  • Walking the Somerton-Upfield Railway Link
In Todays video, we walk the abandoned Somerton-Upfield Railway link, which connects upfield station to Roxburgh Park on the cragieburn line, the disused section of line has plenty of sidings and lots of history including dual standard gauge track!

The Ford siding extended almost to Barry Rd, parallel to upfield station. Ford engines and parts were transported from Geelong to campellelfield in louvre vans. Not just finished product shipped out

Victorian Railways BFW vans. Big vans 23 mtrs long, and built right up to maximum size allowed by the VR loading gauge.

We sent a lot of jumbo steel coil from Port Kembla Steelworks to Somerton back in the day.
This stopped in the mid to late 2000's

I believe one of the sidings was Martin and Albright Steel siding which was Standard Gauge for shipment of Steel from interstate.

Grew up on Barry rd about 50m from the station. I recall the sirens and lights as they loaded the trains at the ford at night. This was in the 70s, into the early 80's maybe - I don't really recall it later than that but maybe I slept heavier :-). Yabbies used to be caught out of that creek.

Wouldn't it make sense to fix up this line and use it for the new Somerton freight terminal instead of all trains going through the Broadmeadows line?

You know what? I actually enjoyed this video! I went to Upfield back in June aboard the Steamrail Member's Tait tour, and didn't think of anything beyond Upfield. Then on a subsequent flight back to Melbourne (From Adelaide, where I live) we were flying overhead this bit and I noted the link to Somerton. Your video fills in the gap for me on what exists down there, so thanks :)

In the early 70's when based at Wodonga Locomotive Depot we used to run a down standard gauge train from Ford factory to Albury where a NSW crew would take it further. Usually the VR used a T class loco to haul the train.

It is government policy to reduce the rail network in Victoria as the cost of maintaining it is too prohibitive
