- The fallout between Xbox and Square Enix has been a sight to behold. Many Xbox fans gave up on the idea of getting the likes of Final Fantasy, Octopath Traveler, and plenty other quality JRPGs on their platform until today. In a surprise 180, Square Enix and Xbox have renewed their vows on stage together. What will we get out of this? Is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth coming to Xbox? There's so much to unpack, so let's not delay any further and dig in.

FF7 remake I’ve never played it.

guess Xbox swallowed the pill, allowing ff14 to come to xbox, without being (forced) tied to Gamepass.., as Xbox didn't want to lose SE to Sony completely (these pushes from MS for ff14, must have been the reason, why Sony couldn't buy SE recently..)
As someone who has been playing FF14 since the launch on PS4 9 years ago, I am happy that more people can play. This game is amazing and you guys need to try the free trial that gives over 200 hrs of free content. The Trial is actually insane how much great content they give you. You can even play some really high tier content in the trial now, including some Ultimates that are at lvl 70. Give it a try. It costs nothing.

Sounds groovy but MMORPGs are for only a very specific type of person/gamer. That is, you need to have a LOT of time to play games.

Xbox has been making some really big moves lately and I appreciate it. With Games with Gold ending and GamePass being a hit or miss recently it’s nice to know they’re trying to improve their platform for Xbox players
Final Fantasy 7 was already known that it would come to the xbox only later , so these steps were already known .

A number of the games you mention skipping Xbox, didn't actually skip Xbox. I own Diofield on Xbox.
FFXIV takes a significant investment of time before it really clicks with you. My moment was in the middle of the first expansion storyline, there is a fireside chat scene where the characters get to breathe and grow, and that was the moment I started to fall in love with it.
You are in for an incredible journey... I consider the whole story in FFXIV as the best RPG i ever played

You'll enjoy it eventually matt. For me personally I tried ff14 before two times and fell off both times because I had no idea what I could do or was supposed to be aiming for in this game. My third time I picked up as that's when of my friends who played it acted as my tour guide and got me to unlock the basic stuff such as glamour, pvp, the barber, how dungeons work and etc. With me now knowing what the possibility in this game was I could eventually focus on the story with ease and it took my breath away. Maybe you need to get a friend to show you stuff like to so that you can get the ball rolling with it matty! But sure don't give up on it. It takes a bit of work and you've played plenty of jrpgs before that took a bit of work to get into so I know you can do it.
Xbox didnt do the impossible, they just fixed their policies. Square Enix has wanted to put ffxiv on xbox for years, they couldn’t because xbox didn’t allow cross platform linkshells and communities, yoshi-p has said so before years ago. I’ll see you all in Eorzea soon
Playing FFXIV all the way through Endwalker over the course of 9 months wad hands down the single greatest gaming experience I have EVER experienced in my 35+ years of gaming. I love this game like a man loves a woman. Glad to see even more people get to experience this now.
This is so much bigger for FF14 right now than it is for Xbox. Glad that the playerbase keeps growing and more people get to try it. It blows up every new expansion, and since there is a whole new platform joining right before a new expansion, there's going to be another boost in players. FF14 just keeps getting Ws.

To be honest, without exclusivity then both brands could fall slowly overtime due to no point and people would just choose to stick to one console and without people switching(that small demographic that sells one console and buys the other over and over, btw I’m one of them), then sales would be hurt majorly.

Consoles _need_ to be more like PCs. It’s all about personal preference but they will still run ALL the games.
Seeing FFXIV going to Xbox in the middle of Fanfest was huge. Unlike many other MMOs this one feels more like Final Fantasy that is also MMO, but it will take much longer to appreciate, since early game is all about world building, while many FF games were presenting story and characters first.
Trust me - over time story will shift its focus on the party (especially during Shadowbringers and Endwalker) and one of its villains managed to get to 6th place in Japanese charts, standing along with Sephiroth or Cloud or other FF characters who had DECADES of fame before. To get even to top 10 for new FF characters is very-very hard.
Also, maybe, really maybe we will see FFXVI on Xbox and PC? I surely hope so.
huh, I thought it was Microsoft who didn't want FF14 on xbox. Back on 2013 Yoshi-p confirmed that the reason is due to the Xbox live's restrictive online policies that prevent crossplay. As an xbox owner, I won't get my hopes up for future square enix games on this platform.

