    I've never done this but I read on Randy Oliver's site that if you put down some Lye at the base of the hive, the skunks will get it on their paws and then they don't like the flavor. However the mechanism works, he said it works. I need to try this. I've had problems with skunks too. Before I knew I had skunk problems (once upon a time), I had a shotgun in my hands while blowing away some aluminum cans---and along came a skunk. I didn't shoot it, but I didn't know the damn thing was probably eating my bees.
    Hindsight is 20/20. That won't happen again.

      Thanks for sharing the tip. I see how that would work. I live on a small farm and it just so happens that my compost pile is not far from my bee yard in this video. Skunks are always visiting the compost looking for eggs. I think that's how they found my hives last year but now that the hives are higher there is no worries.

    Nice job Jason. That old oil field pipe is solid stuff and the price is right. 👍👍 I have a skunk problem too with one cinder block and 4x4 cross beams. They only bother them in the winter so I put up an electric fence. I can’t imagine my hives being higher with two deeps and sometimes two honey supers. Gets pretty tall. I have that same wonky little trailer. lol.

      I've never heard of tangle foot. Kinda sounded like a flower to plant but after searching for it on Google, I now know it's not a plant at all. lol Thanks for sharing the tip. I don't have many any issues not sure if it's due to having a bunch of chickens or what. I used to worry myself to death about ants but then I learned strong hives can manage them on their own. So now I just work to keep all the hive strong.

    Jason I used to use pallets for hive stands but they rot out in a couple years. This spring i had a bunch of used concrete blocks and stacked them 2 high to get away from skunks and had some older pressure treated 4x4 that I have used; it puts the bees 20 inches above the ground. I love your videos Jason. Rick in Pa.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  5 років тому

      I've used pallets too. Your right, they don't last long but they do make plastic pallets but that wouldn't help with skunks. You better off having the hives higher as they are safe from ground predators. Glad you enjoy the videos, I appreciate you watching.

      Cinnamon powder should get rid of them

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  5 років тому +1

      @Anthony Tedesco Yes. I have had them there many times over the years. I usually switch out the lids to make sure I removed all the ants and eggs then I would coat the ground around the hives with diatomaceous earth (DE). This usually keeps them from coming back. It also helps control and hive beetle larva living in the soil. I used to coat my hive stand feet with grease to keep ants away too, plus I have tried the cinnamon. Cinnamon does work but it's too costly to use long term.

  • @Digger927
    @Digger927 5 років тому

    I did the same thing years ago, I had access to a metric crap load of galvanized pipe so I built several hive stands out of it except I welded straps of scrap iron I had across it to keep it spaced and together. I eventually came to not trust it's ability to sit hives on it because of the rounded surfaces and wind. In ten + years I only ever had one hive slide off it and it was empty but from that point on I just laid 4x4's on them and have used the 4x4's ever since. They give a much better surface for the hives to grip but free is free and 4x4's aren't cheap so use what you have is what I always say.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  5 років тому

      I've never had a hive slide off my stands in 11 years of keeping bees but I did have one blow over just a month or so ago. I don't blame the stand for that, the beekeeper should of strapped them down. I have consider welding a cross support in to keep the bars spaced but once I get the materials ready I never do as it's so much faster to just do it the way I showed. lol
      So you welded galvanized pipe? That's a no, no due to the fumes but I really should practice what I preach. I've done it too. lol

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 5 років тому

      @@JCsBees Yeah I wasn't too concerned about the fumes, I built them in the shop over summer so I had the big doors open and the big shop fan behind me blowing the fumes out the door. The one hive I had slide off the pipe was an empty and a 40+ mph wind took it off. Didn't hurt anything but I had always been nervous about hives sliding off that pipe anyway, looking at them while working hives they just looked like they could slide easily, lol. I happened across some cheap 4x4's eventually and took the opportunity to change it over. Moving queen cells over to mating nucs tomorrow if weather permits and at this point it about has to be done one way or another. I have until Wednesday to get it done acording to my queen rearing calendar. Besides I'm leaving Wed evening for Judy's grazing school.

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 5 років тому

      @@JCsBees He does a lot of events all over the country and Canada so maybe you'll get a chance to catch him nearby and at a cheaper cost someday. This grazing school event is friggin expensive by itself then by the time I got a decent hotel and paid for two extra nights, it was a pricey adventure. Still pretty cheap for an enjoyable mini vacation I guess though...if I count it as one, lol. I didn't want to try to drive four hours going to the event the first morning so figured I'd get to Columbia the night before, same with coming home so I chose to stay a couple extra nights. At this point another $250 for a little comfort isn't a big deal I guess, lol. Would have been cool to have been able to meet you in person at the grazing school, I'd have treated you and your family to supper one of the evenings after the class.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  5 років тому +1

      Like I said last week, I know those classes are pricey but in the end your gain an education you can't get anywhere else. Everything I have learned about grazing is learned by experience which isn't a bad thing but I would have rather had the education before 40 head were dropped on my lap. That's just how it worked when I started too, he showed up dropped them off and left. No instructions, no pointers, nothing! It took lots of coffee and videos to get me on the right path. Of course, I am still learning and still make mistakes (like the banding issue we just had) but I learn from them and move forward. Anyway have fun, be safe and act like a sponge and suck up as much of Greg's knowledge as you can.
      I appreciate the offer on dinner bud, that means a lot. Thanks!

      well I'm trying to increase my hives and moving toward 2 & 4 way pallets to move some bees to my creek property as an isolation yard to be stocked with VSH queens to flood the area with VSH Italian drones, then cross them on some Bob Binnie Carniolan/Caucasian genetics, so I will probably have put the pallets inside some 3' hog panels and use electric fencing as well, then occasionally put out some rotting sour mash corn and go set on it at night with a AR-15 with night scope, DNR don't mind if you're killing wild hogs and coyotes at night where there's clear evidence of field and hay field destruction and the coyotes are chasing deer and turkeys, around here the hogs are even rooting up peach orchards, cotton and peanut fields, so I'm sure they'd go after bee hives, I may just collage 4- 4 way pallets on 4X4s on top of 4- 55 gallon drums, I've never had a problem with critters and such when I've moved singles there for reorentation away from. my house yard.
