Martinique is a rugged Caribbean island that’s part of the Lesser Antilles. An overseas region of France, its culture reflects a distinctive blend of French and West Indian influences. Martinique is the 3rd largest island in The Lesser Antilles.
Its eastern coastline borders the Atlantic Ocean while its western coast is flanked by the Caribbean Sea. The island is 4 350 miles away from France, 1 950 miles from New York and 275 miles from the closest South American coastline.
It is difficult to narrow down the best beaches in Martinique because there are just so many of them to choose from. The islands offer contrasting shores, vast tourist beaches and small coves. Martinique is truly a land of tradition and culture, with a rich history of crafts and literature by renowned authors and famous poets, music and dance, lifestyle and gastronomy. Its multi-
ethnic population stems from the cultural mixing of the island’s successive inhabitants: Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, Indians, Levantines and Asians.
Christopher Columbus discovered the island on June 15, 1502 and Martinique became French under Louis XIII, a colony attached to the French crown marked by an economic and social system based on slavery and framed by the publication of the black code in 1685.
From the 18th century Martinique society was marked by revolutionary influences and emancipation struggles leading to the abolition of slavery on May 22, 1848. At the beginning of the twentieth century appear assimilationist claims leading to the erection in 1946 of Martinique in French department. By the law of 31 December 1982, Martinique also became a mono-departmental Region and took the name of «Département et région d'outre mer» following the constitutional reform of March 2003.
The closest neighboring islands are to the north: Dominica, 16 miles away, Guadeloupe, 75 miles away, and to the south: Saint Lucia, 23 miles away. Martinique is equidistant from the coasts of Venezuela and Haiti/Dominican Republic (497 miles).