I also believe Microsoft were just being arrogant because of the Xbox 360 success. Just like what sony did with the ps4 success

This game is part of the reason I even got my PS5. I may have waited if I knew it was coming to Xbox lol
If thats the only reason you got a ps5, you should return it, its clear you dont know many good games to play. Just a controller difference on ff14 since its cross play.

Hopefully this means that FF7 Remake/Rebirth and FF16 will actually be timed exclusives and will legitimately come to Xbox in around the same time they release on PC. Great news tbh. This likely means that Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12 will be coming to Xbox as well.
I doubt FF16 will come to Xbox since Sony Co-funded and co-developed it. FF7 remake potentially could come to Xbox but not day 1 for the sequels bc of the Sony deal
@@iortizjunior FF7 Rebirth is obviously not coming day-one because it's already announced as a PS5 exclusive, but I imagine it might come to Xbox the same day it comes to PC as well.
Also, to counter your point about FF16, The Callisto Protocol was another game that Sony helped with the development of, even though it wasn't an exclusive game. Same goes for a AA Chinese game called FIST: Forged in Shadow Torch, which was a timed PlayStation exclusive that Sony funded via their China Heroes Program. But it came to Xbox last month. So that point is kinda moot.
Let's keep in mind that these games then have to work on X-Box Series S in order for them to come to X-Box Series X. That is definitely a factor for some devs.

You should watch Jocatt’s video called 300 hours to get into FFXIV.
It goes very in depth on his struggles to get into the game despite wanting to enjoy it. It didn’t take him 300 hours before he started thinking it was good but rather he says he spent 300 hours playing it “wrong”. That is, he was treating it like a lemon lime popsicle and not strawberry ice cream.
It sounds like your struggles are similar to his in getting into the game.
Just know that the game is, by and large, a story that is all about set-up and pay off, that everything that happens in the main story comes back around later. So you need to pay attention and not skip any cutscenes.

@@jgg6932 It DOESN'T take 300 hours to get into the game. It took Jocat that long because he was trying to play it as something that it wasn't. He was trying to basically put a square peg into a round hole.
He's fully invested in the game now and has made multiple guides for it and loves it for what it is.
You should watch the video by Jocat when you have the time. He goes really in depth, his criticisms of the game are more than fair and he addresses each and every one of them after the half way point when he explains how he finally got over his initial issues with the game that kept him from enjoying it.

As someone who also bounced off 14 a few times, it definitely overall gets better once you beat the original mainline quest and start getting to the expansions.

This is all just a PR move. MS has made these claims before with SE years ago. Some of Square Enix games are already on Xbox. In fact Octopath Traveler is on Xbox and not PlayStation.
Don’t expect the big AAA games. The president said “whevever possible” for a reason. Sony has exclusive contracts with majority of the big games.

FFXIV has an amazing story, but it can be a bit of a slog to get through the beginning. If you'd like some advice for getting through it, then I would recommend to try streaming your playthrough. It really helps to have people to talk with while you are going through those early parts of the story. It makes the whole experience far more enjoyable, even if you aren't playing with anyone else in game.
Octopath traveler is an amazing game. Really fun and unique combat, lots of secrets and tough bosses
I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV for about 2 years now, and I know the base game isn't your vibe atm, I know it's slow at the beginning, but towards the end of the base game I think it really picks up from there, and I know it's not easy to hear someone say "Just keep playing it, it gets better after x amount of hours" I'm also a casual fan of asmongold so I get that argument, but I still do encourage you to stick with it when you have more patience, the payoff is great and I've made so many friends within the game's amazing community along the way
About damn time. As someone who has played this game on PlayStation since PS3, it’s nice that Xbox can finally join in and see what they were missing out on. Sucks that it took Microsoft like 10 years to break and change their stance, but all that matters is they did and now both parties can play. Hopefully FF7 remake and FF16 come soon too. It’s awesome seeing Xbox finally getting some worthwhile games. So hyped to play this with some other friends!

