a signal and the other antenna was S5, I could not at all understand what was being said because of the noise it picked up. Yes, S8 noise and a tiny bot over the S* was the intended received signal. No copy there.
The same on the other antenna: S1 noise, S5 signal. Yes I could talk to the guy.
Now, it appears to me that a two way communication device is made for that.
If you don't like the S-meter, put your cheap rtl stick on the RX output and measure the "exact" signal strength there. Be aware of the issues, resolution, dynamic range of your lineair device.
You are welcome to use your stuff for your own purposes though, if you think the meter is useless, deal with it and get something else, or make something else.
In teh comms world, the SNR is the thing you need. I don't even care what the meter says, except for relative comparisions on the same antenna. That's all there is, for me.

Nope. I see why you put the price at the end of the video, I would have clicked off at the MSRP announcement. I don’t care if it cooks my dinner and folds my laundry. I’m not paying $6,100 for a radio that won’t even do all bands and modes.
