How to Identify 9 Obscure Wild Plants - Video Field Guide

- When foraging there are a lot of obscure wild plants that you may find and wonder how to identify them. This video will take you through 9 plants you may find while foraging and how to identify them. Some of them are edible, some are medicinal, and one is poisonous. it's important to know what plants are around you so you don't waste time in hoping it may be useful or waste time trying to find out what it is, and oftentimes, books that serve wild edible identification only focus on edible ones with a few look a like species. These plants are obscure and rarely talked about though several of them do get mentioned in common guides, the pages on them are rather short, usually consisting of maybe four sentences. We will not talk about their uses but I will delineate which of these plants are edible or medicinal, and I will delineate the one that is poisonous.

Thanks. Yes, the sedges aren`t a member of the grass group. They are related to the rush group of water plants ( maybe cattails), as in fact they will grow anywhere there is poor acidic soil that is prone to flooding. The cemetaries I manage here in PA are now being taken over by nutsedge because of the very wet conditions here in the last 4-5 years.

As always great info!!! I think I just pulled out young day flower plants at my daughter's, I knew they were somehow familiar, but not flowers yet or I would have known. Chufa grass, I had a lot, but I never found tubers on them. I'm sure there are more growing hidden, need to look closer at them!
I get black aphids on my lambsquarter, I let it grow once I see ladybugs and larvas, I find it keeps aphids away from my gardenplants.
Also need to check what I think is white snakeroot. Always wanted to know what plant that is: smart weed 🤓

Hi Josh, thank you for another great video! I got a bit confused with the clearweed and the bugs on it. In a gardening video, the guy says to plant nettles cause they attrack the bugs from the other plants to them. I figured the bugs come to your garden anyways, and will consume your crops, but if there are nettles, or like the clearweed I learned from you now, the bugs will go there instead, so your crops will be safer. Now it kind of is like what was there first, the chicken or the egg... will it draw in more bugs, or will it help keeping your other plants safe? 🤔 Big hugs for you, you are awesome! Hello from Louisiana👋👋 New sub here! I moved to a home that has not had lawn care for a while, i have a plethora of wild plants. I have taken pictures of them, but Google can't directly identify them because they have so many variations. I have lots of dandelion, which I would love to forage and eat in salads or make tea from the roots. Do you have any videos on how to do this? Also, do you have a video(s) on how to clean up your lawn and which weeds and wild plants i can remove and keep?

Finally.. i have been searching for a video on clear weed. Since it is in the stinging nettle family, does that mean, they have the same medicinal values and properties of stinging nettle? I know this plant was used by native americans.
It would be nice once you explain the plant if it is edible...
I have tons of dandelions growing around my yard but i notice they have fine prickly fuz on them are they safe to eat like that?
Is the asiatic dayflower related to the wandering jew plant? it has similar flowers and leaves/stems.
They are related. The dayflower is in the genus Commelina and the wandering Jew plant is in the genus Tradescantia.
Is chicory forage (cichorium intybus ) vover crop seed edible? Is the pkant edible? I will be buying some from Strictly medicinal seeds company.

Yes they certainly can, I just don't see it like that a lot. I'm not sure if you guys have blue lettuce there or not but you certainly have wild lettuce and prickly lettuce there but it would probably be around lawns and fields more so than in the woods.

Just a suggestion. Provide the season to forage and edible portions. These can be valuable bits of information not typically available.
I sometimes do and other times don't. Main reason is a lot of the plants I've covered, not just in this video but in others as well, I plan on doing preparation videos on them which will cover that type of information. Thank you for the feedback, it is always appreciated!

A much different plant, dragon fruit, has a succulent, triangular shaped, with serration and thorns.
Rushes are round, sedges have edges. Catails, well...
Smart weed flowers are closed off its weird...it wasn't an insect inside it was a seed...they are small black and smooth like flax or sesame
Also the bends in the stem is a survival tactic of this plant
When you pull it out these bends break apart very easily
When it lands elsewhere it will grow roots or the flowers seeds will dry and fall out easily
I have this plant in my yard i believe its in bird seed
It would be more compeling and useful if you did tell us about the uses -- at least enough to give me a reason to remember the plant. If I knew why a plant was worth remembering I would be putting in more effort to remember it; and paying more attention to your videos. Please give us a basic "medicinal for...." or "edible root/leaves" etc. Give me a reason to care.