@@laurieannrogan1317 that’s not entirely true. Yes, Microsoft didn’t care about FF14 and they are the sole reason that game wasn’t on Xbox. I disagree that Phil Spencer is obsessed with Sony. He probably clued in that some of his previous decisions (like the policy that was keeping FF14 off Xbox) were horrible and anti consumer so he switched his tone. He’s finally doing some decent things, but does that negate the dumb moves he has made in the past? Absolutely not. He did this for Xbox, not because of PlayStation

The best thing about this is how conveniently everyone will forget the promise at a Square showcase to have a closer relationship with Xbox and bring games to "Xbox whenever possible" when Sony buys Square according to rumors 😂.
Also damm Phil Spencer is putting in the work. Over the course of this summer his done the showcase, been on the stand, and showed up as a surprise guest at a Square Enix show to blow up the internet and annouce what many had despaired impossible. No one can deny he's dedicated to Xbox and growing the platform and ecosystem.
I'm actually genuinely happy to see Square got a no life gamer for a CEO. If its true he sounds like Phil Spencer in that regard where he pushes for smart decisions gamers want and not out of touch executive choices.

I hope so too. NIS and Falcom are notorious for never releasing their games on Xbox, like ever. Same with the Atelier games from Koei Tecmo. Once Xbox gets games from those three devs in addition to Square Enix, the issues regarding Japanese game support on Xbox will be no more.

I have noticed that NIS have released some games on Xbox and Rune factory 4 is on gamepass.
@@jimmythegamer2231Falcom released Ys Origin on Xbox so it’s not like they haven’t before. It would probably be pretty beneficial for them if they did port to Xbox. As a small company like Falcom needs all the sales it can get.

THIS I knew somebody was gonna try to spin this a SE not being interested. Yoshi P said years ago they are cool but the Xbox only servers the MS wanted to do was a no go.
This was a big surprise. I had an MMO addiction so I’m scared to play it. I wish they’d have a single player version where you can do all the story without paying a subscription. ESO has better subscription model where it’s only for more storage and stuff. Dragon Quest X has an offline version so FF11&14 should get one someday.
I learned of my MMO addiction with Runescape. I managed to break free after a major upheaval in game. I was able to play ESO at a healthy amount so I will probably give 14 a try.
It's great to see them get SE games on Xbox finally, but I think a major reason why SE and probably many other devs have neglected to also publish on Xbox, is cause of the extremely silly condition of having to have games published to both Series S and Series X. Which means games that are trying to push the limit of the the strongest consoles, will now have to tune back their game to work on the Series S as well or have a completely separate lite version for the Series S, while having the more beefy version for the Series X which I can imagine is a big hassle.
@@garrusvakarian8709 sure, but say for someone like FF7 Rebirth that we know will be PS5 only, do we think that the Series S is able to keep up while not cutting corners to try and make ends meet?
That's the issue I'm making in that, this silly Xbox condition hampers some devs from pushing the absolute limit of current gen top end, because they end up having to make concessions to allow it to work on a non-top end system.
Was really a fan of JRPG but as of last I’m more welcoming to trying them out. Hopeful that FF7 Remake, Live a Live & Octopath Traveler 2 finally make their way to Xbox.
I can see ff7 eventually down the line but 16 was codeveloped by sony plus SE always wanted 14 online but certain microsoft traditions made them drag it on this long

When i watched it happen live today I knew for sure you would have something to say about it! I checked twitter but didn't seem to have any updates so I'm glad you posted this video!
For 14 you really wanna be playing it with someone that knows the game up and down who can tell you what to focus on to reach your target without making it so much of a chore. There's dailies which gives you a lot of experience and crafting/gathering classes who can make the best gear if you level it together with your battle classes. Mostly just gotta grab a class you like, do main scenario but also take time to explore and learn about how to navigate through the game. Great content btw, keep it coming 🤙🏻
The game is easy as hell for regular content. Why do you need a friend to be a guild?
It's a very solo-friendly mmorpg.

