Description:
Since ExM1-ExM7 legacy timing is more or less abandoned I'll probably get around to doing some ultimate doom speedruns again.
5 seconds faster than the previous record by Vile, uses the intercept overflow on E1M8.
Sub 5 minutes would be a nice goal here, this run was overall worse than vile's, but obviously saved lots of time from the intercept overflow and not having to pick up rockets on e1m6 (roughly 14 seconds total).
Map comments:
E1M1: I'll take 12 seconds here for now, not too difficult to get 11 but it's a bit annoying to reset for it. Of course skipping mega armor would be ideal to save about 2 seconds, but then you lose many more runs on e1m3.
E1M2: 24 seconds is ok here, though 22 is easy if you get the zombieguy to open up the door on the way back from red key and if there are no issues in the exit room.
E1M3: Seemed like it went ok at the start, but 43 seconds is not good, got blocked too much in the end. Unlucky to have the last barrel hit me like that.
E1M4: Always get either 15 or 16 seconds here, bumped the wall and lost out on 15 here.
E1M5: Another level that went ok, nothing amazing and nothing terrible, lots of smaller mistakes though with opening the doors, heh.
E1M6: No idea how I got stuck that long on the lightpost, it was like it grabbed me.
E1M7: Not a bad time, but could have been a couple of seconds faster.
E1M8: A new setup for the intercept overflow that's easier for an episode run, 22-23 seconds is about average what I get in practice here, so the time wasn't awful, but it's possible to get 17 seconds or so. Unfortuantely getting a good time is completely luck based, but getting the trick itself requires no luck.
Overall a very average run and easily improveable. Under 5 minutes will happen one day.
I've got a few more iwad runs that are easily improved with some route changes, hopefully I'll get more of them done in the coming weeks. - Ігри

@@JohnSmith-cz3us this is a hobby, you love the game, love every aspect in it, including engine, bugs, details and more. And you love making impossible to it. Speedruns always was about it. Speedrunners just love this. And someone who hate this will never be able to be a good or persistent speedrunner. However, speedrunning community is tighten with a cause, and by cause I mean charity events they're present in.

I don't understand how the overflow was triggered. I though that you needed way more objects in I straight line for this.
@@jonathanford9354 There's a very rare and precise rounding error in the hitscan blockmap traversal code that can cause it to iterate over the same block repeatedly, adding the same intercepts to the array over and over again. The id guys must have been aware of this because they hard-coded the function to only iterate 64 (iirc) times. This is why Zero Master has to keep shooting until enough pinkies happen to enter a particular block. See decino's video on the all-ghosts effect for a more in-depth and intuitive explanation

It feels kind of satisfying to see that even in this run you can still see many minor imperfections that can be improved to save some seconds. It means that the Doom is really a challenging game for speedrunning.

Yeah, I've read from the description that the run could be faster, since it wasn't as polished(though still great) as Vile's.

I was waiting for you to use your last rocket in the run to instantly trigger the exit in E1M8, I think that would've saved 2 seconds.
can't deal self-damage once the intercept overflow happens, only on the previous level would I be able to do that which would be a massive risk but possible depending on the situation.

It's good to hear that the EXM1-EXM7 convention is being finally abandoned. How did that come about? Are there going to be separate categories for the two criteria?
The convention came about due to the fact that the vanilla engine doesn't show a level end screen for the final map of an episode, it just skips to the epilogue text, so before source ports were released that do show that level end screen, it was impossible to determine the in-game time of map 8, so the community made do by just going off the maps that did show in-game time. Then, when source ports came along and changed all that, the community just started labeling runs with two times, a time for maps 1 through 7 and a time for the full episode, in order to allow new runs to compete on the same leaderboards as old runs. Personally, I think a better move (as you seem to suggest in your comment) would've been to start a new category for full episodes but leave the legacy category standing so people can compete on those terms instead, but I wasn't there personally so maybe there were reasons why the community did things the way they did.

So, I haven't watched any videos on speed running in a while, or any runs. What happened at the end? Is that new? Have I finally snapped?
When I watch Doom speedruns, I like to pretend that Doomguy is late for his kid's school play.
How many tries does it take to get this time? It seems if it just takes 5 minutes you could retry until you get lucky more often. Unless this video is 1 in 100 already. Very cool.

no, while the 30 second par time is correct, the intermission screen isn't displayed in dos so it wasn't intended to be shown, so I assume they never adjusted it.
is this Doom original 1, i remember this playing had a Floppy disk but was DOOM not ultimate =)

@@davidchez513 how does he get the necessary amount of intercepts with just a few pinkies and barrels?
@@entengummitiger1576 It works in two cases. Using intercepts (bunch of corpses in one spot), and also having a position where a bullet tracer gets stuck in one of the block maps. The positioning for that to happen needs to be really precise. Again, it's also explained in decino's video and it includes a moment recorded where just shooting a single shotgunner in Doom 2 Nirvana map, triggered the bug.
I know some stuff about modern doom speedrunning, but completely zero when it comes to classic doom speedrunning.

Was e1m8's par time always 30 seconds? There's no way.
The world has finally caught up to 1993's John Romero (the par times are apparently supposed to be his best rounded up to the nearest 30s, iirc, though I don't know if there's any reason given for these 30s times)
The original DOS version didn't show the tally screen at the end of Doom's episodes, so they didn't bother putting in a realistic par time for them.

I think so too, but it's probably down to rng. If zero is lucky enough with enemies moving around that he doesn't have to bump them so much it can be done. That spectre in the video alone slowed him down by seconds.

Ummmmm zero this is definitely obtainable by your standards but seems to be a bit off the norm for you, i did notice your absolute savage use of the shotgun alerting enemies and beginning their pathfinding, and excellent luck and execution, but what I couldn’t figure out is my frame rate not matching up with whats on screen? Have a brand new phone, shouldn’t be an issue. Its not in any other runs i watch, its really weird. Prolly just a phone issue, but i love the run man. Pretty effin clutch if you ask me. Helluva way to continue the new year after your last drop!!
