I'm at 1:19:18 What an interesting conversation. The thing I love about your podcast Andy, is that you really get what this is all about. Just genuine conversation following it wherever it goes with some regard for the audience, but mostly following your own interest and being raw. Angel seemed to get that and was very open himself, which I appreciate.
This is the kind of conversation that people can value irrespective of their personal interest in the subject matter, but solely because of the interest we have in genuine human conversations.
Keep it up, and thanks to Angel.

I didn’t really talk to my father for almost 20 years. Occasional interactions that we did have were always very tense and - which was 90% my fault. I was just so angry and grew up knowing one side of the story, which I only recognize now. He was far from being a perfect dad but now I think he wasn’t nearly as bad as I labeled him in my teenage mind. I’m about your age and it was just in the past few years that I realized that him and my mom were simply not for each other. I think it’s something he was always trying to tell me. I have no idea how or why these two ever got together or maybe it wasn’t this way in the beginning. My mom is a wonderful woman, but that whole relationship was just a powder keg.
He died suddenly several years ago. We never had a chance to get close and have a good relationship. And here I am, living with bottomless regrets. I think I understand how your son may be feeling and where he is emotionally, but I hope that you guys manage to work things out. Because all this time you’re losing right now is so precious. I’m sure that he will come around and everything is going to be fine one day. As your listener aka “person who doesn’t really know you”, one thing that I believe I do know about you is how much you love your kids. Hang in there dad, sounds like you’re going through a rough patch.

He passed a year ago and all I did the last few times I spoke to him was argue and fight and blame. I missed a lot. He was loosing his mind at that time and I often wonder what it would have been like to comfort him instead of making him feel lost. Thanks y'all.

Hands down my favourite episode, thank you. Such a constant and high level of real. The respect and value given to “family” here has been absent like this for decades on mainstream media. This man, Angel Cortes, still fights everyday with purpose despite his many life “battle scars” his purpose honourable his courage and determination an inspiration. No doubt he will reap and live to see great reward right across his family but also through to family members in generations he will never live to meet. That’s the history of the making of America right there. This might not be the modern idea of the American dream but it’s the American real and what made America great. What ever Republicans and Democrats say in the next few months will “fix things” if it’s not this or support for this it’s not worth your vote. America is at the edge of something and the rest of us in the world are holding our breathe to see what way you go (and I don’t mean the election). This little episode touches something profound. I must get my shit together, because it can be done.

I was 16 when my parents split. my dad being the cause. and for about a year and a half it was fights, sometimes physical and mostly just not talking to him. but I knew it was me, I pushed him away. I got my head out of my ass finished my school. moved in with him for a while until my ship date. and now its a more mature less of a father child relationship. just always be open to him and trying to interact, your son will come around.

As one former gang member said, if these young gang members want to shoot somebody, join the service(if you can and you don't have a criminal record or the KIND of criminal record that would prevent you from being able to join)-the vast majority of the time, you'll be much better off for it-depending on what YOU make of it.

Love your podcast and I always look forward to your new episodes. Your sense of humor is awesome. Many people get stuck in life living in their “Glory Days” instead of evolving. Andy is doing it right.

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn form me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light". Angel and Andy, you will never be truly happy until you have a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus is the answer brothers - I hope this reaches you both.