I had a similar experience to you, where I tried FF14 a few times and just kept bouncing off. It wasn't until I actually watched a patch trailer for the game that my interest got piqued. I thought, "Wow this kinda looks crazy and looks way more interesting than what I played before!" After that, I was able to power through A Realm Reborn and then eventually got hooked. So if your like me, and even though it might seem counter-intuitive to do so, I would watch some FF14 Trailers (The non-cgi ones) and see if they grab your attention! Despite bouncing off the game 2-3 times, It's now one of my favorites of all time!
30 hours ? So just past the login screen then 🤣 XBOX wanted to block players talking and playing with PS players, Square said NO WAY. Guessing microsoft bit their lip and gave in.
Living in Japan I have noticed that foreign companies are not welcome here. Xbox is hard to find and most stores only have ps and nintendo sections. Ford gave up trying to set up in Japan. The liquor Southern comfort dissappeared. Monster energy was banned and reintroduced without taurine, eveb though Japanese products can have x3 the taurine as Monster.
There's alot of legal hoops and bullying to ensure Japanese companies don't lose business.
SE issue with 14 being on xbox has always been that they didn't want the players to pay for online and a subscription.
And Microsoft wanted dedicated servers separate from PlayStation at the time.
@ChilleUK I think they wanted the same deal they had for 11. But 14 1.0 went through he'll. They probably should've worked something out after ARR came out. But better late than never. I'm definitely gonna play it on xbox so the metrics turn out good. Hopefully, they let me pull up my account I already have on PC/P5

FF14 is HUGE..., its the biggest SE game of the past decades.., its WOW-like size & prestige
... huge win for Xbox (L for Sony..); but as long as games are on both, its great!
The thing about ff14 is that the base game is kinda mid but the dlcs are 10/10 and where the game really shines

They would say that if they were planing on keeping the relationship the exact same as it had been considering some square games come to Xbox, just not the ones people most want.

No, here it was Xbox that wanted to screw over their players by making them pay for both the subscription for FFXIV and the Xbox live to be able to play the game.
That's why it's only now that the game is on Xbox.

Se wanted 14 on Xbox, Microsoft wouldn’t allow it because they put too many restrictions and conditions on it.

Yeah they are one of the biggest MMOs now but they basically threw away hundreds of millions due to its original release and redevelopment. Even after all that the game wasn't really huge until Shadowbringers and still really struggles with with retention of new players due to having a campaign that will take 80-100 hours to even get caught up to current content (and thats just the main story) which is required.
THe way Yoshida has talked about it is they don't have a huge budget and he's said a few times he wishes they had the budget WoW does.

So many years ago Microsoft asked if ff14 wants to come over to xbox. Yoshi-p didn't want players to pay for Xbox live and an ff14 sub. Yrs later when Phil took over, Yoshi p said Phil removed all the barriers. At thst time endwalker was almost out, 16 was being made snd finally its happening

I think those are the kids the actual ones like me who are old wanted ff14 on xbox but back then xbox wanted all money to them (own servers) and square didn’t want to have ppl pay for two subscriptions to play online
FFXIV is great, not just for the game but also it's community... but I recommend you pace yourself. That's a heck of a lot of content to push through. It's worth it, I've been a subscriber since the 1.0 days but I've fallen to filthy casual status and I admit I'm not caught up. I almost always wait until about now and try to catch up before new expansions. So... yeah start now and don't wait until just before the expansion. There's hundreds of hours of story here so try and not try and do it all at once if you can.
The hardest thing when playing and enjoying 14 is removing modern single player ff expectations and the mmo endgame grind mindset since 14 exists in this weird hybrid in between like a mix of old school ff and vanilla wow.
ARR is easier to go through if you make the effort to read and just roleplay as your character in this world.
Kinda like dragon age inquisition huh? Even though that game was single player you could tell it was inspired by mmos.

There’s a Japan connection there for sure. There were only a handful of games not coming to XBOX but it still seems like SE let Sony pick and choose what they want.

guess Xbox swallowed the pill, allowing ff14 to come to xbox, without being (forced) tied to Gamepass.., as Xbox didn't want to lose SE to Sony completely (these pushes from MS for ff14, must have been the reason, why Sony couldn't buy SE recently..)
They also wanted separate servers for the Xbox ecosystem originally as well.

Without saying too much, final fantasy was never a genre i played much and 14 was my first. See it was one big story all the way up to endwalker, with all the expansions for 14. So the Realm Reborn part being long and tedious is a known fact, but it is setting up a lot of majorly important story beats and strings that gets pulled from in all of the future expansions up until endwalker. Truly amazing storytelling, even if it is very long.
"Whenever possible" probably means there's still a year long embargo on FF16 being a Sony exclusive.

