Soc Trang is known as the capital of pagodas and towers. In addition to being a space for cultural and religious activities of the Khmer people, the temples are also an indispensable destination for tourists from all over the world in their journey to discover the Southwest region. Each temple has a completely different style, giving visitors from one surprise to another. In which, it is impossible not to mention Botum Vong Sa Som Rong Pagoda.
Botum Vong Sa Som Rong Pagoda, also known by locals as Som Rong Pagoda, is located at 367 Ton Duc Thang, Ward 5, City. Soc Trang, Soc Trang province.
According to the monks, Som Rong Pagoda was built in 1785 and has undergone 12 generations of abbots. Originally made of temporary bamboo and leaves, after many restorations, it was spacious as it is today. About the name Som Rong, it is because in the past this area had a lot of wild plants named Som Rong growing around the temple, from which the temple got the name of this plant for hundreds of years. Currently, the pagoda only has 2 Som Rong trees that are growing very well.
When entering the temple, in front of the temple gate is decorated with many Khmer cultural symbols such as Naga snake, Krud god bird, traditional patterns ... covered with gold emulsion. Above the gate there are 5 towers, which are the symbol of Mount Meru (ie Mount Tu-di), where the five Buddhas in the future will become enlightened according to the Buddhist concept and also where the five gods often reside according to the doctrine. Brahminism.
From the main gate of the temple go about 100m to the temple yard. But a surprising thing is that on the way to the temple, there are many old trees about tens to hundreds of years old.
Som Rong Pagoda is also built in the same architectural style as other Southern Khmer temples with an area of 5ha including: main hall, sala, house for monks, and also a library with more than 1,500 books. serving local students, people and Buddhists. The architectural works inside the temple are harmoniously combined with each other.
The main hall is the main place to worship Buddha in the architectural works of the temple. The entire main hall is supported by 06 rows of pillars, with a rather special structure consisting of 03 overlapping roof systems at a certain distance. At each root of the roof is decorated with dragon images of Khmer people. The roof adjacent to the column is decorated with images of goddess Keynor and the god Krud, contributing to the solidity and strength of the columns supporting the massive roof, while contributing to the beauty and majesty. for the project. On either side of the entrance to the main hall is the image of a ferocious unicorn, standing guard at the door to prevent evil and protect the Buddha. On the walls and ceiling of the main hall are frescoes depicting the life of Shakyamuni Buddha.
The altar in the main hall houses many statues of Shakyamuni Buddha. In particular, two ancient Shakyamuni Buddha statues were made of trees in the year 1785 of the temple's founding. These two Buddha statues are in a standing position, with their arms extended straight ahead, their palms with red pointing forwards, meaning to remind people not to do evil deeds, so accumulate merit and virtue by doing good deeds. do good.
The temple grounds are divided into many different areas, the most prominent being the stupa placed right at the entrance to the temple and parallel to the main hall. The stupa has four directions and has four paths, representing love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Along the two sides of the path leading to the stupa are decorated with the image of the Naga snake god and the motifs of ancient Khmer patterns are carved very delicately and sharply.
The unique feature of the tower is the paint color, instead of the traditional yellow color, the tower is painted in gray color, both exuding a modern yet majestic and ancient look like monolithic architecture.
Especially in the temple premises, there is a majestic and gracious statue of Shakyamuni Buddha entering nirvana outdoors with a size of 63 meters long, 22.5 meters high, located about 28 meters above the ground.
Wat Pătum Wongsa Som Rong becomes more poetic in the late afternoon, coming here at this time visitors not only worship the temple, pray for peace but also can buy an impressive and unique photo album.