Never really played any FF games outside 1&2 on the Gameboy Advance lol, but my brother was really into FF14. Cool that its finally coming to Xbox, better late than never. Might give it a try, even if MMOs aren't really my thing outside of like, Destiny 2.
I'm sure people have mentioned this to you before but yeah a realm reborn is very very tedious but once you get to the last a realm reborn content patches and get closer to Heavensward the story picks up the stormblood gives you this big picture thing the. Shadowbringers and endwalker keep the train going

Happy for the Xbox players. Been playing FFXIV since 1.0 network alpha test until now and will continue on PC. This deal is worth it for Sony as well since they own a part of Square Enix stocks so if Square gets more money Sony does too so I don't know why they didn't to this earlier. Before the problem was that they wanted to rerun some events and they wanted to add it to GamePass and Square didn't want that so Phill and Square got the deal that you don't need Gold, won't be on GamePass, and sub will be the same and they finally got the deal

Like my friends told me you either quit half way through A Relm Reborn or beat Heavensward and become a walking advertisement for the game. Played it on a whim october 2021 now I’m over 2100 hrs.
It's one of the moments the creator wants to state that exclusivity ( especially in games) doesn't help.
For me between Xbox and playstation platforms the exclusive games should have a one year period so for the development team to earn more in the first two years period. This will help with better dlcs that are not rushed just to increase the income from each base version game.
Nintendo due to the portable gaming console 's history ( Gameboy till switch) should have first party exclusive games so she can promote her device. ( The controversy here is that she already should had released the more powerful console so she shows that the love she had received till now will return to the fans. ).
I don’t mind if Square Enix puts their big games on Xbox. I mean it was nice that FF7 and FF16 among other games were (temporarily) PlayStation exclusive since Xbox now has most of the big western rpgs exclusive. I just hope Xbox doesn’t try and over correct the issue by trying to buy out these franchises or the whole publisher.
I’ve been worried for awhile that Microsoft was going to buy out Sega despite games like Persona and Yakuza being primarily PlayStation games. I still think Microsoft is trying to do that but hopefully Sega/Atlus knows their biggest fan base for those games is on PlayStation so that’s preventing them from being bought out. I just don’t want them to try the same thing with Square Enix.
As someone who plays on both consoles and PC, I agree. There’s a huge difference in making your own IPs and games nobody has heard of before and making them exclusive. Nobody has ever heard of Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, etc. so making those exclusive is fine. Same way nobly had an issue with Microsoft making Halo, and Gears of War exclusive. But taking whole exciting franchises away just to say you have more exclusives is so anti-consumer and frankly a pretty pathetic display that shows you can’t make your own games. I’m not really a fan of any side as I have/play on all systems. I just hate literally taking games off of other platforms.

No, it was not planned to come to Xbox. FF14 initially released on PS3 a decade ago before being relaunched on PS4/PC as A Realm Reborn, and Squeenix hadn't planned to put it on Xbox initially until now.

XIV is a funny one. I'm an MMO geek and an FF fan.. and I bounced off XIV three times.
However...
Almost three years ago, I decided to just get through ARR (the first portion) so I could see what the fuss was about. Did it in about 50 or so hours, entered Heavensward... and I've been hooked ever since.
I honestly think ARR needs a bit of a rework as the new player experience is a little slow and a bit, well... boring. That said, the way the team weaves in some rando quest NPC you met at level 20 a couple of expacs later...and how often they do this... does make ARR pretty damned important.

This is a good PR move, but the only reason I'd call it "impossible" would be if this new arrangement actually made a difference for Xbox in the market. Time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's not likely to. Xbox is spending heavily but I think once thet stop the heavy spend it will go back to what it was.
Seeing how the previous CEO lost his job. The new CEO won't make the same mistake of taking exclusive deals with Sony. Make everything day one one all platforms including PC. Capcom has shown how successful it is to build up a fanbase on all platforms with your IP's something that SE has not done. I could see FF7R coming to Xbox assuming the exclusive deal is no longer up. Part 2 might be exclusive for a period of time because the previous CEO likely signed a deal with Sony. Hopefully other SE products like Star Ocean games, FF Pixels, and Octopath 2 come to Xbox for the time being.
